Insight into the SD Formatter tool from a software engineer (pre-note: mostly speculation, but I've saved an iPhone sort of this way before...) SD Cards use NAND flash for storage, each bit can basically only be written to 10,000 times before it goes bad (give or take...) Most disk formatting utilities don't care about the disk type but just treat it as a disk, with NAND flash this can corrupt the bad blocks table that the device uses to keep track of which blocks are no longer good for writing to. This doesn't really effect your capability to write, when it attempts to write and fails it notes that block to the table and tries another, but it will slow down write performance. I'm speculating that the SD formatter does something I did to an iPhone 3G that I nearly bricked (was installing Android on it with some fancy bootrom hackery), which is after formatting attempt to inflate a nil file to the entire disk, basically trying to write to each block and re-building the bad block table. Once the bad block table is set, nothing will attempt to write to those blocks, and your write speed increases. Again, pure speculation, but I'd put $20 on it
I got the omnibus f4 with data flash chip, this will be my first go at Blackbox. Glad to know I can turn it on when I want it and off when I don't. I'm only interested in using it if I have issues with tuning. Thanks for this series.

Hey joshua. I LOVE this playlist. These videos teach me more than any other channel i watch. I have been having some trouble with my new build. Its a martain 250 frame, BF F3 FC, spedix es30a running dshot600, emax rs2205s 2300kv motors, unify pro v2 and foxeer arrow v3. The quad has never been crashed and only flew 15-20 times. This quad flies great but been having a wobble issue at like 1340-1440 throttle range. I have a BlackBox log with an HD video and i went through it and from what i knoe about ready BB logs, i think it might be P Term Oscillations. I see (when i get the issue) ,(the quad wobbles) in the throttle range theres alot of P term occnn then goes away when i go above 1440 throttle. During forward flight or even just a slow throttle climb you can see the quadcopter start to wobble (cant determie what axis but looks like a low P term wobble) if i fly forward and keep the trottle around 1340-1440 you can see a steady wobble. Ive tried increasing my ps to around 90. Then i get alot of prop wash occilations. Tried lowereing Ps to 30-40 and the wobbles are so much worse. Also tried my I gains and D gains. But that doesnt make a difference. Even TPA at .30 at 1350. Still the same. FC and Motors are soft mounted. Tried all the filters on and off with pt1. Tried different props.. Using hq 5x4x3 and cyclone 5045, 5046. I have a video and log file and was wondering if maybe you can post a video of how to fix this issue. Or even help me out by taking a look at the log. I can send you the log and video it goes with. Alot of people have been experiencing the same issue on Betaflight 3.2. Also i could donate to your channel an or pay for whatever services you require. Please help.. thanks steve.

As soon as you were talking speed on Open log I was wondering when you were gonna say Nyquist limit. BOOM 5:03 there it was. Should be a drinking game for your videos.
Yeah. That's the limitation. With the noise peak on a mini quad around 300-500 Hz, sampling below 1 kHz causes important data to fall above the Nyquist Limit. By the same token, there is almost no meaningful energy above about 500 Hz, so sampling faster doesn't do much, unless you're a dev who really cares about frequencies above 1 kHz for some reason.

