- Created by Page van Amson for the Wellesley Needlepoint Collection. This video will teach you how to do the basketweave stitch on your needlepoint canvas. Learning the correct way to do the stitch will help prevent faint lines in your work and cause less distortion.
Note: the clamp used for this video is a Needlework System 4 lap stand and clamp. There are many good videos on CZcams that describe the stand and it's accessories. You may call our shop to order one if you are interested: 781-235-2477 - Jak na to + styl
I’m almost done with a very complicated Christmas stocking project and want to use basket weave on the cuff background. I now think that I can do that thanks to your perfectly clear demonstration. Thank you!!!
Thank you very much! I needlepointed 40+ years ago and did continental and never learned basketweave. Coming back to this hobby I noted that many use basketweave for background and I wanted to try it. I had heard the expression down the pole and up the steps and didn't know what it meant-your explanation was perfect!!
Best demonstration of basket weave I’ve come across. Very easy to understand. Thank you so much. If there are more tutorials, where you are the instructor, I would love to know how to access them.
I’m new to needlepoint and that was hands down the best, clearest, most well done lesson I’ve seen! Thank you so much!!! 💕
Thank you, I did needle pointe many years ago and had forgotten how. You brought it back. Wonderful video.
Excellent tutorial! Thank you, this really gives a clear understanding of the stitch. I’ll be starting a first needlepoint kit and I I needed this instruction!
You really are such an amazing teacher! Thank You x
Love this lady, her voice, her instructions etc. A+Thank You, wish I had this when I started 25 years ago. Was ever taught right
Very clear explanation and excellent photography make this the best demo video on basketweave stitch and how to work with the grain of the canvas for smoother stitches. Thanks!
So glad I found your video. I have avoided basket weave stitch for years because it perplexed me. You just made it “click “. Thanks!!
This is by far the most helpful video on basket weave I’ve found. I couldn’t figure out how or what poles and steps were LOL or why people even did it. Thank you for your explanation!!
I am a newbie who has just started stitching and took my first lesson yesterday. LOVE IT! I learned the continental stitch and the satin stitch, but I could not get the basketweave stitch at all. You have just made me understand it and now I totally get it. Thanks for the explanation of how to read a canvas -- very good. I've subscribed and am glad to have found you. THANKS SO MUCH! I'll be looking for your other videos because I love your style of teaching.
Less distortion of the canvas! I finally understand why to use this stitch!
Thank you. I love this tutorial. As a child I embroidered, then taught myself to knit. I love the idea of needle point. You are easy to understand. I am deaf yet I could understand you. You speak clearly. I am anxious to try needle point.
Amazing! I am a new stitcher and I found this video so helpful! Thank You!
You explained and demonstrated that so well! Thank you!
VERY well explained & visually clear. Thank you!
Perfect tutorial.... Thank You! 🌺
Thank you for this tutorial! It was very clear and helpful.
So very very clear. Wonderful
Thank you so much! I had never heard this before and your explanation and demo makes perfect sense - can't wait to see how this works out on my stitching. (Just picking needlepoint up again after one mini course in HS - about 45 years later - can't wait.)
Hopefully you've found it makes you work smoother! Happy stitching!
Me too. Think I need to pick up something that I painted myself, started many years ago, and never finished.

Very helpful video, thank you so much!
I bought a near finished needlepoint at an estate sale, it just needs a small portion of the canvas finished and your video helped me identify the stitches I need to use is basket weave. Without checking first I attempted to use cross stitch for a few rows but the stitches didn’t match the finished work, which was done in a diagonal line and my cross-stitch just did not look right. Thank you for your excellent explanation.
Thanks for this deep details really appreciate able thanks again
Very beautiful tutorial 😍😍😍
Great explanations!
Thank you very much, helping me a lot.
excellent explanation. can you tell me how many holes per inch does that canvas have? regards
Thank you! ❤
Thank you! Omg I can't believe I was doing this so wrong! Lol
Thank you!!!!
Hello, Mrs. Wellesley. Greetings from Spain, what kind of thread do you use in this demonstration because I am trying to learn but here in Spain no one practices this type of mono canvas embroidery. greetings
And when you look at the back of your work, it will be like a woven basket.
Thank you
I’ve not ever had my finished project warped due to NOT using basketweave. If you put your project on Stretcher Bars and have an even stitching tension it won’t warp.
Can you please tell me where can I fine the canvas thank you for sharing your video
Do you start on a pole or a step? Or does it matter as long as you're going in the right direction?
Hello, what is the name of this fabric or net that you used, and what is the name of its texture
What kind of material is this?
I'm new to needlepoint. Does it really matter if I work downhill on vertical or uphill on horizontal intersections on diagonal stitching? I don't understand why.
Same here!
