I am a DES baby. My mother took DES for seven months while she was pregnant with me. I have tried to access my records but never could. Today, research and studies are proving that this drug caused so much more than cancer. This clip was before its time.
The University of Iowa began promoting the use of DES to fatten livestock early on! This synthetic estrogen effected far more than just the mothers and daughters. It also had horrible effects on the son's. My older brother got breast cancer in his mid twenties and died from it at 47. I never identified with being male. It effected the people producing it and feeding it to the livestock. Some men handling it were growing breast. They stopped feeding it to chickens because of causing male breast growth from consuming. They kept feeding it to cattle until 1979!
Throughout 1971, researchers published more studies that linked DES to the development of irregularities in the glands of the daughters of DES users, and, in November of 1971, the FDA banned the use of DES during pregnancy in the US.
I remember watching this episode years ago. And I am a DES daughter. A lucky DES daughter. I remember sympathizing with Billie and her mother. My folks had been married for nearly five years. Mom had to spend the last couple of months with her feet up and there were years between me and my sisters. I know the daughter's anger but I can sympathize with her mother. My mother. The mothers who wanted their babies to make it and trusted their doctors.
nicely said. Thinking of the thalidomide babies....born in late 50s/early sixties, including now retired bass/baritone, Thomas Quastoff. Glad that shows like LOU GRANT were able to "advertise" the DES issue...30+ years ago.
It is incredible that in a fiction they could openly talk about the Armenian genocide. That tragedy has not been fully acknowledged yet by many governments, Turkey's included of course.
This was very moving. I know someone whose mother did take this medicine, actually. Thank you for sharing this series! I've enjoyed every one. If you have the rest, please share them, I'd be so happy to see them!
My cousin took medicine with her daughter to reduce nausea, she was having horrible nausea this was in 1972, her daughter grew up and had lots of trouble getting pregnant and carrying the infant to full term she had 3 pregnancy end when she was 6 months or less, she had a weak cervix finally she was able to have 3 healthy babies..but she sure had to go through heck and back to get her babies...I felt really horrible for her..but it was that nausea medicine that caused this trouble, she found this out when she was having so many issues trying to have her children that studies proved this would happen. To daughters of mothers who took it, of course her mom felt so bad but it wasn't her fault ❤
@@DNBursky yes she played a very different character, the Mom driven to Identify her Son's Killer. A different voice, hard, impatient. In this story as Billie's Mom she's softer & timid. The producers made good use of quality actors who were not 'stars' but made the difference to a story.
She was also a singer and dancer with an extensive Broadway resume. One of her most prominent movie musical roles was as Katie Brown, the 2nd female lead, in the Doris Day film "Calamity Jane".
What the old Doctor says at 35:02 is correct back then the Doctors prescribed in good faith and patients didn't question their Doctors, We have learned a lot since the 80's, basically, question everything. Thank God they have to put the side effects on the side of the package, many of which are worse than the disease that they claim to cure.
Yes, the same actress who played the mother tracking down her son's hit & run killer plays Billie's mum. They used a lot of bit part actors again & again but they could be very juicy parts! And the Dakota Dr played by the actor who played the old man plagued by neighbourhood brats.
To interject some levity, Charlie, You don't need to worry too much about Whisky. A minimum of three years maturation of raw spirit in the cask, when only the angels take a share, will kill anything.
The more things change, the more they stay the same. "They were told the pills would let them have a baby..." They were told the jabs would return them to normal life.......
Richard de Give, it is amazing how few people are aware of the genocide. I didn’t learn about it until college and that was reading an old theology book.
@@inkyguy fyi - I worked fr Rosen Publishing, publisher of reprints and original K-12 non-fiction books from 2001-2017. They've always included titles on the Armenian Genocide in their GENOCIDE series, and I believe, the Armenian Genocide, is mandated as part of H.S. level history curriculum in many states, including NY and California. But this is only since as early as the mid-late 1980s. Perhaps this LOU GRANT episode helped state curriculum committees form their opinion.
Glenn Leahey, it was not in the curriculum of the states I went to school in. First, there was very, very little world history. It was European and American history. And European history almost exclusively started with the Age of Discovery and the New World. Even in high school I can only remember two years when our history ever got beyond the Civil War. I'm pleased to hear it is mandated in some jurisdictions.
@@inkyguy yup. I believe NY...or NJ was the first state....looks like California put it into "suggested" curriculum as far back as 1985....but not MANDATED until last year or so. There's a movement within the Armenian-American community....that has been active since @1970s...agitating for including it in all 50 states as REQUIRED (not suggested) curriculum. Until NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND under W. ...and more recently RACE TO THE TOP under Obama, there was very little formation of a NATIONAL curriculum, and even today, it's used as a "carrot and stick": if states follow the suggested curriculum, they SHOULD qualify for additional federal education funds....but with all of the budget provisions and politicking....who the frig' knows!

My Mother died 17 months after I was born, God knows what they gave Her.
