You asking the right questions which the media is not interested in asking because all they striving for is to keep EFF in bad publicity. South African media is white owned and very much against EFF. Their aim is to keep EFF in a negative publicity for as long as possible until people loses interest in the EFF. If you listen to this story, you would have picked up that Matodzi already mentioned it is loans, hence he approached EFF for donations and not the other way around.

For instance, Mr Mathodzi mentions the route of bank account of Brian Chivhambu but how Brian spent the money up a point where EFF benefited is a subject of thorough investigation. Even the investigative journalists mention Nandos, Gucci Stores, Liquor Stores and Restaurants etc. but those cannot be the target spending points to finish upward of R16milllion.

This puts most of the reporting we've had so far to shame !
What worries me and should concern all of us is the level of naivety displayed by the EFF leadership on this whole matter. So the EFF was up in arms about VBS's actions in relation to the Zuma matter then out of the blue they get a visit from the Chairman of VBS who essentially offers the EFF money.
Surely the first question they should have asked themselves was whether this was not a setup ! Surely they also would have known this was less about political party funding but more about shutting them up. We can't have this level of naivety at the highest levels of our politics.

Only when a gun is against your head do you offer such a large donation. If the donation was offered at election time without reference to the Zuma matter it is a different thing. It was offered whilst the VBS representative was trying to get the EFF to turn off the heat. It was a desperate act and it was a case of "We can keep quiet but what can you do for us?" That is a means of extortion. You are trying to defend the indefensible. Look in the mirror.

A political party can have multiple accounts. You are clearly a matriculant or 30% pass rate and are clueless. It’s not a crime to move money between various accounts. It’s a crime to launder stolen money. Go and prove that the money was stolen because CLEARLY a donation isn’t theft. And no one is entitled to determine that the donation came from stolen monies. It could have been from bank profits. Besides even if the monies were stolen by vbs execs, how would EFF have known that? There’s nothing suggesting that they would have known it was stolen, not even the affidavit

If the intention of Matodzi was to pay EFF leaders to quiet down on their criticism of the bank, would that make a difference in a court of law? Can one be complicit in corruption if they receive gratification in exchange for changing their rhetoric, or did the EFF give something else in return?
Hopefully people remember to hold the ANC and gov. institutions to account on this one. EFF is only one small part of this.

ALL corruption must be rooted out for the sake of our people and that of the generations to come - and not just technically illegal corruption but moral corruption also. We need people with honesty and integrity to be our leaders. People who would always do the right thing and not just because of the legality.
There are many people like that in this country. Hopefully we will have some of them as leaders once we clean house.

A truly excellent podcast rich with information, context and balance. Learned tonnes. I hope my summary below has done it justice.
The main messages - look at the big picture, get the facts, keep things in proportion, let the courts decide, let it unfold, don’t listen just to Daily Maverick 😂.
    My comments:
Seeing as Sizwe became very colour blind making some oblique special mentions about a crooked VBS kingpin and associations with wine farmers etc. let me say it straight. For anyone who thinks that white people are not knee deep in this corruption from time to time or even extensively think again. In every population there are the corrupt. They live among us whether we are in Constantia or Mamelodi, whether we are rich or poor.
The second unspoken point is why the EFF in particular has been a such lightening rod for derision in this saga, quite apart from the politics. The reason is scale, not of the money stolen, but the scale of the hypocrisy. The behaviour of some of the leaders (broader than VBS) and what they say they stand for are so at odds to be oblivious. To explain, if one is unashamedly a white monopoly capitalist well you can expect stealing from and stomping on the poor - that’s par for the course. But if you are communistic and strongly representative of the poor, black working class and live like a white monopoly capitalist - the dissonance is next level.

