  • In episode 3 we talk about the the easy way to design new parts, and why I designed a better rudder for my Avid Flyer MKIV.
If you need parts made, send me the details here:

Check out the Piper PA-18 tail feather shape. Both rudder and elevators have the balance tabs. Don't confuse with Cub J-3 which do not have tabs.

I’ve got an Avid Mk4 and I have thought about doing this too.

Sweet! Yeah I’ll post updates as I work through it. Let me know what you end up doing.

@@letsbuildthis I don’t know what we are going to start with yet. I’m thinking about more horsepower. Maybe a Rotax 670 with a 4:1 gearbox and a larger prop. Need bigger tires and brakes too.

So cool seeing the process of a plane being built

Thanks! It’s definitely going to be a learning process, but we’ll get to enjoy that together.

Very cool! Interested in seeing the carbon fiber work. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks! Yeah I’m stoked to get into some carbon fiber work! I’m planning on quite a few pieces over the length of the project.

I realize that what you're doing with the tail surfaces isn't a huge change, but you made no mention of any kind of stress analysis. Bigger surfaces means more load on those surfaces which gets transferred to the fuselage tubing which now sees higher loads. You're reducing the safety factor of the structure. The Avid is already a very lightly built structure and you really do not know how close to the limit it already is. Yes, yes, likely you won't fall out of the sky but that's not an excuse to ignore added structural loads and at least some napkin calculations to see if you;re pushing things too far.

Thanks for the feedback, you’re 100% spot on, the part where I briefly talked about that didn’t make the Final Cut for the video, but should be included. I wouldn’t even considering making any changes that I haven’t seen precidente for or other data suggesting as a good change todo, and also testing out/ validating. I actually had the chance to chat with someone at Oshkosh yesterday that also did the mod with the balanced surfaces. He reported good performance, but yeah there is a lot more unseen detail and planning before ever considering it. That’s why I CAD things out before hand. I’ll be sure to be more transparent and clear about those details in the future.

It's hard to tell from just the video, but it appears your new tail ribs aren't really aligned to anything. I would suggest laying them out so that they are in line with the airstream when the aircraft is in flight attitude. Be aware that adding an airfoil makes the surface more effective than the original flat-plate design, so your control feel and effectiveness will be different.

This could not be a more wanted CZcams channel to watch right now with my new mark iv purchase.
I saw this online when I was buying mine. I’m glad it went to someone who will be engaged in the community and share.
If only I was savvy on CZcams and cad design.
I am looking to redo my dash with some iPads and ilevil. Any chance you have dems in digi form?
    Keep it up !

Awesome, glad to hear it! Thanks! Well, all things can be learned, so just focus on a small improvement each day.
The ilevel stuff is nice. I’m considering it myself. Could you send me more details in the form in the description and I can see where I can help?

Kitfox decided after 1 particularly well publicized crash to use aluminum for the instrument panel because it deforms instead of shattering with a bunch of splinters when the pilots face hits it.
