A balk is when a pitcher aims directly at home plate getting ready to pitch and then proceeds to either throw the ball to another base or fail to throw the pitch directly to home.

    • @BachBeethovenBerg
      @BachBeethovenBerg Před 3 měsíci +1

@@mrdavid0814 Sorta. The spirit of the rule is that the pitcher can't deceive a baserunner by making them think they're going home and then picking them off. There's all sorts of technicalities written into the rules, but when pitching from the set, which is what pitchers are doing 99.99% of the time when runners are on base you have to come to a complete stop (or come set) before you throw.

Several comments on the first clip from Rays/Reds saying it's not a balk. Well it's 100% a balk. Thing is you need to have seen his 11 other pitches to get it. You probably notice the glove tap on his leg. That was part of every going to set from the other 11 pitches. He would do that and immediately bring glove and ball together in front of him. On this one he does the glove tap which is an indication to the umps that he started his going to set but drops the glove back down to his leg. That is a start and stop which is a textbook balk.

You can't just be up there and just doin' a balk like that.

1b. Okay well listen. A balk is when you balk the
    1c. Let me start over
1c-a. The pitcher is not allowed to do a motion to the, uh, batter, that prohibits the batter from doing, you know, just trying to hit the ball. You can't do that.
1c-b. Once the pitcher is in the stretch, he can't be over here and say to the runner, like, "I'm gonna get ya! I'm gonna tag you out! You better watch your butt!" and then just be like he didn't even do that.
1c-b(1). Like, if you're about to pitch and then don't pitch, you have to still pitch. You cannot not pitch. Does that make any sense?
1c-b(2). You gotta be, throwing motion of the ball, and then, until you just throw it.
1c-b(2)-a. Okay, well, you can have the ball up here, like this, but then there's the balk you gotta think about.
1c-b(2)-b. Fairuza Balk hasn't been in any movies in forever. I hope she wasn't typecast as that racist lady in American History X.
1c-b(2)-b(i). Oh wait, she was in The Waterboy too! That would be even worse.
1c-b(2)-b(ii). "get in mah bellah" -- Adam Water, "The Waterboy." Haha, classic...

I pitched from little league to highschool and at age 13 I played travel baseball for coaches that played pro or college. But each and everyone of these is a balk and I threw left-handed and the rules are that as a lefty your front foot can't crossover the rubber and throw to first base because it is a balk. But you also can't step towards home plate and throw to first because that is also a balk but you have a 45 degree angle to work with. So that means a left-handed pitcher can throw to first as long as he stays within that 45 degree angle from first base to the dugout. But that's what makes it difficult for runners to steal bases because you have pitchers out there who are very good and it makes it tough for runners to run on lefties. Because you are taught as base runners to read that pitcher whether it's a righty or lefty and what they are reading is. Do they have a high leg kick? Do they have a slide step when delivering to the plate in the stretch position? Do they have quick feet when throwing to first? So a lot of that plays in what runners can do on the bases because if pitchers are paying attention the runners and are mixing up their moves well they can be difficult to run on. But pitchers are not just trying to pick them off but just to shorten their lead at whatever base that they are at

One a pitcher motions towards the plate he is not allowed to change that motion, basically you cant fake a pitch (like a pump fake in football) thats the intended but in practice if a pitcher makes a slight deviation after motioning towards the plate he can get rung up. pitchers can step off the mound or be standing and step off but once they make a move towards the plate they are committed to throwing a pitch

Anyone else hate last year's MLB rule changes? It felt like their goal was to fit the same number of commercial breaks into a shorter broadcast. It wasn't about "fixing" the game. It was about fattening their bottom lines. The pitch clock combined with restricting the number of throws to 1st base has dramatically favored baserunners to the point that base-stealing statistics from 2023 forward cannot be compared with any numbers from the past. Any records set in 2023 and beyond need an asterisk.

The pitch clock and limited pick offs has sped up the game thankfully, baseball games arent meant to be +3 hours long of failed pick offs, ball scratching, and players adjusting their gloves every five seconds to slow the game down.

Batting records after the year of the pitcher need an asterisk. Asterisks are stupid to put on sports which change all the time from their inception
