You can get it when you FREE! subscribe to sketchucation.com. Draw a line along blue axis, select it and draw, helix along curve. There is no pitch, so you have calculate like 150mm (line) / 5 laps = pitch 30mm. And sections per lap 96 in this case.
This technique allows you to make flat crest and root for the thread. Also, the thread is solid, no holes. On this video closely imitating coarse M24. M24 really has a little bit different dimensions and the root is double width of the crest and usually rounded. Anyway for some 3D printing projects not so necessary.
You need only the helix plug-in. The Solid Inspector & the CleanUp3 plug-ins make things easier when drawing more than the just the thread. I drew the outer thread "by hand" because the Boolean plugin crashed.
Draw a shank with some degree angle to the end of the bolt and you get a chamfer for the nut part.
The model was 3D printed nicely on Reprap Prusa i3 FDM printer.

I don't have to keep measuring as I build because it's all on the drawing.
I did hear the faint sound of a 3D printer in the background but, then again, I've grown to like that sound since I bought my own ! :)
At sections, put 100. On most 3D printers it matches with the way the motors run and gives a much smoother finish than any number under 100 to 90 and any number above 100 to 110 (anything above that is unnecessary in any circles you'll make the slicer won't perform any better on any machine that's not equipped with state of the art motors and software).
I'm just missing the helix tool in the new online version but nice stuff man, really interesting and smart way of doing it
Thank you ! I found a easier way for thread. After scaling screw you can easily reverse with subtract command which in solid tolls.

This Helix plugin, where can I find it? It's not available at extension warehouse.

Thanks for the tutorial. My helix is not intersecting with the cylinder. When I scale the helix, it just passes through the cylinder. sides of both are set to 100. I stretch/size to "end point in group". anything I could be missing?
Side count on cylinder and helix have to be same. Perhaps you have set the radius 100, not the side count? If you are working on very small scale, strange things can happen sometimes. Then you have to do the scale up for a moment. Have you tested first with basic circle 24 sections with helix 24 sections?
Hi! Great tutorial, many thanks. But why do you do "copy and paste in place"?
With paste in place the object gets copied to exactly correct (same) place I want to. If I do Ctrl +V (just copy) the copy is grabbed outside the object and I feel clumsy to put it to the correct place.

I'm so frustrated for I can't create this screw in the explained way.
That's what I'm doing: I create the first helix (24 parts), make a group, copy it in place, rotate it (in my case by 50 deg), explode all and re-group it again, copy this second group in place again, rotate it for 180 deg. Then I create the circle (24 parts and same radius as the helix) and extrude this circle, next I'm exploding the first helix-group and then exploding the second helix-group without doing anything other than pressing the "S"-Key for scale. I see, that both lines from the second exploded helix-group are highlighted. If I try to scale now, only one of the spirals from this both is scaled. The other turns to black and keeps standing outside of my "screw". I watched this video for times and times but I can't figure out, where my mistake is. The only difference in my work is, that I don't use the "Helix-Addon" but I create the helix "by hand" as it is shown in another tutorial (NOT in the way to create a curve and lift it up and stick it together with a reverse copy).
Is anybody here who can help me? Sorry for my english is not so good - its quite 50 years ago as I learned in school ;-)
Hi! 50 degrees does not fit with 24 part helix. Try first 24 & 45 degrees and see. Then probably you can find some other dimensions like 24 parts with 60 degrees.
...and if you make a 72 sides helix with a 72 sides or parts circle, you can make your 50 degrees turn.
It works! Thank you so much - you saved my day. I'd not recognized, that there's a relation between the count of parts of the circle/helix an the rotation angle.

Amazing tutorial. Can you be hired for making a prototype?? please point to website or email for contact. We need a screw with outer thread. On the srew's top there would be a simple circle shaped head.
Probably. I have added email address now to the channel's About section (protected with CAPTCHA from visitors,robots.). A circle shaped head can mean a few different things...

Don't let your mind fool you that something is painful. Perhaps these days there is some plugins to make things faster. Or download parts, stls already done and edit them. Anyway this workflow teaches some art, movements. which might help with some other ideas.

It still took me hours, I have a thread, but can't add a shank to it for some reason, just won't create a surface to extrude, only a circle, I don't know why....
So bloody frustrating....

@@shaneclee5512 I'm not sure what is your problem, but doing it in a small scale can make problems in sketchup. Make 100 times bigger than original and scale it down in some other software. Or perhaps you did not explode helix groups?

You start the tutorial in the middle of making a thread, makes no sense if you are making tutorial videos, start from scratch!
I don't understand what you mean from scratch? What can be more from scratch than starting with the pitch and the radius?
