Thank you, this worked perfectly on my E53 2001 X5. My battery in the car went flat and after I charged it the central locking no longer worked. I am baffled why 430 viewers would give this a thumbs down they must be idiots. I have 2 tips, firstly it is easier if you take the key off the keyring, and secondly if like me you have a spare key, you need to do the first one then without putting anything into the ignition, press and hold the buttons on the second key as on the first, whilst the system is still in programming mode otherwise the second/spare key won't work, so do them both one after the other. Thank you again form the UK.

Great post, thank you! I put this to the test on our 2004 530i. I went through the motions as you specified, but rather than the doors locking after the third push of the BMW/lock button signaling success, my driver's and front passenger side windows went down approximately 25%, both rear windows went down slightly and cabin/dome lights came on. I reinserted the key into the ignition and turned it to position #1. Once done, I locked the doors with the lock button. I then tried to unlock the doors by pressing the unlock button but got no response. I opened the driver side door and reclosed it. Then a small miracle happened, things that hadn't been working started working again. Driver side window control for all windows was previously only working the driver side window and mirror. All other windows required lowering or raising them at each individual window and the passenger side mirror did not move unless while backing up when it would tilt down to view the blind spot. After going through your process, I can once again control all windows from the drivers side control panel, tilt the passenger side mirror and unlock the trunk via the remote, but CANNOT consistently unlock the doors as I was hoping. I'll try the process again and provide an update if and when possible. Bottom line, GREAT INFORMATION. Thanks for the post.

OMG IT WORKED!!! My brother had this E39 for a full year without the remotes working because he didn’t know this!!!! I’ve had this for a month and i’m so happy i found this!!!!
On google i first found a place that said you have to turn the key to position 5 times really quickly and that sounded odd to me so i needed to see a video explaining this to believe it and it’s nice that just once was enough. Doing it 5 times sounded like a prank to make the alarm go off for 5 minutes not being able to stop it :)

This trick helped. This should be tried first before looking in any possible problems in antenna diversity, the battery of the key itself (which charges from the car itself, so should not be a problem ever). Just turning the key, and pressing buttons solved my problem, thanks for sharing.

    Wtf man?!?
I work at a popular auto parts store, and I change key fob batteries all the time, and with no problems either.
Even mercs are simple to change.
However, I just recently bought a 07 BMW X3 3.0si, and stupidly...Without researching it...I tried to change my battery the same way.
Little did I know that this particular key takes its own type of battery called a “HQRP battery”.
Once I disconnected the battery, and then reconnected it after realizing that it’s a 2025 Duracell battery, that’s soldered to the +/-...It lost all function to unlock and lock the vehicle.
    However...This video saved me.
    It absolutely worked man!
Thank you so much for this video, because you have saved us all a lot of money for a new key fob.
    Awesome video!

    Programming Additional BMW Key Fobs
So if you have a working key fob, but wish to program additional keys, follow these steps:
Take the working key fob along with the ones you want to program inside the car with all doors and windows closed.
Put the working key into the ignition and turn to position 1. At this point, the dash lights and accessories should turn on.
Turn the key back and remove.
On the working key, hold down the unlock button and press the lock button (the BMW logo) 3 times, then release the unlock button. The doors will then automatically lock and unlock.
Take the new key and hold down the unlock button while pressing the BMW logo 3 times, then release the unlock button. Again the doors should lock and unlock, and you’re done.
Programming a New Key from Scratch
These instructions are for programming a new key when you do not have a working key fob.
Insert the key into the ignition and turn it to position 1 and back rapidly 5 times.
    Remove the key
Hold the unlock button and press the BMW logo 3 times, then release the unlock button.
If you have additional keys you’d like to program at this time, repeat step 3 within 30 seconds from the original key programming.
Turn on the ignition to complete the process.

I tried and i hear little like click on the left side of the steering wheel, or somewhere left, i cant tell for sure, help please.. I have two keys, both lock and unlock car with old fashion method, and both keys are normally starting the car every day.. is there a possibility that fuse is dead? I would really appreciate if you can help me out with this :)

Hats off to this guy. Simple instructions that work! I lost my main key and had to dig out the old backup one. I had stopped using it because it didn't operate remotely anymore but my first time attempt with this sequence made the doors lock and unlock and voila, remote is working again! I thought I was going to have to change the battery but now I'm relieved I don't have to cut it open. 👍👍

Thanks again for the super useful tips and tricks! I replaced the battery on my E46 spare key but the remote didn't work to remote open, only with key and in the ignition. I thought I'd done something wrong and broken it, but I followed these steps and now have a fully working spare key! Awesome.

Thank you sooo much for ur video. I’ve had this problem with both my BMW 3 series convertible keys. The fob just stopped working one day and I couldn’t lock or unlock the car by pressing the fob buttons. Just happened to come across ur video and I went through the steps you outlined and now my key fobs are working perfectly fine. The doors are locking and unlocking 👍🏼 yay 😁
