The reason Pride and Prejudice works when so many similar stories don't is because Darcy actually changes his ways because he is inspired by Elizabeth as opposed to superficially changing because he expects to get a relationship if he changes.
exactly! he's able to be set on a path of growth that is purely to his own benefit, because he thinks himself to be a better man than what his actions show, not because he's expecting to get anything out of it. He grows because he wants to be better, not because he feels he has to in order to win her affections.
It's also refreshing to see Elizabeth change. She is a stubborn judgmental woman yet still likable. As the series progresses her snark and bite becomes softer, it's still there but she knows when to speak and in what cadence too.
Another thing that makes it work is that Mr Darcy is entirely justified and understandable. Most love stories are written from one perspective, so you have one perfect person and one loser just trying to catch their notice, but Elizabeth doesn't realise that from Mr Darcy's perspective, he was protecting both his best friend and his sister, from bad marriages. She was wrong about him, as much as he was wrong about her. They both change.
@@rebecky5ever yep and this was clear at the very end of the book when Lizzy doesn't laugh at Darcy because "he had not yet learned to laugh at himself". She understands he still has a lot pride and rather than mocking him like she would have in the past, she's sensitive to it.
I would have to disagree. I think pride and prejudice works because they BOTH realize they BOTH need to change and have judged each other unfairly. I’m stunned at how many people do not realize that Darcy is the prejudiced, and Elizabeth is the pride. If you read the book, it goes much more into this, especially in the beginning when you get to hear a lot of Mr. Darcy’s inner dialogue. He’s essentially dumbfounded by his attraction to Elizabeth. He can’t understand it.
You know a story is amazing when, 200 years after it is published, we still crush over Darcy, cringe at Mr Collins, and get annoyed by Lady Catherine.
Maybe it's because I'm a guy, but I don't see what's so bad about Mr Collins, he might be socially inept and boring, but he obviously has a kind heart and cares about the feelings of his wife (after he marries) which is quite a progressive idea from that time, he gives her space and time to herself without asking anything in return.
@@the98themperoroftheholybri33 Mr Collins isn't bad really. For me at least, it's a few things that put me off him. Yes, there's the social ineptitude which, especially back then, was important to have, but really for me it's the fact that he wants to marry out of duty or expectation ("I have to be an example to the parish by marrying" and "Lady Catherine said I need to find a wife") and to that end any woman would do as long as she was suitable to Lady Catherine. And when he proposes, he talks mostly of how it benefits himself and, as it's his wont to do, uses romantic phrases ("the violence of my affections") without passion, again, most likely because he feels it is expected from him to say these things.
There is something to be said of the positive effects of his strong sense of duty and obligation to finding and taking care of his wife. Charlotte will be provided for, no doubt, and will have a stable lifestyle. That is more than most women could say and I cannot blame her in the least for wanting stability in lieu of the rise and fall of passions and love. But we are talking about why women aren't in love with Mr Collins, and that is because Mr Collins is not in love with them. You could argue he isn't interested in having a relationship with them other than perhaps a social one (as opposed to a romantic one). Like I said, Mr Collins isn't a bad guy, he's just a guy most women would settle for unless he began to show an interest in them outside of how it would benefit himself.
Hope this helps and let me know if you'd like me to clarify. Women are complex and unfortunately seemingly (and sometimes actually are) contradictory creatures so I can understand how it can be confusing.
@@the98themperoroftheholybri33It's more like we cringe at the fact he centers his life around appeasing lady Catherine.
This is so beautifully directed. Never get tired of watching this film.
In this era, people will address someone Ms/Mr + Last name if they’re the eldest of the family who is not married. This is why they address Jane as “Ms. Bennet” and Elizabeth as “Ms. Elizabeth”. They address Fitzwilliam as “Mr. Darcy” and Georgiana as “Ms. Georgiana”, and they address Charles as “Mr. Bingley” and Caroline as “Ms. Caroline”. However, if the eldest of the family is married, the title will go to the next one. We can assume that Jane and Elizabeth is married now so the next one who is gonna be “Ms. Bennet” is Mary.
It’s a little bit confusing because when the Bennets visits Jane in Bingley’s house, the servant introduced all sisters as “Ms. Bennet” which is NOT accurate but at least it’s funny
Also Sir William Lucas, at the Meryton Assembly, introduced the Bennets as: Mrs Bennet, Miss Jane Bennet, Elizabeth and Miss Mary Bennet. Not sure why he didn't call Elizabeth "Miss" though.
