Anyone familiar with the Fokker F27 Friendship (which has been in service in New Zealand for over 40 years) will immediately recognise the high-pitched whine of the two Rolls Royce Dart engines, as you'll hear on this video. The is one of two F27-500s still in service with Airwork Ltd in New Zealand (as at September 2013).
The aircraft is show taxiing and then taking off at Blenheim Airport in the province of Marlborough, New Zealand.

Imagine a country airport. Possibly the only flight of the day. The flies are busy. The Fokker brings the world to a distant small community and has the stage to itself as it taxis to the terminal. What a performance. In no time it is turned around and off again to the next town on its milk run.

spent three years on relief staff for a large bank and flew into a lot of small country airports in the Fokker over those years. Remember one landing at Innisfail with a large cyclone off the coast. It was a real bumpy ride all the way but ended in an excellent landing.

Magnificent bit of aviation machinery.Just to add, while I personally can't remember F27s, they were a large part of my parents life, living in a remote town in the middle of nowhere. Took all day, from sunrise to sunset, stopping everywhere, to cover around 1800 plus miles, delivering mail, freight, medical supplies, and passengers.

I used to fly in a lot of F27’s of Ansett Airlines and Trans Australia Airlines or TAA back all thru the 1970’s from Melbourne Airport to Wynyard on the North coast of Tasmania and return to visit family quite often and remember I could get a flight to Tassie on football grand final day for as little as $25.00 one way as the Airlines tried to get a few bums in seats as they had to get there to pick up the crowds to come back to Melbourne, I also remember a few memorable flights in bad weather from giving up the east west landing during final approach at Wynyard as the turbulence was that bad and a lot of people were screaming and coming in from the other side for a west east approach which was much better yo orbiting at Wonthaggi while on the way back to Melbourne over Bass strait as they closed Melbourne airport for a brief period due to the bad weather, but I can never forget what a fabulous little airliner the Fokker was, and that unforgettable sound of the fantastic Dart Turbo prop!

Lovely! Thanks for posting this. Used to see these bring my brother home and fly him away again to the Navy from Walla Walla, WA in the late 60's. West Coast Airlines then...that propeller whistle is sooooo familiar, as was the slapping sound of the props being feathered after parking at the gate. Flew these a number of times, including my first ever airplane trip from Seattle to Walla Walla. It was dressed up in Bonanza livery---just before Bonanza, Pacific and West Coast were gobbled up by Hughes Airwest. Wonderful big windows, big seats and no wing to obscure your view from any seats, and an almost soothing droning in the cabin. Which would have gotten old on a long flight. :)
This one looks like it is taking off from an inland northwest regional airport...maybe Wenatchee or Yakima?

The Roll's Royce Dart engines seem to produce more jet noise than the Pratt & Whitney turboprop engines of the DeHaviland Dash-8. That makes the darts sound more like regular fan jet engines than the Pratts.
