    Just have to say, I was working on the Stihl FS38.. was stumped like a 10,000 year old tree. I search online for basically half the day. I just stumbled across your video and you showed me exactly what I needed. That stupid hidden hex screw under the guard. Never even saw it, my problem was the flex cable came out of the channel. Me removing that hex screw allowed me to reseat the flex cable into the head. Now it works like new.. thank you for the good explanation of that screw..

    This video saved me about $100 in service and parts charges. My bearing was fine, but the flexible drive shaft had somehow disengaged it. Couldn't figure out how to get bearing out and finally did, pulled shaft out and re-engaged, put back together and back to work.Before, the head would barely spin and would completely stop if went to cut.

    My trimmer sucked up some fishing line and melted in the bushing, seizing it up. I ground off the existing stihl retaining ring with a dremel, and got a E-type circlip from a hardware store. I had a feeling the E-type would pop off, but needed to get the machine running so I just installed it. It worked for about 45 minutes and then popped off. However, disassembling and cleaning seemed to fix my issue so i'm not that upset about having to buy another ring!

    Had one where bearing kept overheating and melting trimmer head.I put grease into bearing and it solved the problem.Took me ages to figure out how the bearing is released.

    Awesome, additionally if your all the way apart, chances are the cable may have came out of the plastic routing piece on the motor side. A quick zip of the T25's at the head, you can string it back in the center as it should be, then reinstall through bearing and secure everything...

    FYI that screw hole is also how you grease them, just use chainsaw bar grease gun and 1-2 pumps and done. Do it every year, last 5x longer then not. doing

    im just about making a modification for this , using ball bearings, I cant understand how a company like Stihl uses a bronze bearing on a part that rotates up to 8000 rpm in an abrasive enviroment .....

    Thanks for the video. My bearing is a bit loose up and down. I removed it per the video and will either replace it or try the suggestion of lubing the bearing, but I have two questions. Once the bearing shaft is removed the cable moves out of position so you just can't push the shaft in. How do I get the cable to line up again so I can reinsert the shaft? Other questions is how do I lube the bearing if I want to try that. Thanks!

      Grease the bearing through the screw that holds the guard bracket on.

    I have 2 perfect fs45 Stihl trimmers, both needing the bearing retainers as yours was. I wish I could fix them. The ‘nut’ came loose. It’s knurled on the shaft, stupid design. And they’re $48 a piece right now :(

  • @markfothebeast
    @markfothebeast Před 6 lety

    Quick bearing test: Hands and arms still vibrating after weed whipping?
    After weed whipping touch the end of the metal shaft near the guard. Did you get burnt? If so, replace shaft bearing! Or find a means to grease it. Unless the bearings actually wore.

    • @markfothebeast

      On a side note; why not just add a xerxes fitting?

    Coolyards - I have the same model. I had the dealer replace the spool with a new spool. Now the spool does not rotate. Of course I couldn't get it started after I brought it home and took the handle apart, so I'm reluctant to bring back to the dealer in case I screwed something up. Any ideas why the spool might not rotate? Perplexed.

      How did you manage that? Mine came apart and I can't seem to figure it out. It's either too tight and the head won't spin, or it's too loose and it falls right off. I can't believe that's how it's held together.

    • @Coolyards

      The driveshaft is a flexible 1/4" cable? It simply pulls out of a 1/4" hole....

    This has to be the worst engineering I have ever seen. Stihl should be ashamed of this trash. Whoever came up with this design deserves a beating

    • @alexandercopeland2849
      @alexandercopeland2849 Před 2 lety +1

      Whats wrong with it? Better then Husqvarna where you have to replace the whole shaft and you can grease the bearing on the Stihl.
