It’s nice to see how good Korone English is, she doesn’t speak English that often even but she really could with her skill, her English skill is even higher then Miko’s Japanese skill
I mean she has a pretty unique and hard to comprehend accent sometimes even for Japanese people so I feel like her English skill is often kind of understated due to her heavy accent also. I find the same thing with Subaru, her English is super good but she can just be hard to understand due to her accent.
Well, I guess a lot of JP members have been studying English, like Korone, Marine, Suisei, Towa, etc. They might not be able to speak it, but I guess they understand it very well. Comprehension and speaking are two different skills unfortunately

It's always easier to understand foreign language than to speak it. My japanese is very similar to Korone's english - I can understand quite a bit, but speak it... oh dear.
I love that when Kiara asked how to say Dorayaki in English, Korone's response was saying Dorayaki while imitating an english accent.

@@VaissdestrucAt least in the sense of saying it in an "English" accent, but the specific way she said it was slightly off. There's two ways you could say it actually: say it close to Japanese but with "English" phonemes/sounds such that the stress is placed where it'd have a high pitch-accent in Japanese, *or* say it with the natural stress-pattern of English (that is, in the same way as Calliope or Penelope).
How to say Hamburger in japan...."Hambaga"...its mind blow....lolololol....

You can tell early on in the clip that Kiara's just really fascinated by how Korone chooses to phrase her translations since even the pauses sound natural.
This is even more impressive when you consider how different sentence structure is between English and Japanese. But Korone made it work anyway because she's amazing like that.
It's pretty much what you'd expect a pro translator to be doing, and it's seriously impressive.

Korone's a bit like Subaru I think, where decent English comprehension is worlds away from competently and confidently being able to speak it.

@@rade-blunner7824 Well, if you learn English as a second/third/more language, it's really easy to get to understand and read it well without being able to speak it.
It's often easier to find movies and tv series to watch (learning how to understand spoken English) than it is to find someone with whom to practice speaking it.
And we know Korone loves old American movies.
@@rade-blunner7824 Korone did say that they talked about everything in this video earlier so I imagine that helps a lot. I think Subaru's still 3rd behind Lui and Haachama though. If you watched her personally translate the Henry Stickmin series before the JP version was available you'd know why
@@villahermosasebastian8794 Even long before the Henry Stickmin arc I remember there was a stream where Subaru was translating whole paragraphs of English text on the fly for her viewers and it blew their minds. I forget what game she was playing.
I feel Korone could pull a Tenma and learn english entirely by watching Die Hard over and over (in english with english subtitles). Her comprehension seems very solid already.
How do you think she got this good? She hasn't studied English post schooling like Sora. She just learned from watching movies over and over. Her sub account twitter is proof of that

@@venkaramon iirc, she started taking proper classes mid-2020, a few months before that famous English-only Super Mario stream. She was already moderately good before that though due to her being something of a westaboo, but nothing crazy.

her comprehension skill seems to be really up there. Whats more amazing is how attentive she was to remember what Kiara has said and being able to keep retention of what was said in the order it was said.
That's just Korone. She remembers everything. Okayu said Korone is her sd card memory because Okayu is forgetful and Korone reminds her of everything. Korone also remembers to the point of what her fellow talents call her as a nickname and will call out ANYONE who suddenly changes what they call her

Not to mention remembering HOW Kiara said it. You could tell Kiara was testing her limits at the end and Korone translated it perfectly.

Very impressive Eigo from Korone, though my biggest takeaway from this is that Korone does 9+ hour streams while sitting without a back support? Every time I think she can't impress me more, she somehow does it lol
She also streams with speakers instead of headphones. Which makes sense. Headphones would be painful
My theory is since she is a boxer she must have a strong/trained core and less back pain.

Most younger people in Europe are trilingual I believe. We usually learn our own language, then English and either German, French or Spanish with some schools having broader options. I'm surprised Kiara never learned a third language in school, or maybe she did and I missed it.

