Do a no buy year, other than food and necessaties, you will come to realize how intentional your spending becomes. This gives you the time to focus on the project of decluttering. After doing just that for 1 and half yr. It has changed my thinking and outlook. I have not brought anything new in the home, saved money, i changed a bad habit, and was able to analize my actions. I have continued on my no buy year, i like it. I am in control now and dont fall for the consumer game. LIBERATING.
I started with a year of “no buying” makeup and face creams.(other than absolute essential). I used used only what I had and at the end of the year, threw out what was left and now only buy what I use and love. Saved a lot of money, less clutter and simplified my makeup and skincare routine. Next was a “no buy” clothes year. It became clear what to keep, what to get rid of and what I needed. I’m now very mindful of all purchases. I’ve done the same with household cleaning products. Use up what you have, stop buying more, save space and money!🙏🏼👍🏻
Started death cleaning habits when I was 19 years old, well before it had a catchy name. I am in my 50s now. This mentality has kept my load in life light.
Yes I've done it most of my life as well. I'm now 69. However, I've had a splurge over the last 5 years. But it's time for it to go now. I had fun. Thank you.
The first time I did decluttering was when my boyfriend and I moved into his grandmother's apartment seven years ago. For two weeks, I spent all day raking out garbage from every nook and cranny - hundreds of empty jars, hundreds of old Soviet books, dozens of towels and sheets that were older than me but that no one had even used. We had very few things of our own at the time, so after I cleaned out that garbage, we had a pretty empty apartment and I promised myself that I wouldn't accumulate so much stuff. But time passed, I got a job that I didn't like, had a lot of problems in my relationships, then the Covid started, and after the Covid, the war (I live in Ukraine)... Every year I earned more money and every year I didn't have enough. For the last 2 years, I had a debt on my credit card equivalent to 2-3 of my monthly salaries. During this time, I bought up to 300 books, hundreds of items of clothing, facial cosmetics, and a lot of hair cosmetics (in 2-3 months I bought up to 10-20 hair products that were too expensive for me). The vast majority of those things were just lying around, I had never used them or only 1-2 times in a few years. And about a year and a half ago, I started to gradually declutter again - I threw away and donated about 200-250 items of clothing and shoes, and donated more than a hundred books I had read. I also stopped buying new books. But during this period, I was actively buying hair products, and having already spent a considerable amount of money, I decided to stop buying any hair products altogether and use all the ones I already had. On August 1, 2023, I started a no-buy month, which I eventually turned into a no-buy year. During this time, I threw away and donated even more things, did not buy a single hair product, jewelry, lipstick, or piece of clothing. I only bought about 4 books. But in my rules for the no-buy year, I made a few notes about what I could afford to buy and in what quantity, in case I suddenly felt the urge to buy something. My apartment has become much cleaner during this time. I learned to let go of things - even new books that I won't read again, expensive clothes that I've never worn, cool lipstick that I don't use. I immediately give unnecessary gifts to someone else, I have no sentiments about them. And not only did I manage to pay off my credit card debt, but I also saved a significant amount of money. It's scary to think how much money I spent on things that I just threw away or gave away((( earnings for several years of my life.
I know it’s a good idea. Wonderful! Find your contentment in the Creator and not the created. Absolutely life changing. Liberating! Maybe call it Resurrection Cleaning🎉
Have just decided to cut out the selling part. On Vinted people basically want the clothes for nothing. I would rather donate to charity than keep things for months awaiting people paying a fair price. Great video btw 🥰
Oh, I know exactly what you mean! Selling is a real hassle. I have a rule that if it's worth less than $50, I just give it away. It's just not worth the stress.
Had my house pared down pretty well until recently, when my mother's house had to be cleared out to be sold. I gave away so much stuff of hers and kept only a few things of hers for myself. However, now I find that my house is not the way I wanted to keep it and I'm having a difficult time deciding what to let go next. Mom is still alive and asks about her stuff she cared about which I kept, but to be honest, I would have rather let it go, but I couldn't bring myself to do it - YET.
Guilt and obligation is a big reason why we hang on to stuff. I've found it takes a few passes (actually, continued passes!) to get down to the minimum. Think about what your children will want to keep. I find that helps with decisions of what to eliminate from the house.
Trust yourself; think about the joy of feeling FREE and...liberating the ones around you. Space is energy and life! go get those items to donate , to remove from your " feeling stuck " and...be happy! One IMPORTANT criteria people must realize: when you give, the other person may do whatever she/he wants with it! :) helene
I am decluttering my house to move to a flat. Been doing it for over 2 years. It makes me feel depressed, exhausted and I can’t see the end of it. I am doing it a lone and am 79. I find it really, really hard.
Do not feel ashame to go ask for help! A niece, a friend, a neighbour you trust! Bravo!! I am so proud " with you "!!! Do not give up! You will be so liberating... I am thinking of you! helene :)
I’ve been doing this for years. Really got going in earnest since Jan 2024. I identify the family mementos for my son & grandchildren. Just keeping a few precious things.
It can be really daunting! I started with just a general clean and declutter before I really got into looking critically at my possessions. I recommend starting in just one room and go from there. Good luck!
Having helped people professionally minimize, I recommend starting with a small room or space such as bathroom & do this one drawer & cabinet at a time. You will see & feel how good it feels living this way & that’s usually motivating to go to the next area of your home. Paper ie pictures, documents etc last. You can get hung up on reading & looking at those & the emotions that they bring up in you. I hope this helps you get started on your Swedish Death Cleaning journey:)

I LOVE this! It really makes you think about what you are buying right? It's amazing how quickly your mindset can change. Well done xx

Thanks Helene! It is something I feel strongly about.
Regret buying lots of stuff which are of no use. Wasted so much money. Too late.
Oh, I feel you! It's not too late though, from this moment forward it can be different. I do know what you mean about wasting so much money though. :(
Never too late....it gives us guidance for next shopping outings !!!