Don't get it. You've seen this. You're acting like you never did
@@leonh.kalayjian6556I had a stroke reading that, what are you trying to convey?
No, Caroline is addressed as Miss Bingley because she's the eldest Miss Bingley, as her brother is obviously not a Miss Bingley and her sister has married and is now Mrs Hurst. She would have been Miss Caroline when Louisa was still Miss Bingley and not Mrs Hurst (assuming Louisa is the elder sister).
Miss Georgiana is Miss Darcy. Calling her Miss Georgiana is probably an affectionate holdover from her nursery days, but is not the normal mode of address for her.
I love the book because she goes on all these walks at Lady Catherine's and she tells him where she likes to walk in hopes to tell him where not to go, and she doesn't know that in his mind, she's encouraging their secret meet-ups because he thinks that, that's her way of encouraging him courting her lol
My boy couldn't understand a single cue but we love him from that
@@ameliatorres6162And she underestimated her own appeal
Her politeness dictated that she couldn’t give a more obvious clue: “Don’t go here, here, or here, because I like to walk alone.”
It’s the eternal problem of nice=flirting in men’s minds.
Two scenes:
1. When Mr Bennet cries with pride for Lizzy.
2. When Mr. Darcy says: You have bewitched me body and soul. And i love... i love... I love You.
I mean come on man, that's the stuff of legend 🙌😍
In the book, Mr. B did not cry, and Mr. Darcy did not say those things.
@@williammkydde i'm talking about the movie, not the book. But thanks
@@jcmartinez1808 Fair enough. As long as nobody associate the name of JA with the film. Unfortuntly, most viewers will not open the book and will live the rest of their lives believing that they know Jane Austen. All the best to you.
@@williammkydde i don't think i know Jane Austen, just really like this film. Best to you too
@@williammkydde I think I know JA, and I think there is enough faithfulness to characters (excepting, maybe, Miss Darcy) and certainly enough direct Austen quotes in this film to draw people in to reading her work - so promoting both literacy and the love of some of the finest novels in British Literature - imho.
One of my favourite novels and movies too. An interesting theory is that Darcy was closed off initially because he was depressed after his father's death. And this made him appear aloof and prideful. If so, it adds another great, subtle, show-don't-tell layer to his character.
I love this movie so much. I didn't understand it when I was younger, but watching it now, I understand a lot of it is subtext. Hardly anyone says what they mean in this movie. I think the reason it works is because it's just so simple. It doesn't have fancy camera tricks or special effects or anything, it's just a classic story, with great actors, a director who can get the best out of them, and a fantastic score.
Also, fun fact, that sunset kiss scene was not really planned, it was just fortuitous. They had planned to have them kiss, but at the time they were filming the sun was setting, so the director was just like "Go for it." and they got that beautiful shot of Darcy and Elizabeth kissing with the sun setting between them.
I love this story, but my favourite version is the BBC adaptation from the 90’s with Colin Firth and Jenifer Ehle. Teenage me was sold! Glad this brings you so much joy. I still squeal with delight throughout 30 years later 🤷🏾♀️😊
YES ❤️🔥❤️🔥
Yeah, looove the Colin Firth version 😍❤️ ..also Angelina gotta watch Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, god that's great too♥️♥️♥️
Yess 1995 VERSION IS THE BEST
Watching the excellent BBC miniseries adaptation with Firth & Ehle actually makes me mad at this shortchanged adaptation despite the wonderful director's visuals and scenery and the wonderful cast here! The story, I now find, utterly shortchanged the audience as to why and what happens! And not just a convenient end of film wrap up. The plot writing I cannot get past now for its injustice. Like only serving frosting without the cake.
@@genghisgalahad8465 Both can exist. It is a well directed (and I daresay adapted - because the spirit of the piece really Is there) version of the same story. Why would you be mad at it?
This is my comfort movie too and my 100% fave scene is where Lizzie goes Bella swan after she gets the letter explaining everything. I love it it’s my favorite bc you can see them both change their entire minds
YES, A THOUSAND TIMES, YES! This is my absolute favorite moovie, and I was desperate for an Ange commentary of it. Thank You!
this is good but i still prefer 10 things i hate about you.
