My grandmother's family comes from that eastern area of Poland. East to the UNESCO-listed Renaissance "ideal town" of Zamość. I've been visiting family graves at a cemetery not that far away from there every year for All Saints Day with my parents. I am currently visiting my parents in my hometown 160 km west to the village where the missiles hit and killed 2 Polish farmers. I'm 28 and I've lived all my life in peace and prosperity. The only stories about war and bombings I would hear from my great-grandmother who lived through World War 2. This part of Europe has been peaceful for over 80 years. I can't believe that 160 km from my hometown, within the borders of my country, people have been killed by rockets used in a war. It feels unreal. I've dissociated so heavily that I can't even feel any emotions. I don't want to even try to imagine what might happen next.

Here’s my question… are there any legitimate targets near the Poland border, INSIDE Ukraine, that could remotely explain why Russia would fire rockets in that vicinity in the first place? If not, this indicates either a very provocative intention, or an absolutely unimaginable degree of carelessness for a nation with a supposedly modern military.
Nah, russia is also firing a civilian(non-legitimate) targets...so this question is moot
There is no legitimate target in Ukraine. Whole war is illegal. Well, for Russians, legitimate targets are everywhere.

The coordinates of the farm is 50°28'28"N 23055'39"E. Using Google Maps, i did a rough measurement around the groups of buildings in the immediate area, and it totaled roughly 0.3km /0.12 mi - surrounded by 23.5 km/14.6mi open fields. If half this area belong to the "groups of houses/buildings" beyond the fields, you are left with 0.3km of buildings in a 11.75km area. If you randomly strike this area blindfolded, you have about ~2.5% (1/40) chance to hit a building... If 2 such rockets hit, then it kinda goes without saying that they were aimed at this area. Could of course have been "human error", but i can not see how this could have been 2 "rogue" rockets that crashed in a random area...
Radar and other satellite reconnaissance, AWACS in the area can be combined to confirm where these 2 missiles came from.
NATO needs to supply some very SERIOUS anti-aircraft missile systems and radar systems to Ukraine RIGHT NOW.
They probably already have, but want to square it away diplomatically before releasing info to the news agencies. Nato needs time to figure out how not to make this spark a nato russia direct conflict.
Poland already confirmed it was russia missiles.
I guess the best thing what can happen would be if Nato closes the airspace around Poland for like xx kilometers (which would include ukraine airspace)
Then again a russian respond would follow.. which would probably not very special, since they are way weaker than NATO.

These missiles are high accuracy warheads. They took out all power from lviv. Hitting this small polish village was a very calculated move. Everyone was taking about the kherson retreat, Russia just let us know - the war is far from being done.
The ultimate catch-22 situation. NATO failing to respond will look weak, vulnerable and gutless. NATO responding threatens further escalation that could be catastrophic. Personally, I think that we (NATO) must respond since President's Biden statement of "we will defend every inch of NATO territory".

How?bro!!this is not the 1918 or 1945!!if the collective West attacks Russia with weapons directly there will be a retaliation!!mostly nuclear retaliation!!Is Nato willing to let over a billion people to die because of 2 people dead in Poland??
And should they be punished if it was a Ukrainian anti-aircraft S-300 rocket?
If it was accidental, odds are it would have landed in a field somewhere, odds of it landing actually in a town/village is low, like throwing darts at a map.
Low, but not zero. However, I suspect it will be a short investigation due to the amount of eyes in the sky aimed at Ukraine.
Men of culture know full well that the last few minutes of the video were the most important.
I hope Poland responds strongly. Missile launches are NOT accidental and Russia is responsible for everyone killed by their missiles.
Not just Poland, NATO!
NATO has to respond if it will ever be taken seriously in the future, if not, NATO is useless.
yeah and maybe trigger a nuclear war and wipe all of us. Can't wait for it to happen!!!
With Russia's lack of precision weaponry, I'm somewhat surprised this hasn't happened before now...
"Lack of precision" 100+km??? Do you know very strange thing: NATO didn't notice any rocket coming to Poland on AWACS plane while they have constant monitoring and can see all missiles in that area. If they only can blame Russia for anything they do it. But as we know Pentagon made statement about lack of proofs against Russia in this case. Wait for investigation until you write bs.
Putin will use that as an excuse : " it's the fault of the US since I can't get precision guiding chips"
Kind of hysterical reporting, frankly. If it was a Russian weapon they'll still need to determine if it was intentional, which won't be too easy. I think they'll almost certainly have to assume it was an accident.
It was two cruise missiles, very accurate multi million dollar missiles. And not an accident for two hits on farm buildings, in the middle of nowhere.

For Art. 5 to trigger, the incident would have to constitute an "armed attack." Does an accidental incident satisfy? Even if it does, Art 5 does not require armed force, but action as deemed necessary to restore and maintain security. The Article leaves plenty of room to maneuver. However, politically, there will be pressure by some for armed force.
The issue with just ignoring it because Russia might claim it’s an accident is that not doing ANYTHING means Russia can just continue to "accidentally" bomb NATO.
@@FlorianWendelborn Perhaps we have resources to determine whether it is accidental regardless of what Russia claims. The missile was a anti air missile fired by Ukraine, it was not from Russian side. That is what the US is claiming so it is obviuously a accident?
Poland...get ready & take care!
They will want to review all the AWAC and satellite tracking of projectiles in that area. to verify its launch source and trajectory for any posable mid-air collisions / trajectory changes that would cause the projectile/s to go into Poland. and then the crash site forensics to verify it manufacture origin and type.
I agree. More facts are needed because as far as we know, those rockets could have come from anywhere. This will still cause a NATO response even if its only a mild one for enhanced anti missile defence and detection in key areas.
During the last interview the DW host and the speaker began discussing whether the G20 countries would accept territorial concessions for Russia to keep part of Ukrainian territory. Oops, missiles are Ukraine's.
You CAN Not rule out the fact that Ukraine could have fired the Russian missiles at Poland....
Poor Poland, always gets attacked.
Whether this was by accident, and it was not meant to have landed in Poland, as it was deflected by Ukraine’s air defence, or it was a deliberate attack on Ukrainian infrastructure that was to close to the border and it ended up going over the border,
It is still Russia’s responsibility to not let this happen in the first place,
Based on the fact that non of the Russian missiles are actually hitting their so-called military targets in Ukraine,
Russia shouldn’t be targeting any infrastructure near the Ukrainian & Polish border, to guarantee that this does not happen, being fully aware of the consequences of what could happen if it does by NATO,
Now if it was a missile that was intercepted by Ukraine’s air defences, and remnants of either Russia’s or Ukraine’s missile has strayed over the border,
NATO could say, ok we are fully aware that this is what happen and we knew it could happen, by mistake, as to not let it happen again, but if this happens a second time, then we will take it as a deliberate attack on a NATO country,
Or they could say that we need to take more measures to protect Poland’s borders by giving Russia an ultimatum,
Not target any of Ukraine’s infrastructure within, as for example, an 80 kilometres/50 miles distance of the Polish and Ukrainian border,
Any missiles that are found to be aimed at targets within this area, will be classed as a threat towards Poland,

Russia is trying to take land from a neighbor. They are now sending basicly civilians with guns to the front line. Over 1000 soldiers a day die because of this. Every day. And it is getting worse. So, since their infantry is basically cannon fodder and fertilizer they shoot missiles at civilian targets and infrastructure. By definition this is a war crime. They either aimed really bad or a missile got shot up and flew off course. Doesn't matter, there should not be missiles flying. That is what happened and it is time for a response.