@@lunarath1 I had French as a third language but I wouldn't call myself trilingual. In my experience the third language only rarely makes it to conversional level.
Also Latin is a common offer for a third language and you ain't gonna speak that anywhere.

@Platonix beat me to it, but yeah, she studied at the University of Tokyo, which is one of the top schools in the world. Extremely difficult admissions, somewhat similar to Harvard in the USA or Oxford in the UK

I knew that Koro-san has been getting really good at English but DAMN my jaw was on the floor during this part.
Korone is like one of those characters in fiction that is super overpowered but just wants to have fun so they don't get involved in whatever the conflict of the narrative is. I always think of Subaru as kind of the protagonist of Holo but Korone would be that mid-season character that shows up and can do everything but they just want to live happily baking their bread by the sea or whatever.

This was a really adorable collab, I really want to see Korone do more one on one collabs with EN
Korone might have the best EN comprehension among the JP girls right now. Several are really good if you speak slowly, but for that HUGE paragraph about Korone’s bench, Kiara talked at a pretty normal pace for native/fluent speakers talking to other native/fluent speakers, and Korone understood and remembered almost the entire thing. Even though I think some like Subaru and maybe Lui and Chloe could UNDERSTAND it, I think Kiara would’ve had to slow down. Or they certainly wouldn’t have got nearly the entire thing.

Lui would have no problem, Chloe would need her to slow down, and Subaru would be okay but might miss a word or two.
Why are Kiwawa and Korone so damn cute?
I work as a professional interpreter/translator who supervises a bunch of volunteers and I would do some very unspeakable things to get more volunteers with Korone’s ability to adopt her source’s tone and mannerisms. Often it’s a lot easier to teach someone how to rephrase the source language in another language than keeping the entire intent of their speaker

Understanding language, typing and speaking it are very different beasts. I learned English on my own, i watched movies, anime (sub) etc in English with no issue whatsoever, but when i moved to UK for a while and tried to speak English i was a mess. Tho it did get a lot better relatively quickly but still, my speaking skills were far below my undertanding.
After certain point the only way to improve your foreign language is to speak and interact with natives. CEFR has A1-C2 skill set, however B2 is more than enough and learning from textbooks, etc becomes practically useless.
In your defence, some parts of the UK have people speak in such a way that they sound like they're speaking a different language entirely, even though they actually are speaking English.
@@dreamcore7 Absolutely. I learned more english after being done with school that what we got in the lessons. More of a natural speech, lots of stuff that isn't really taught in school, and the confidence to actually use it.
I'm in the same situation, i understand everything, i can even answer anyone if i write it down, but when it comes to actually communicating with someone in real time, yeah my brain just shuts down instantly :D

I knew Korone understood some English but dang! Of course speaking it is definitely different but I think she has a good enough grasp that if she started to talk to and collab with EN she could be fluent pretty quickly.
It's amazing how well Korone has come along, she used to stumble during her english streams but now I think she has a better understanding then I do with Engrish being my first language. Bread Dog is filled with determination!

It's kind of crazy to think how much better Korone has gotten at English just in the limited time that I've been watching Hololive. Some of the first Hololive clips I remember seeing were of her trying to speak English and they were adorable but there's NO WAY that THAT Korone could so effortlessly translate from English into Japanese what Kiara is saying. I'm also starting to notice that her English pronunciation continues to improve and she's sounding more and more like Lui in that regard.

As a linguist with multiple years passively learning Japanese, this is absolutely incredible. Korone's translations are effectively professional, and she does them basically instantaneously. She could easily be a real time translator for EN>JP exchanges.

Korone's English comprehension is astounding. I was amazed when I was watching the stream. We've all heard her speak some English, and she's done some English only streams even, but I had no idea that she was at this level.
I really love the way these two are so comparable to each other. It's like they were split at birth and finally managed to meet for the first time and had an insane chemistry and were so very alike. Almost twins even! I would love to see more future streams with Kiara and Korone.