I finished the book Wednesday night and I just watched the film yesterday morning. I must say, they gave the characters justice, especially Lydia’s. I just didn't expect to see giggly Lizzy 😭 though I really loved the whole experience upon reading and watching this masterpiece 🫶
P&P is the gold standard of enemies to lovers, because they are really only "enemies" due to misjudgment, misunderstanding and miscommunication that is not contrived, but rather is the nature and standard for their class and time. But when that is allowed to fall away, it's apparent how well matched they actually are (nevermind that they were instantly physically attracted to each other as well). There's no real heinous or relevant barrier, they just needed to get iver themselves, get to know each other, grow into better people and take the chance despite the perveived imbalance of their standing (although after all Mr Darcy is a gentleman and Elizabeth a gentleman's daughter).
Between this & Bridgerton Season 2 "you are bane of my existence & the object of all my desires" I truly will never get over!! I loveeeeeeee Pride & Prejudice.
Literally love this movie and the book sm, also definitely always was crushing on Mr Darcy. The scene with him entering the ball and all of them going silent always makes me chuckle but the one with him aggressively opening the door and then just standing awkwardly in front of Elizabeth is even better, I just can’t
Love this reaction! Pride and Prejudice is the perfect comfort movie and I've probably re-watched it 100 times. Some of my underrated movie recommendations are "Penelope" (2006), "Mirror Mirror" (2012), "Mansfield Park" (2007) and "Bridget Jones Diary" (2001)! 😊
Penelope was great! Made me fall in love with James McAvoy!!!
They are all inferior to "Belle", honestly, every Pride and Prejudice lover should watch Belle, yet hardly anyone knows it. On of the very few movies that give me the P&P feel.
Georgiana Darcy played the same song from the intro of the movie when Liz was reading and got home. Perhaps it’s because Pemberley is gonna be her second home. The details and the brilliance of the cinematography of this film. Wow.
I like this idea. The french Wikipedia page of the movie even says when Lizzie walks alone in Pemberley is a way for her to realise she could be the mistress of that house and show her another side of Mr Darcy
Never seen Pride and Prejudice before, but it looks amazing. I might have to watch it myself.
You should watch Ever After with Drew Barrymore! It’s a Cinderella retelling and the best version of Cinderella imo. Similar vibes to pride and prejudice!!
I AGREE! best cinderella adaptation to date.
The amount of love I have for this movie and even the play is unbelievable. Wish I could go back to high school and do this show every single day
What is your favorite line in this film? ~ Check out my roadtrip vlog to see how I got to MID's house! czcams.com/video/yLpPlfl5VcQ/video.html
"You mistake me my dear. I have the highest respect for them. They've been my constant companions theese twenty years"
"What are men compared to rocks and mountains?"
"Believe me men are either eaten up arrogance or stupidity if they are amiable they're so easily led they have no minds of their own whatsoever."
“what excellent boiled potatoes. it’s been many years since i’ve had such an exemplary vegetable.”
The stutter when Darcy confesses his love for a second time was a great addition in the movie, and the zombies... oh wait...
It's crazy how watching someone who already watched pride and prejudice react is actually better than most other videos where new people react. At least you were fangirling about the rain scene
I think I’ve watched this film around 300 times. There were YEARS where I just had it playing on repeat in my house, while cooking, doing chores, reading, drawing, dancing, painting, etc. I do believe I reupholstered dining chairs while watching. Not quite embroidering cushions, but definitely an accomplishment ✨
SO glad you did a commentary for this, it's my favourite film of all time, so all your reactions were so relatable, it's like I was watching myself lol 🙈
Ahhhhh I love this so much!!!!!! Watching someone have the same feels and reactions as me when I watch this movie and ALSO QUOTE IT. This is perfect I’m so happy
This is also my comfort movie, it brings me so much joy. My family has accepted that I watch this as often as I do, but it’s just so wonderfully made. Loved your video.
This is the most fun reaction and editing to this film, love it so much!
Omg ive been waiting so long for her to react to this movie. It’s one of my favorites and I’m so excited to see Angelina watch it!!♥️✨
This movie is one of my all time favorites. It is beautifully done, all the shots, the music, dialogue and the chemistry between The cast is superb. I Love The book a lot and this is to me the Best adaptation. It changes a bit the story Here and there but compensates with everything else being perfect
Omg I actually was going to watch pride and prejudice before I saw that you uploaded this. Crazyyy
Perfect video title for a perfect movie👏🏼👏🏼
I have watched this movie hundreds of times and now I’m watching other ppl react to it 😂😂😂. I just can’t get enough. I’m in love with Darcy and the actor who played him perfectly.
This is one of my favorite comfort movies too. It really feels like a warm hug. :)
Is 5 am and I am seeing your reaction, loved the vibe ❣️
I’ve watched the film 12679 times and never noticed that scene where Mr Bingley touches Jane’s dress 😭
I love this film and the mini series so much ❤
Beautiful film. Great reaction. Very entertaining. Thank you.