    SUMMARY
    OPENING
    Outed 2018
    Important investigative reporting
    What has been lost?
    BACKGROUND
Wide ranging sources look at them all to understand
    Complex, regulatory
Adv Terry Mdao - investigative report requires a lot of praise (SARS)
Report by Lex Mpadi PIC asset manager investor in VBS
    Subsequent report PIC
Further criminal proceedings plus investigative journalism
    TIMELINE
VBS is mutual bank handed from bantustan system
Basis then was occupation but not ownership
VBS defined a system of loans for occupiers early 1980s
2010s VBS limping along, Venda king comes into office, business people from Limpopo come in to take over the bank
First it’s a vehicle Matodzi (kingpin) + Venda
King comes in with their vehicle + PIC already had ownership + depositors (read van Rensburg “VBS a dream defrauded”)
Vehicle that took over VBS actually suspended Matodzi (acting weird) but Venda king convinced them not to
Consequence Matodzi took over and sidelined consortium
Eventually Vele Investments became the majority shareholder
Ordinary sh voted Matodzi in as chair over the wishes of the consortium
Matodzi corporate guy accounting KPMG EY UJ background surrounded himself with UJ black accountants {lots of hope sigh)
Matodzi created loan transaction from VBS to shareholders buy shares into VBS so Vele went from 4% to 1/2
Pity it was not spotted earlier by regulators (??)
    POLITICAL PARTIES INVOLVEMENT
    EFF Story
Money channeled to EFF to stop criticizing VBS about Zuma loan from VBS
Vele to Scamega 😂😂 to EFF leaders (restaurant, homes etc)
No legitimate business ends between Vele and Scamega
“Gratification” public power to misuse money
In the book he says it is sad and politicking but now gratification
[Does EFF really have a penthouse in Sandton?]
requirement to open VBS bank account (Scamega)
Why gratification? No EFF account opened all parties knew
EFF must answer why Scamega and what happened to the money - a bit unfair trial by media due to leak
Julius did hold press conference prior to latest but he needs to do it again (if he can’t reassure the public then consequences be that as it may)
Politicians accept money all the time - Helen Zille accepted money from Gupta for DA
It’s unfair to expect that they should have known the VBS looting (as opposed to just benefiting unknowingly)
Parliamentary enquiry - FS sanction him for disclosure
    ANC story
It seems clear that conspiracy with ANC to make regulars (SARB, Treasury) turn blind eye
Commissions to mayors to put money into VBS which is massive scale compared to EFF
Msize ANC is accused and on trial). Note both EFF and DA approached VBS for donations
SARB was very slow to catch on but became very proactive
DG of Treasury was accused of taking a bribe
    Auditors?
    ANALYSIS
Keep in proportion: Steinhof 100b, Gupta trillions maybe, VBS 2.2b
Conspiracies: 2015-2015 the Matodzi ascendency there were 4 concurrent conspiracies
1/ inside bank false transactions and reporting (fool, bribe)
2/ bank and Limpopo state and municipalities (pay off all politicians to get deposits (municipal not allowed to invest in mutual banks)
3/ state institutions outside Limpopo - reserve bank (did not go well, treasury (false compliance), auditors of state institutions and the bank (blind eye) (who?)
4/ Political parties in particular ANC but also EFF
Why has VBS got so much attention? Conspicuous consumptions, personalities Malema ?
This a story how corruption is writ large
    Affidavit crazy about many actors
Much bigger story than EFF (danger there)
Where else is this happening. Corporate power and greed?Matodzi has [white] wine farmers as buddies?
We will learn many more things in the legal proceedings
    Strategic leaking. Who?

The fact that the EFF took hush money speaks to their character. Taking money to stop talking about something in a Political space is dishonest and shame on the EFF for this. It’s not that it’s a political donation but if they can be bought then they need to get off their high horse. So basically the EFF can be bought.
Political donations are ok but when they influence your politics then there is something wrong. This is the biggest problem in US politics and we need to keep it out of SA at all costs.

It's a pity that our media has already taken a position that EFF is the main culprit and has somehow tended to minimise the roles played by the other organisations, political parties & regulatort authorities. I'm afraid this will also go the way of the George building collapse wherein we dont even know anything except what was aired on the days of the rescue.
We dont even know the names, genders, age or nationalities of the deceased. We dont know who has been charged and with what. Its just a dead silence.

I was intrigued by the stat provided in quantifying the amount of money, R2,2 billion which went from VBS. Particularly, as a comparison with 100 billion in Steihnhof and potentially trillions looted with the Gupta brothers and their state capture scheme. Why I was intrigued is that I found giving the amounts to be a moot point, and also a polarizing distraction as the comparison isn't sufficiently qualified. The impact of the systemic corrupting and crippling of state institutions is pervasive and constant. Which individuals, parties and private businesses are implicated and for what amounts speaks to larger issues of graft and parasitic opportunism. Consider the metaphor:" how do you eat and elephant? One bite at time." The result is the elephant is eaten and every bit counts, and in this case the looting of our country's institutions. R16M is a lot, but the cost to the clients of the bank and South Africa are astronomically large. Overall, however I am grateful and impressed with the objectivity and insightfulness of this piece. Thank you.
