They only redo the ice once a season. Coincidentally when they do the ice for the year, they start with several layers of ice on concrete, they they paint it with water soluble paint. Then at the end of the year they melt the ice and the paint just drains away with the water. That way they don't have to scrape up paint every year.

You are correct. I worked at the old arena once hockey season was over. They melted the ice and got it ready for arena league football

They don't pick up the ice. The ice is underneath, they just cover it up with the greyish pieces
