I was having such a tough time around the end of last year and AET was my escape. I felt absolutely miserable once it had ended. In so many ways it boosted my confidence when talking to people and being more myself in the videos I shoot, because it was so raw and so human. They probably don't know me, but I felt like part of the gang when I would sleep early and wake up at 3 am in the morning just to be there for the livestreams (never have I given enough effs to that for anything else). So thanks a lot, Simon, for getting us AET tribe members the closure we needed 🙌
Hey Abdullah, I feel your pain! I was so disappointed too when AET finished but I guess all things must come to an end. It was great to chat to Andrew and hear what went down from his perspective - and about the exciting things he's got coming up with Time + Tide 🙌
About Effing Time was one of the best podcasts ever.... they should bring it back ...at least 4 times a year

I was recovering from a nasty motorcycle crash when AET more-or-less got started, and what a hell of a tonic it was while recovering! Of course, it was SO amazingly good that I recalled that line from Prince's *1999*, "But life is just a party/And parties weren't meant to last." It would be fun to think of "the band" getting back together, butI can't abide a half-assed attempt. If they can do it well, hopefully they will.

Excellent interview. I was a massive fan of About Effing Time ... I probably still am! I think the secret behind its success was the passion of the collaborators and the fact that it just chimed perfectly with a cultural upswing in interest in watches and the history of horology. Thank you.

I watched it in one breath. Very genuine, humble, and interesting conversation.
If watch enthusiasm is a religion or a cult of a sort 😅, it needs places of worship. Brand boutiques, ADs, and watch fares aren’t those places.
We all want to be part of something bigger, be welcomed and heard. I hope T&T London will be such a place.
This hoppy of hours is about people and their stories as much as it is about watches.

Completely agree with you. This is the one thing that many non-watch friends of mine never get. Watches are always so much more than the actual product itself, or even the brands.

When I was a kid, I dreamed of having a watch. I was commuting to school and needed to be on time. Adults wore them. They could tell the time. So I’d had to find one with a watch and ask :)
To me getting a watch was like joining adulthood.
Wearing a mechanical watch now makes me feel like I’m part of a community.
I love analog things. I’m fascinated that a small mechanical machine strapped to my wrist can measure time. The only true commodity there is. I need it to tell time, it needs me to run. Watches I wear become part of my experiences, stories, and memories. It’s like having a friend that is always with you.
So there’s the sentimental value.
Sorry, I went on a rant.
It just shows how good the community is. By engaging with each other via content, comments or in person we bring up genuine emotions.
At the end of the day that’s what it’s all about. Wear a watch that makes you smile and share the hoppy with likeminded people 😊
@@petrokersta5293 Thanks for sharing. I really felt an enormous rush of respect towards mechanical watches since I bought a 1959 Seiko. It's beautifully aged. But I bought it preowned. And it just fascinates me to think that this used to be somebody's watch for over half a century. Like somebody actually wore this and their marks and dents are on it. And I pray that God bless that person, but like wow.. that showed me another side of watchmaking that we don't see too often nowadays, because we just the latest, the shiniest stuff.
But yeah, I kind of had a similar experience in that way as a kid. Always saw my dad and brother wearing a watch. And that was before cell phones became a thing.

Listening to him about why ‘effing time’ makes me think of celebrity divorces and their publicity releases. ‘We love and respect each other so much, we have to split..’ short answer : it didn’t make either as much as they wanted to, or if at all…the other ‘angle’ was that all the funding came from Andrew, and he decided to pull the plug when it didn’t make any money…
I can forsee Time+Tide growing in the wake of Hodinkee stumbling, but then growing too big and also falling into the "Hodinkee trap"

In a year when the most complicated watch in the world is released during W&W and nobody really talks about it and thinks it was a boring year with Vacheron Berkley Grand Complication and IWC brings out an incredible horological marvel with the eternal calendar and moonphase - then we know it’s not about Horology but just hype watches. Any other year before we would have all been wowed by the releases of Rolex and Tudor that in some years only released dial colors before. What if Rolex now puts their syloxi hairspring in all watches, we would scream BOOOOOOORING but they release a funky dial and we say INNOVATIOOOOOON. 😂 we are a crazy bunch
This was my (and John Mayer's) point exactly - what exactly makes it a flat year, if IWC and VC are still changing the game?

