    Better than one a dog could make!
    In this video I'll show you how to make a doggy door for your screen door or storm door. Never get up to let the dog out again. This dog door is built into the screen door and lets your favorite pet or child come and go as they please without bothering you all the time.
    NOTE: This isn't a great security solution as burglars would likely come right through the dog door. If you'd still like to build one for yourself, you can check out the links to the supplies below.
    Screen Door Material - amzn.to/2rGcCPY
    Clear Vinyl - amzn.to/2qax0GO
    Spline Tool - amzn.to/2qagZkc (it works okay...)

    This is fantastic. I am thinking of making one myself. BUT, here's an idea. Make the vinyl overlap the doggy entrance/frame, then use magnets where the frames meet the vinyl. That way they snap closed every time and the vinyl cover doesn't flail around when not in use.

    I did roughly the same thing but added magnets to the bottom as we have mosquitoes here and gives a nice snap closed

      @Saúl Hernández Toloza Most screen doors are made of a metal so test out some magnets to double check that they will work for your screen door frame. If not, make the plastic cut longer and get a small bar a couple inches shorter then your opening, roll the plastic around the bar, glue it, and it'll act as a weight to keep it closed when not in use.

    Awesome video. I watched this as my dogs keep running thru the screen "doggy door," that they made. Thanks.

    Too funny! I had been trying to decide the best way to make a lightweight, but sturdy dog door for the screen before it was too late. I didn't have enough time to think about it before my dogs made their own "dog door," just as your pup did! We put peanuts out on the deck for the squirrels and it was just too much for the dogs to watch, as the squirrels just sat there staring at them eating their peanuts knowing that the dogs couldn't get at them. I think I actually saw one of the squirrels stick his tongue out at poor "Winnie and Buster". Pups, 7 mo. old, just finally snapped and blew right through the screen one day! I think that your application is extremely efficient and appropriate for a lightweight screen door....(I was a construction inspector... You passed with flying colors! Lol) Thank you so much for sharing!

    Thanks for giving me a great idea! Instead of screen material I'm going to try to use plexiglass. It might solve the problems I'm facing of too much heat in summer and too much cold in the winter.

    This is awesome. I did a search to buy a cat door to add to our screen door, which has a quadrant on the bottom. All I need to do now is put the plastic that I already have on either side and cut the screen!

  • @gretchenwenzel2906
    @gretchenwenzel2906 Před 5 lety +2

    I forgot to add one thing. Magnets at the bottom of the vinyl/ screen flap along with magnets on the bottom of the frame of the door. You can get really lightweight magnets that will be just enough to stop the flap and seal it at the bottom so the flap will just stop right there as they come in or out. It's the same way they make them for regular dog doors. You can even find them at the dollar store, sometimes the fabric store certainly has them and I'm sure places like Home Depot and Lowe's, as well. It keeps the flies out!

    This is really great! Really, really. My breaker trips every time I have the AC on, and I need to find a solution to keep my pets safe before the Oklahoma heat really kicks in. Daytime highs can reach over 100° for weeks at a time and I have no doubt that my kiddos would cook if that happened while I was gone for the day. This solution is well within reach. Thank you for sharing!!

    You need a moving frame on the flap then it can close without allowing space for bugs to come in.

    I think you should try framing the flap too! The flap isnt completely covering the hole

  • @GatorShawn
    @GatorShawn Před 5 lety +1

    what about some very low power magnets at the bottom of the flap. you'd have to put some ferrous metal where they contact, but you might be able to just glue some steel washers to the door and then magnets on the plastic, or vice versa.

    Can you post the specs for the framing? Also I noticed the inside wood frame isn’t as long as the outer so it’s just glue holding the inner frame to the outer? Which glue? Finally what are the connectors used at the top of the frame where the screen and vinyl are hanging?

  • @robhettinger1861

    a couple of smaller fish weights that smash together at the bottom of the screen material will ensure the screen material hangs down.

  • @zoktoberfest
    @zoktoberfest Před 2 lety

    Nice job. My approach, although similar, involved a frame within a frame. The outer was fixed (glued and screwed), but the inner was hinged with magnets mounted to the bottom of the fixed frame, The swinging screen had a small diameter metal rod along the bottom edge for the magnets to grab and secure. Using the heavy duty pet screen, as did you, my cats can push through the magnetic clasps and the screen (door) returns tightly to its vertical orientation to keep insects out. I haver an additional opaque plexiglass panel that stays lock up and aways from the opening, but can be swung down and locked to keep the cats in and the critters out.

    use some small magnets at the bottom and attached them to both the door and well the door lol would snap back into place and easily free up for the dog. just like a real doggy door. 😁👍

      B Blair when I got my new house it came with a dog door.
      My dog is too big for it.
      I have 3 cats that love to try to get outside.
      So it has to stay locked all the time.
      With a shelf in front.
      When I get a puppy that would be good tho lol

    So let’s say I wanted to put this into a screen area not a door, a square area from a sunroom. If I just put the wood frame inside and out it should keep the rest of the screen in tact for me to cut out the doggy door opening?

    • @thebornmaker
      @thebornmaker  Před 6 lety +1

      Juran Johnson Lancaster If you frame around the cut the screen should stay tight for you. I think a sandwiching glue or construction adhesive helps keep it from coming lose over time.

      I have a piece of clear acrylic that I can add to the bottom to weigh things down a little more. Wanted our dog to get used to it before adding any extra weight. It's just about mosquito season in Texas so i'll prioritize adjustments accordingly.