Love you and your reactions, especially this one. Had a time I watched this movie twice in a single day, consecutively. Just sharing hehe
Lol yes!! The very first time I watched this movie (at age 15) I finished it, then immediately started it over and watched it again 😂
@@pizzadohpaz glad I'm not alone. But it's a bit weird in my part cause I'm a guy. Or maybe that's just me 😅
@@eugenemerle5592 good writing and good direction are for anyone! 🤷♀️
Same here. The movie is one of my go-to comfort movie, and the soundtrack is one of my go-study tunes. ☺
OK, now that you've watched this one... it's time for PRIDE AND PREJUDICE AND ZOMBIES!!
Masterful editing in this reaction
I don't know if you've ever heard of it but my favourite adaption of this is Pride & Prejudice & Zombies. It's absolutely unhinged but I love it. Also Lily James, Matt Smith and many many other great actors/ actresses are in this movie. And it has badass women, simping men and, well, Zombies
I BEG YOU PLEASE DO "EMMA" AND "LITTLE WOMEN"! YOU'LL LOVE IT. Also you might like the "Ocean's" movies. "Ocean's 8" would be most preferable.
I watched this on a whim in 2007, and then downloaded and watched it many times after that. I think the only other movies I've watched as much was Top Gun and the Goonies. A lot of guys got into the Notebook back then, I couldn't, but got into this movie. This was my "Notebook".
Man, now I have to rewatch The Lizzie Bennet Diaries again.
Everytime someone reacts to Pride and prejudice I like scream sooo hard you could hear me from the moon. I totally get you, this movie is totally my safe space bc me and my mom share the same love for Jane Austen so it's always been a way to bond for us.
I love how you talk about Darcy's social axiety, he's often misunderstood to be and a** but in reality for me he's Just not used to have real people talk to him, everybody wants something from him so I genuinely feel like he falls in love with Lizzie bc of her sincerity and strong character.
Also if you haven't red the book I totally recommend It, it's a little different from the 2005's movie but in it the argues between Lizzie and Darcy are FIRE. They almost jump to each other's neck (most of the time Lizzie bc you understand immediately that Darcy is into her) but this movie is sooo good. It tells kind of a different story, but it's almost more realistic also bc Austen didn't describe their relationship in a very "day-to-day" way (for exemple the finale scene with the kiss doesn't exist in the book).
Last but not least you should react to the 95' series about Pride and prejudice, in it Darcy is played by Colin Firth and it's so similar to the book that's like a totally different feeling.
Loved your reaction 💕
I think the kissy final scene is also absent in a different released cut of this film. The one I first saw ended with the happy tears talk between Lizzie and her dad, I believe.
@@lepuuttelu yes, if I 'm not wrong that scene Is only in the American version of the movie. I'm italian and here the scene isn't part of the movie itself.
Loving this new setup you got. But no joke aside I like this lighting on you, except maybe the bright white part.
Ok, so I have no idea who you are. This video just popped up in my timeline and I clicked, cause, you know, duh. I’m hooked. We could be best friends, cause I watch P&P the exact same way every time. Can’t wait to watch your other reactions. Subscribing! 🤣🤣🤣
My mom and I watch this movie a ton. I love the story and the characters. The more you watch it a few times the better you catch the meanings and dialogue.
An important note to make is army officers at this era were viewed as scoundrels and poor, it wasn't until the Napoleonic war that army officers were viewed as a good prospect for a husband, because many had gained a lot of wealth and many heroic tales of battles against Napoleon were common in newspapers
Perfect soundtrack... I love the way they capture the environment. Mr. Collins is hilarious.
Just an all around wonderful love story.
Talulah Riley, the actress who plays Mary was married to Elon Musk twice! She is plain and simple in this movie, but she is a very beautiful woman.
This is the only with which I enjoy the miscommunication trope. (You should have seen me when I realized the whole story is a miscommunication trope because I usually hate this kind of thing.)
This is the Pride and Prejudice movie that made me fall in love with the story. I had seen parts of it and parts of the Colin Firth one when I was younger and thought it must be the most boring thing (because of the historical aspects and the way they spoke) but one day, I finally sat down and watched this one. I fell in love with it immediately and now P&P is one of my favorite stories. My favorite version is actually the Lizzie Bennet Diaries web series.
That 1995 mini series with Colin Firth is a MUST watch! Their relationship in that series is even better because there’s more time for it to develop 😭
The way a person managed to make us all freak out at a hand!!!! Superb.
