I use the RChannel (high boost, low-mid cut, and RVox), MJUC compressor, and the F6(aggressively taiming the low/low mids) just three plugins not including the tuning. It sounds very close to my final product and its low latency
A dynamic eq makes for the best dresser. Use the preview button to hear only what you are cutting to help find the silence then scan between 5k and 7k for the loudest Tss sounds and reduce by about 3db. Also nothing beats manually adjusting your vocal recording volume peaks before it even gets to a compressor. Allows for a much more natural sounding and upfront vocals. Lastly a harmonic saturator really helps adds 3 dimensionality to the vocals. Cheers
This is what I’m looking up now lol I use Saturn 2 for saturation but I feel it brings out a bit of mud, what’s a good plug in or setting for Saturn 2 if u know?
People saying the chain sucks but it isn't terrible, it's just standard. I do think the plugins are out of order tho. It's usually best to de-ess before comp cuz de-essers use dynamic changes to find what it should reduce. Putting it on a compressed signal can make it harder for it to work cuz the sibilance peaks have already been slightly smoothed out. Also adding an EQ before comp typically gives you a warmer tone, where adding an EQ after comp usually gives you a clearer tone, so I PERSONALLY would comp before EQ, but it could depend on the song
Before i learned how to use a compressor i would go through and manually adjust the gain at different points to control the dynamics. Still do it from time to time
Your reverb ms time has a formula. 60,000/BPM * 2 = MS of decay. You can then divide or multiply this number by 2 to get perfect timing for a lot of things in the mix that use MS
And now do that in a Hardware Channel Strip 😅 Good preparation (Dry sounding room, matching Mic to the Singers Voice, solid Monitoring) makes mixing way easier.
Bruh this is well explained and totally a fine video, but kinda a wasted opportunity - if you had even a short vocal sample looping so we could hear dry-eq'd-comp'd-de-essed-reverb it would make this video 100x better, and one I would share to some friends who need it!
I used to not think that. I can make about any mic sound as crispy as the 103. But the 103 out of the box is so clean, I don't even know what to do to make it sound better. I just purchased the 103, focusrite isa one, and a lin2a. It's a game changer even though it cost almost 2.8k. I started with nothing and cracked plug ins. Now I have nice stuff and use no cracks. Isn’t it advisable to go back into the mix if your bumping your track past the nyquist theory of level matching, meaning anything over twice the perceived volume is too much?
Doing a lot of subtractive EQ on vocals is not a good idea - I’d just boost top end and midrange and also compress them much heavier in multiple stages before de-essing
If you can’t get something sounding good with EQ, compression, a de-esser, and a reverb then you got some work to do. Sorry, but there’s not supposed to be any magic to it.

Basically the same vocal chain without the reverb. You can also go heavier on the compression to make it sound more upfront.
The proper pre-delay and reverb time are dependent on the tempo of your song. Divide your bpm by 60,000 to convert it to ms and use this number.
That’s why I stated in the video to experiment with this setting based on the tempo of your song.
