  • My second video of the ACA Hurricane 130 as tested on 3/11/09. The audio's not as good in this one due to an inferior camera (Canon Powershot A590) I set up the nice camera (Canon Powershot S5IS) on a tripod and used the lesser one to get closer to the siren, hoping to hear more of the roots blower. It didn't really make much difference, but it was incredibly cool to see the Hurricane operating up close. I apologize for my crappy camera work. I cant hold the damned thing still to save my life.
    Siren starts at about 1:04
    As with my first video, I wish to thank Archon2561 for finding this siren and allowing me to record it with him.

    This actually sounds sort of like a 2T22 to me, the sound has that multi tone warble.

    Blower is happy and healthy sounding. I love the color of the siren. The only way to hear the blower is to get really close to it. But other than that it's quite impressive wish I could restore one of those myself and give it back to my community but it's looks complicated.

  • @RamFett
    @RamFett  Před 15 lety +4

    Nope, Archon found it, thank him. I was just as surprised as you that we had one in Milwaukee, let alone in decent shape and still in service.
    He got a video and I got this one as well as better quality one in stereo, but we wouldn't have any of them if it weren't for Archon.

  • @RamFett
    @RamFett  Před 15 lety +3

    Yep. The blower kicks in pretty fast, and this one is set correctly to keep the blower on a few seconds after the chopper cuts out so there's a proper wind down.

  • @RamFett
    @RamFett  Před 15 lety +2

    10/12 was used way back when ACA (B&N) bought rotor/stator assemblies from Federal. They were the same as those used on the 500AT and made their way into Mobile Directos and some early Allertors. The vast majority of ACA's are 9/12 (Allertors, Banshees, Screamers, Penetrators), 8/12 (Superbanshees, P-50's, a very few rare Allertors) and 8 port single tone (a small number of Allertors, Penetrators, RM-127, now used on all ASC Tempest series). This Hurricane is 8/10.

    @rhett443 This is the Pole Mounted blower, the earlier ones or the Square horned ones had bigger blowers that were the size of thunderbolt blowers.

    @murrfarms Před 15 lety +1

    Not even, that was yet another case of Federal's fudged ratings on their sirens. The maximum that those things ever put out was around 120-121dBC @ 100'. The biggest problem with them is that a lot of its sound potential is wasted by projecting past the disc and going straight to the ground. On the other hand, it does great for keeping ants from building their homes around a Thunderbeam's pole!

    Very interesting siren, that one's got an incredibly fast startup and fairly slow wind-down. Nice video!

  • @twotailedavenger
    @twotailedavenger Před 14 lety

    And that's one awesome wind up! That blower sounds weird when it fires up. Nothing at all like the Thunderbolt.

  • @RamFett
    @RamFett  Před 14 lety

    @form109 Not very little, it's still pretty loud...I'd say less sound gets projected above and below within a certain radius. It also depends on the type of rotational siren. Hurricanes have long, narrow projectors and use air forced by a roots blower, so they likely have a more narrow path than a Penetrator for example. Thunderbolts seem to be the same way.

  • @RamFett
    @RamFett  Před 14 lety

    @form109 I was well below the projector's path, so I really doubt what I was receiving was anywhere near the full 130 decibels. And rotating sirens are even less of an issue, because you're only getting blasted maybe 20% of the time. In April I recorded a P-50 with non-functioning rotator, which was pointing directly at me, It sounded a three minute alert test, twenty seconds into it I plugged my ears with my fingers and kept them there until the wind-down. That one was at least 130 db.

    I never liked the attack mode on these hurricane sirens, the best attack is a thunderbolt. My community used to have a SD-10 which also had a fairly nice attack mode.

  • @RamFett
    @RamFett  Před 15 lety

    Actually, no. I rarely wear ear protection for sirens. I think I was close and low enough to escape most of the harsh sound I would get if I were more level with the projector. I've been 3 times this distance from a P-50 testing and experienced ear pain. This wasn't so bad.

  • @form109
    @form109 Před 14 lety

    @RamFett so the Sound from the Siren is Projected mostly Out...and Very Little Above and Below the Projector?
