- The Greater Toronto Area (GTA) was hit with severe thunderstorm Tuesday morning, which caused major flooding in many areas and led to several water rescues by the Toronto fire department.
Power was also knocked out to over 167,000 Toronto Hydro customers, but power was slowly being restored by Tuesday evening, Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow said.
“The TTC (Toronto Transit Commission) - especially in the Union Station area - experienced flooding but most of the stations and the buses all of that is operating,” said Chow.
Toronto City Manager Paul Johnson said a number of road closures remain in place as of early Tuesday evening, and that clean-up from the storm could take several hours leaving several roadways closed until they are cleared.
Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) reported that Hwy 410 Southbound ramp to Hwy 401 was experiencing “extensive flooding.”

Thankfully that rain water tax wasn't implemented
Only because it is getting closer to a municipal election.
Yet
No tax increase, now no money for infrastructure improvements. Happy?
the DVP floods every time theres a significant amount of rain. why dont they just build better guards??
we are too poor and doomed lol we are paying 4-5k to reside refugees that come to Canada that has not contributed to our economic at all.
😅😂. Stop making sense. That’s not how we do things around here.
How about instead of spending tax money on renaming streets you spend it on your old infrastructure
And that's what happens when a city takes all of it's green space and develops it. No open ground to absorb moisture.
NO! Its the fault of home owners who have front driveways they said!
@@dealman3312 they said they said they said bro grass asorbs water if u have tons of buildings were will the water go is it just magically supposed to disappear

Being facetious
They always like to blame other things when the reality is this has been going on for hundreds of years.
Thanks to capitalism for turning what could be green sponge cities into concrete flood-prone, car dependant cities.
I'm sorry, I just don't understand how you could see a river on the road and KEEP GOING! Like, don't these people have any sense? How the hell do you "get caught" in THAT much rain? When it comes half way up the tires, I'm going home or at least parking by the nearest restaurant. How are people DRIVING in these rivers?
They will never fix it so they can use that as distraction
And RAIN TAX Is just her way to suck money
Because tax dollars need to go towards rainbow sidewalks.
No one could have predicted flooding to this extent 🙄
@@TheNiz78 not even Moses 🤣
Oh, I don’t know. I seem to remember hearing a lot about global warming and climate change affecting the weather for quite a while now. Years even so…🤷🏻♀️
@@grovegirlforever maybe we need to pay more climate tax and the rain will go away.
It literally happens all the time.
@grovegirlforever that isnt what caused the bit of rain we got. Are you really that delusional?
Flooding has happened in Toronto for decades and they never fixed it!!
Exactly. People have short term memories. The flooding of lower DVP happens every major rainfall, because of the fact that the DVP is basically just above the river bank, and water has nowhere else to go. And the bottleneck at the bottom of the Don River that forces it to turn right.
Horrible road design. 400 has standing water over small rain.
What about sitting water?🤔🤭
Horrible concrete jungle car-dependent capitalist wet dream city design.
Sponge cities? No way. That's too nice.
I’m sure renaming Dundas Square will help Toronto’s crumbling infrastructure.
Don’t worry about floods, our mayor’s working on Diversity & Inclusion. And reparations.
OMG TORONTO HAS A FLOOD?!?
Call in the army....
Toronto had ZERO leaders and terrible infrastructure.
Even Noah was prepared and planned ahead for the flood…
😅😅😅😅
Unlike the bible crap this was real
I hope no one got stuck in their basements like in New York a few years back
Seeing the severe storm flooding in Toronto underscores the need to be prepared for unexpected disruptions. Hope everyone stays safe and recovers quickly.
For those thinking this is linked to climate change get your head examined. I live in Toronto and instead of putting millions towards bike lanes or renaming streets they should be putting the money towards an out of date infrastructure
They 100% for sure should be updating the outdated infrastructure, but you can’t deny that these storms are coming more fierce and more often so that is, indeed due to climate change/Global warming. They will have no choice but to update when this happens over and over again.
Chow always sounds clueless when it comes to matters related to actually running the city.

Rain tax ? More like Olivia Chow Tax
imagine if this was snow lol
Toronto must collect that rain tax.
God Bless Toronto. Canada 🇨🇦 praying for healing protection and peace for those ppl affected throughout this disaster 💔💔💔💔💔💦
We need 2 things. 1) Better leadership and an actual world stage infrastructure. Both are far off.
Billions spent on Union station & couldnt stop flooding
Chow has no clue what she is doing.
Anyone still without power? Mine has been off most of the day. 😢
Seriously, the DVP has had this flooding issue for DECADES. Why is it even at grade level with the river? They should be investing in the infrastructure, instead of greenlighting so many condos, which aren't contributing to improving the infrastructure - only straining it.
ICYMI: Patience is in short supply
So, poor explanation. Can not predict whether.....very poor management....

Hours to clean up? You realize in western Canada where there's not tow truck drivers that would take a week to clean up?
thank you john tory, didnt want to raise our taxes, but wanted to stay popular, like dougie
How are the work conditions looking for tomorrow in the downtown harbour front area?
Who's the white-splainer?
the new portlands water management system would protect us from this they said
Several hours.... thats nothing to worry about... most places take days

Don't worry, those are Chinese drivers, and everyone knows they're the best drivers in the world.
Spent billions remaking Don river estuary..couldnt improve flooding?

I understand ppl r p.o.ed , yet it happens all over the world ( even places w no $ for repair , let alone hope of remedies ) flooding is a common problem depending on the sitch & circumstances.

Birds of a feather
2 hours after the storm, water from upstream, came down steam to Oak marina. Boats pushed into other boats. Children stranded on lake training on.sail boats. Needed rescue!
They didn't see the weather report
Of course they don't mention that eh!
Did you read my notes. It's 2 hours after the rains stopped and sun is out, that the water upstream, finally made its way down.
Trudeau will have to raise carbon taxes to fix this.

maybe don't build a highway in a valley
Resign !!

wow, a more useless mayor than calgarys, bettlejuice. Thats impressive
Poilievre’s anti-environment record also includes voting “yea” for legislation designed to weaken environmental safeguards on new industrial projects and accelerate expansion of the oil and gas industry, Canada’s largest source of greenhouse gas emissions.
Are you aware that canada is responsible for less than 2 percent of global emissions? And china is building coal power plants by the dozen... give your head a shake.
Keep the federal politics out of a municipal problem
So? No relation to a heavy rain event in toronto...maybe instead of wasting billions on pointless climate nonsense instead bring infrastructure up to date.
