  • This is a old scythe given to me by a friend and asked to restore it. I used the skills I learned to restore this old scythe and give it a nice polished look. I hope you enjoy the video and thanks for watching!

Nice job. Excellent nibs/ handles. How’d you get the metal black?

rustoleum changes the color of steel and changes it to a dark grey. thats why we never use it in actual restorations.

Yes this is my first time using acid based removal. I do like the finish and i think it looks better on this stain. Although on most of my restorations after this I have only used wire brushes and sand paper to keep the original color. I wasn't worried about it being 100% original due to it having a modern nut replacement.

@@DrewDubious As you said I used an acid called krud cutter from rustoleum. I believe it's phosphoric acid. It does a good job on other things I used it on. It's not weak, like using coke or vinegar, but not overly strong, like muriatic acid. It did change the color. Aesticially, I like the color, but as you said, it isn't a restoration in the sense of keeping it's older look. I started using less acid based rust removal after this project and used sanding and wire brushes. I now only use acid if the color would benefit the appeal more than I value the aged look.

Like did you use gun blue or anything?

If you mean blueing, I did not. No excess heat was put into the metal. I did not want to remove any hardening done to it, and at the time, I wasn't experienced in blueing. The color was from an acid I used. One of the first times I used acid. I rarely use acid now to keep the original color of the metal. I only use it restoration projects that would make it look better. My goal is to restore the tools and get them back out into circulation instead of a scrap pile.
