- Fair Go has had a number of complaints from customers of NZ Modular Homes. They say its director Warren Sinclair has failed to deliver the homes they paid for, and they're out of pocket for big money. Gill headed to Whangārei to track him down.

The intro says tiny homes have created the problem. It isn't the tiny home, it is a dishonest businessman looking to make a quick buck.

We see these scammers all the time and they gt no punishment. They should get 20 years hard time in prison. This might deter others from these dirty tricks and outright robbery.

Unfortunately, it’s an expensive cost to recover what hasn’t been delivered to you, and to recoup your money. If only it was easy to request an asset seizure. Take his land & have it sold off…

people like this man need to be striped of his home and bank accounts to pay for the homes of these venerable people. It happens far too much.
Absolutely, you know he's hiding that money too, needs to be made to pay and if he can't in jail till he can (which ironically will be permanent). These guys get away with stealing money bank robbers only dream about.
Why do these people not have legal contracts?
Govt needs to start a register of reputable tiny home modular builds, builders and a list of those who are not.
The common thread here of course is all of these people paid the full build amount upfront. If a builder doesn't have the cash or product on site to build your home with a deposit only with the rest due on delivery, that's a red flag they aren't a reputable business.
These are likewise all tiny homes costing dramatically under the market rate. That's another red flag.
Scammers shouldn't be scamming, it goes without saying. But they're crooks, so they aren't going to just stop. So people need to take some responsibility for themselves and realise they live in a world filled with people trying to take them for a ride. As these victims are unfortunately finding out the hard way you're responsible for making sure you don't get defrauded. So be vigilant. Don't use businesses advertising on Facebook market place or other such unmoderated classifieds. Check the history of a company you're going to spend any significant amount of money with before you agree to do business with them. Don't pay anymore than the minimum deposit up front. If you fail to do your due diligence, don't be surprised when it turns out you've been scammed.

I went through a 300k reno 1 year ago and I had to pay $0.00 upfront. The reno was done in stages and i was paying at the end of each stage. This is how it should work. They other way is for the money to go to a trust. People need to do their due diligence.
It's normal to pay for things up front ...the problem is the dodgy builder

Any delinquent director should be banned. If regulators allow them to restart a new company, then they are also to blame. Phoenixing behaviour needs to stop. They know that the court system, time and money protects them. And then the system seems shocked when victims seek justice by other means.

We need some sort of trust account type system to hang on to these deposits and give progress payments to the builder.
I want to start out as a tiny home builder but how can people trust they aren't going to lose money with me when I haven't got any reviews or history? This clown ruins it for many.

Never understood how fully grown adults can literally dump every cent theyve got into something that they dont understand or cant be delivered on at time of payment. Its life lessons that should've been learnt long before your 40s/50s.
Oh man sad one that guy should be arrested heres what I did bought a 3x3m shed from mitre 10 aquired some free timber 2 aluminum Windows, basically built a sled,(movable) with a gable roof shed with camp/oven stove,(heating/cooking),did all the work myself,(easy) by simply watching a builder & CZcams,all up took 1 week & cost $900 can accommodate 1 person comfortably

You should report to the police in order to catch this guy. I felt frustrated too. I'm really felt sorry for those customer has been fraud or scammed. The government must help these customer at least some how. Every problem there's solution. Must ask help the community together to help these custoner lost money and house to build.
Attach his property against the losses
Always protect yourself when making payments for 'óff-site' material and or services by using a proper construction contract (as required under the Construction Contract Act) with schedule provision of procedures for identification, registration and security over all materials and off-site services on a monthly progress basis. Do not pay a cent in advance. Only pay on receipt of registration (properly identified named & located) for, and access to those goods and services. It's all there in the Act for those who care to read it.
As for me, I rather to ask help for community who are knowledge of the of, but Tyre puncher, home maintenance, fencing, etc.. Everybody must contribute what they can provide in order to help them. By team ordinates and support, every problem will solve step by step... It will make a bigger good positive impact to all of us because of... Love our neighbor. 🙏

It's basically robbery. But I'm guessing he'll just go into liquidation, pay off creditors with whatever money hasn't already been syphoned off to himself (and his dad) and nothing more can be done.

i dont trust builders,i have seen many close a bussiness and then start up another and carry on doing the same.i now just fish and have lived on the benifit for 30 years,beats turning up on their door steps and night and worry about it,Funny thing is i have a home paid off and money,welcome to the jungle
