What a gorgeous lady. Madeline Kahn was not afraid to play comic foils (in the Mel Brooks movies and in "What's Up, Doc") but she actually had a very elegant and intelligent presence. So obvious here. I love learning that she was a modest introvert.

She graduated from Hofstra in speech therapy, was going to be a teacher. But whenever she was onstage audiences responded & her life took another path, fortunately for us all! Her On the 20th Century co-star John Cullum said she was an orchid who was treated by that show's creators like a dandelion, she ended up leaving the show early. It took her years to get her confidence back & find the right vehicle to return to Broadway, when she finally did, she won the Tony. Madeline seemed to do best doing star turns in ensembles, she was repeatedly hired by Brooks, Bogdanovich, the producers of her show with Cosby, she was twice nominated for supporting Oscars in her 1st films! Yet talents as legendary as Hal Prince couldn't find a way to make her comfortable as a star, couldn't treat her like one in a star vehicle, so they lost her (apparently she had to do her multiple costume changes off-stage exposed to the crew, she apparently also had #metoo moments with Ed Asner & Alan Alda in other productions). Robert Klein, Lily Tomlin, Jane Alexander, Kevin Kline all said how great she was to work with, Kline credited her with allowing him to open up his nothing as written supporting role with a lot of physical business, a diva could have shut that down or refused to leave a troubled production. Not Madeline. Lucille Ball had her fired from Mame, while Streisand let her fly in her debut in What's Up, Doc? Glad she finally landed safely with Cosby - how often does that get typed?!

And Kahn was working her way into the character and Ball couldn’t wait, so they fired her. At least she wasn’t associated with MAIMED starring Lucille Ball who couldn’t sing, dance, interpret lyrics or deliver line readings. And she was blurry to watch. I squinted so much my eyes were sore. And all because she paid $2 mil of the $14 mil production cost. What a waste and missed opportunity of s property and not to use Madeline Kahn.

I became a fan of George Lucas because of his Rose interview, Charlie was trying to build something up (Kennedy Center Honors?) & Lucas would have none of it - "We give each other awards all the time." I think Rose's arrogance was part of his downfall, he thought he was beyond criticism or consequences. Ironic that Madeline could work with both Rose & Cosby but thought that her 1st interview with Mel Brooks was casting couch - because she was lampooning Dietrich, he asked to see her legs, she thought it was a come on. So Mel had to tell her about his happy marriage, & ended up inviting her to dinner with his wife Anne Bancroft repeatedly & the three became friends, Mel wisely repeatedly worked with MK.
