- This drill could save your life one day! John Barklow, a clothing system specialist, takes two willing guinea pigs through a dynamic rewarming drill. This drill is a surefire way to dry out your clothes when you get wet in the backcountry. We can't stress enough how important it is to test your own system in a controlled environment, before you find yourself soaking wet in the backcountry in a precarious situation. Enjoy!

Steven, maybe your wool layer didn't dry out as fast as the synthetic because the wool wasn't a skin-tight fit? Whereas Adam's synthetic layer was a "skin tight" fit thus transferring his body heat into the garment at a faster rate and drying it out quicker. I wear a merino wool base layer that fits tight to the skin and I've gotten wet, in my experience, it dried out rather quickly just by walking as you guys did.
This is probably one of the best videos I've seen to date on base layer comparison and the characteristics of each.

Don't get me wrong, I like Sitka gear! I just feel like that would be a key part of a test like this. Doesn't mean the gear isn't impressive. It really is awesome!

Great video! I wish you had a list of the Sitka clothes you were wearing, or put it in the description. I love the Sitka Kelvin Lite Hoody.That thing can take a brutal rain, keep warm, and dry in no time.

Easy for me to say right? I wasn't the guys laying on their backs in ice cold water! I just wondered if it was a function of how tight the garments fit, or if synthetic was better for both. Thanks for making the video guys.

Great video guys! I had to chuckle when you two started your re-warming hike and stumbled a little. We used to call that the zombie stomp. Definitely feels like you have posts for legs until your system gets over the shock. Synthetic is the way to go. Military has been using synthetics in some fashion for many years. Sitka Gear is great stuff.

This should have been done with test subjects who are identical twins.
I think it'd be useful if you could provide the list of clothing that each of the "guinea pigs" were wearing. There are so many weights/names of each garment I'd like to know what they were wearing. Thanks!
Great video ! I have both types of base layers and I have nearly froze in September caught in a rain storm wearing cotton on a 80 degree day so I take it seriously. If I am hunting someplace damp or involving a cold water crossing it will be synthetic for me !
ahh the dreaded cotton! great to hear you have both base layers now, agreed on synthetic, it makes such a difference!
You should always start a fire you can do squats while the fire is get hot you can heat water that you fell In and drink warm water looking for wood fuel for the fire also warms you hiking off to warm yourself without a fire selling high tech gear although nice is not a life saver don’t know why this guy doesn’t like fire it’s been saving life’s for years seen it many times in my 20 years in military and backcountry hunting
I saw Wim Hof get in freezing ice water with a bunch of kids, they stayed in then walked out like it was a cold shower.

I just had to look up this video after hearing the interview with John Barklow on Kafaru. Awesome test. I'm a longtime wool believer, but now I think I'll make the investment in the synthetic system. Most definitely. Great Video. Would like to see more real life situation videos, if possible.
great info. i thought the merino would dry a lot quicker.... good to know..
would be more relevantand controled if the dude with the synthetic baselayer would repeat the test with a merino in a similar setting.
With the massive amount of heat loss from neck and head, I’d assume the right neck gaiter and beanie hat would be essential. Neither of these guys have ideal insulation in those spots.
What synthetic layer were worn for this test?
I’d like to know what the perspective is when the hiker is wearing that gear but their puffy and all clothing gets wet, the test assumes that you have a bone dry puffy to start.
You shouldn't be in your puffy/static insulation layers when on the move
