I don't care if this is camp, don't care if its not entirely authentic (dance, veils, music etc)---its got Rita Hayworth and that is all that matters!!
If you want to see a version that's probably pretty close to authentic as far as the music, costume and dance itself, Zefirelli's depiction in Jesus of Nazareth from the 1970s is probably the best version. The actress looked the part, Arabic or Middle Eastern and was also uncomfortably young as Salome would have been.

Yes. It's tragic. ... but we still have the film-record of what a very very talented classy lady she was. ... she always felt her dance routines & work with Fred Astaire were the "high points" of her life & career. she was an amazingly stunning & beautiful woman.
Everybody loves Rita Hayworth, beautiful, marvellous as always. Just forget about the history and simply look at this splendid woman dancing beautifully....There is or was only one Rita Hayworth, for ever in our memories and our hearts....Thanks for posting this. An admirer from Switzerland.

Rita Hayworth. Grace Kelly. Vivien Leigh. The golden age of Hollywood belonged to them. They eclipse all of today's actresses in beauty, grace and talent.
I think it depends on your personal taste and what you want to get from watching something, but those old movies just don't elicit emotion in me. I want to feel pulled in, like I'm witnessing lives being lived. Old-time acting is often too dramatic (like Rita here: the scream and arm covering her face were just absurdly campy lol) which hides any talent they might have. Old-time actors *performed* the story as if still on the stage. But contemporary actors (at least good ones) *experience* the story as if it were actually happening and in turn make it so much more touching, scary, funny, terrifying, exciting, suspenseful, sexy, heartbreaking, revolting, romantic, awkward, infuriating, and everything else we can feel 🤩
No botox, no plastic surgery and she blows the doors off any actress these days. They all did....Natalie wood, Rita, Ingrid..the list goes on and on. Give me Rita Hayworth over Megan Fox any day of the week and twice on Sunday
she had plastic surgery to look white because she was hispanic and wanted to fit into white hollywood, lots of them had surgery they were just more lowkey in those times.
Rita Hayworth's studio actually published & actively advertised the amount of plastic surgery & extensive cosmetic treatments they had her do to make her look more like a "white American", including electrolysis to raise her hairline. Seriously, Google it. They made no secret of it even back then, so it'll be easy to find.

I think her roots are from Brooklyn, N.Y. Real acting. Real dancing. Basic choreography. The talent of the Actress. Thought the Kings eyes were going to pop out of his head. He was drooling. WW2 era, and Hollywood makes the World realize that there will be entertainment, even while there are atrocities taking place around the globe. Not too much has changed. Love the old ones.
@@femininefitness1Not sure what movie this is, but I'm going to take a wild guess and say John the Baptist. A woman who really hated him(because he denounced her marriage to Herod) had her daughter dance for Herod, and when he granted her a favor, she asked for John's head on a platter.

@B0RSALIN0 Hello Borsalino. Yes, I did. A long time ago in a theater, then on DVD. Your message reminds me that I should watch this picture again as soon as possible. Glenn Ford is a bit out of place but Rita, WOW!!! "Down to Earth" for instance is not a good film but watching Rita dance at the beginning in her green dress is an enchantment. She is bewitching as well in a so-so movie, "Affair in Trinidad", in two dance numbers. Fortunately we have DVDs to remind us how beautiful she was....
I have never seen this film, but from what I read about it the character of Salome is portrayed by Hayworth as being remorseful for her part in the death of John the Baptist. In reality I doubt the real Salome was remorseful although not much is said about her in the Bible after her captivating presense in the halls of King Herod.

@boboo36 , actually her hair was brown - she began dying it black when dancing professionally with her father to make her look "more Spanish" (and in her early films make-up was used to make her skin look darker), she let her hair go back to its natural color around the time she signed with Columbia, and then for "The Strawberry Blonde" (1941) her hair was dyed red for the first time. But I agree, electrolysis is a very long and agonizing painful process, she did go through a lot.