After what happened in London last weekend I would’ve thought somebody in the CZcams watch community would be brave enough to take that on but I understand exactly why they won’t.

There was a robbery (so they say but it probably was) at a secondhand watch seller in Richmond London last week on Saturday , It’s not just what happen it’s what we all know is behind what happened. The young lad who was in the showroom committed suicide on the Sunday afternoon. What’s really quite disgusting and laughable is everybody knows what’s really going on. They all know about the authorised dealers selling to flippers. They all know that nobody really should be selling secondhand watches that are under 10 years old. They all know that there is crime and dodgy dealing.
There is a real dark side to watches that nobody wants to talk about . Teddy has touched on it briefly, but that’s about it.
I read about this in the week. Horrendous that the young guy in the store took his own life for fear of being held responsible for not stopping the robbery 😢
I was fully expecting to see some commentary on this from Paul Thorpe but he seems to be focusing in more political areas these days.
@@Robert-vw3od I live in the neighbouring suburb and hadn't heard about this, there's definitely a dark side to it all, but I can assure you there's no conspiracy not to cover it from our side - wherever there's money, there's crime, wherever there are desirable exclusive things, there's a black market. I'll look more into this story though, so thanks for bringing it up.

I can tell you what he would’ve said this was a violent robbery, then he might have talked about how crime has been allowed to flourish and said something about immigration or the failure of the police or something along those lines. what he would not have said is what needs saying. These people who sell secondhand watches are all dodgy. They might have a lovely coffee machine and a nice showroom but they are basically watch flippers and the CZcams community have a tremendous amount of them. they are buying and selling almost new watches predominantly Rolex or AP PP. how are they getting hold of these almost new watches? Look at that producer Michael. how is it possible? He has these almost new watches that he can flip and sell? I can’t go in the shop and buy them. Why is that? because it is a murky dodgy sewer. that young lad has been very unlucky. He did not understand what he was really involved in until his world has come crashing down around him with terrifying speed, I doubt those people who own that business will have said kind words to him and put a loving arm around his shoulder. There is an awful lot more I can say which we all know.

The community is created for business purposes. At the end of the day, it's a business, and at some point, this 'community' will be sold to someone like LVMH and you know what.....thats fine. Good on him.....we all want a house down the peninsula anyway. But lets not pretend its something its not.
Beg to differ, while we have ambitions as a business, to say our decisions are guided purely by hopes for a future buyout would make a totally uncommercial project like the pizza watch make no sense. None of the groups would ever do a resource heavy, unscalable project like that. We’re enjoying being indie and getting to do fun things for the hell of it. We’re enjoying the ride and doing things our way. If we do end up in that position, we’ll have taken the longest route to Rome. Which will be a cool story. - Andrew

Sorry, need to be honest and dont want to shit over anyone but need to be truthful here - regarding AET, loved the 3 as individuals, but together i dont think it worked - all talking over each other, seemed to fight for their vocal to be heard - giggling like school boys trying to make instantaneous content.... ended up like an advanced "Top Gear" where the topical content was lost by 3 presenters fighting to make their mark... the jump suits were god awful and devalued the channel imo.... not surprised it ended abruptly and think that was the right call - really glad it hasn't dragged on...... sorry! dont mean to cause a downer because all 3 seem great and love the individual content in their own style....
Better to be loved as individuals and not as a group than the other way around I suppose - but I hear a lot of the reverse, too. You really can't please everyone, eh. Thanks for watching - Andrew

British watchmaking. unfortunately I feel as I’ve made the point many times the real issue here is Germany and they have it spot on.
Germany, Japan and dark horse China are on the march - but the British have something unique to bring, and should not be written off - though a verticalised 'British Made' should not necessarily be the goal in my view.
@AndrewMcUtchen Agree. Wherever it's comes from then providing it's ethically made, country of origin would not stop me buying a good product

I met him many years ago at Time&Tide in Melbourne, I walked in Just to buy a Magazine and he happened to just walk in, said hi had a chat, and I walked out thinking what a nice Gentleman.