That last scene isn’t in the movie on U.K. Netflix! I just screamed because I’m like WHAT IS THIS I HAVENT SEEN THIS 😂
now do Pride, Prejudice, and Zombies for the Halloween season
Angelina trying to.figure out how they filmed the one shots is everything
this movie is pure food for the soul
If you love this, you should really check out the mini series Lost in Austen. A mega-fan of the books/movies gets sucked into the world in Elizabeth's place and there are lots of hijinks that go on.
Very fun and worth the watch.
Hey Angelina, since October has started you think you will react to the following Halloween/Spooky films such as Scary Godmother, Casper 1995, Over the Garden Wall, The Haunted Mansion (2003), Frankenweenie, Coraline, ParaNorman, and Hocus Pocus 1-2?
I love the BBC show version with Colin Firth! Such a good cast! Lady Catherine and Mr Collins are creepier and Mrs Bennet is way more hysterical 🤣. I suppose I'm biased as i saw that version first but it's cute. We studied the book at school and everyone hated it and i was having a great time 🤣🤣
I'm biased too because I saw this first😊
13:40 Best line in the whole movie. I will never not have a crush on Keira Knightly.
Knightly later worked with Tom Hollander (Collins) on a couple of the Pirates movies. He was Lord Beckett in the second and third movies.
I just watched it for the first time too!!
lol you're totally me when watching the rain scene!!!! 😍
Also one of my favourite comfort movies ❤ what do you think of the 1995 miniseries because I adore that one as well.
I prefer the older one with Colin Firth, but I'm just partial because of my age. This was still well done and I see why people love it. I think you'd like Bridget Jones Diary because there's a lot of the same chemistry between the FMC and the MC (Played by Colin Firth)
I should hope so, Bridget Jones Diary is literally an adaptation of Pride and Prejudice
this is also my comfort film. i've watched it more than ten times (i know this bc of trakt tv) and i can also quote some scenes 🙏
My favorite ❤️ such a nice film 🎥 I watch it yearly or twice a year
Love the natural look, Ang!
its always SOOO JARRING to see the US alternate ending of the film!
24:30 Only the eldest unmarried daughter would be referred to as “Miss Bennet”. All the others would be called by their first, or their first and last name. As seen in the scene where the man at Bingley’s is introducing all the Bennet visitors by saying Miss with their first and last names. He did the same for Elizabeth when she was introduced as a visitor. They didn’t show it, but he would have introduced Jane as just Miss Bennet.
This movie gives me the same comfort as Before Sunset and Mean Girls. Also Mary's actor was Elon Musk's first wife
I GOOGLED THAT BC I ALWAYS THOUGHT SHE LOOKED LIKE GRIMES and I was shook when I found out she was his first wife!!!!!!
I need to find a mist-shrouded meadow to walk through.
Thanks for the video. I'm very fond of this film for the same reasons you are. Let me know what you think of the 90s adaptation with Jennifer Ehle and Colin firth.
I 💜 This Book & This Version Of The Movie!
7:09 LMFAO love this
Girl I love this movie too. ❤❤❤
Love to "watch" this movie w someone who gets this movie and loves it as much as i do (some of the reactions to it are just painful to watch tbh)

I never seen this Movie I’m am really busting out laughing And yes I do enjoy listening to audiobooks 😂😁I think The word that you are looking for Banter And I have seen Demon slayer before
I have never ssen that last scene ôO
Not sure if you've reacted to Persuasion 1995. My favorite Jane Austen book and movie too.
Even if it's for personal viewing and not the channel, you should watch the 1995 BBC miniseries Pride and Prejudice with Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle. It's so good. I like this one, but it almost feels like an abridged version of that one. So if you love the story and characters, do yourself a favor and watch the 1995 miniseries!
I watched the BBC version once, but I just don't like Jennifer Ehle as Elizabeth. Something just feels .. off? I can't really explain it really, other than I prefer Keira Knightley's version. And the chemistry between Keira and Matthew was much better than Firth's and Ehle's imo.
@@19Rena96 It took me about 3 repeated viewings of this Pride and Prejudice to stop feeling like KK was "off" as Elizabeth, because I'd imprinted on JE as Elizabeth for years prior. Whichever you watched first is going to influence how you view the other, but they're both really good.
Better still, read the novel.
Normally i prefer blind reactions to media but ive never enjoyed a reaction more than this one XD. just the enthusiasm and quotibg things before they happen so fucking funny. Also mood bc this is how i watch this movie too