This formatting tool just saved my bacon, i had tried every sd i own getting the same error (NO FAT MBR PARTIONS), i had even tried some other third party format programs with no success, until now.
Do you have any idea why putting a buzzer on a sp racing f3 board would kill it? It was working fine, I soldered a buzzer on then powered up the quad with a smoke stopper like I always do when I make a change and it's dead. No leds, no response to PC. I confirmed 5v on the rail.
Joshua Bardwell it was a quick in and out solder job. Pads were already tinned. Obviously something happened to it, I just have no idea what. I had to slap in an old naze 6 for now. Would you recommend 3.0.1 on the naze?
If you put 3.0.1 on a Naze, you'll need to keep to about 2k/1k gyro/PID loop rate, or maybe 1k/1k, but it will still fly well. I only guessed the soldering job because I can't imagine what else would have done it. Even if the buzzer was defective somehow, all it should have done is burn out the GPIO pin on the MCU, not kill the entire board.
Joshua Bardwell thanks for the help. I guess it's possible a speck of solder flew off the iron and onto the fc and shorted something. Sometimes if the tip is dry it will spit a little when I first put the solder onto it. 7% CPU load at 1.6k/1.6k so I guess that will be fine. Jumps to 100% at 2k lol
Yeah, it's just about useless to use onboard data flash. Best thing it's useful for is first tune by feel best u can, then on your last pack, turn on logging and do all the normal maneuvers that bring out useful data. Go home and download the data, make any changes u feel it needs, rinse and repeat. I was unlucky with race flight too. Could never get fast downloads when everyone else claimed they could.
Damn! I wish I watched this the other week. I've been struggling with my Open Log device not recording enough data. I'm running F4 Demo Soul at 8k/8k, so no chance of me using it, in fact none of my quads run slow enough for it. So annoying when I spent a while flashing 3 of them with the logging firmware over ftdi cable.
I tried logging at 8k and then again at 4k. Didn't see much differance in the logs, both were missing some data and weren't able to create the gyro lines, just lots of the little squares. I'll give 1k a go and let you know. Such a shame if open log doesn't work anymore. I don't log all my flights, just when I tune or have an issue, so removing the device for space and weight was great for me.
Hey Joshua, Ive been trying to tune filters and I keep getting extreme oscillations after a minute of flight and hot motors thereafter, I have some blackbox data, any way you could peek and give a suggestion??? Really lost
Hey Joshua it is hard you have alot of videos with blackbox. I just have a simple question related to motors and Max motor noise. I have enabled PT1 and when I look at the analyzer it only goes up to 125khz unlike 4000 like before. My question being, reading the max engine noise, I can read motor 1,2,3, and 4 looks the highest and I can read the first digit and not the rest. What is the average Max motor noise you mostly see, and do bent or out of balance props effect the noise? Obviously.. I check the 4 motors in betaflight with the props off and each motor in the Accel only go to .01 maybe .02 on one motor. So I am leaning towards a prop issue. Thanks for your patience. On the BF 'Configuration' page I see two features: 'BLACKBOX' and also 'SDCARD'. Not sure what is the difference between both? I am flying an Omnibus F3 AIO with SD card slot.
Blackbox is whether it does blackbox logging at all. SDCard is whether it acknowledges the existence of a built-in SD card reader. If you use dataflash chip or serial logger, you would have blackbox on but sdcard off.
Sorry, Joshua...might be time for yet another update to this. Seems a few things have changed and I'm not exactly sure how to turn Blackbox on...my FC (Kakute F7 AIO) is BB capable but that option is no longer in the configuration tab. Is it automatic now with an SD card installed?

Hi Joshua Bardwell I have issues with my new whoop flipping out of full throttle. So trying to setup black box to help identity. I have Crazybee F4 v3(spi rx) & don’t have ‘onboard’ int the drop down menu. Only none or serial. Spent ages trying to figure this out and no luck Any help would be appreciated!
Update: Please make sure you insert the SD card in the correct. Apparently, you can insert the card ride side up and up side down. The entire time i had the SD card with the SD card logo facing up, when i inserted the Card upside down; that fixed my issue. if you are experiencing FATAL ERROR REBOOT check that the SD cards orientation. i have the hobbywing stack and wish that there was a way to know that you are inserting the card in the wrong way
I am trying to check failsafePhase for my quad, but it always shows as "IDLE" - even when I activate Failsafe in a test setting. Same with rcSignalreceived - no value shows up in my log. Is there a function to activate these? Other values are being recorded correctly.
That's what I thought - but I checked and strangely, none of my two quads records failsafe. I must be doing something wrong, but right now I have no idea where to look next. I would appreciate any idea.
Is it possible to only record Gyro/accelerometer data on the dataflash chip? I've got my quad tuned, and really only want to use the blackbox data for video stabilization, but the chip fills up after only a few short flights, since it's only 8mb.
Hi Joshua , I try to use the blackbox. I record on memory of 16mb on fc and I can record 2 Lipo at 1kHz and are 10 mb. Late when plug the fc and dowloads the file ... I found only 3 min of log and no 2 file or 6 min of log from 2 Lipo of fly. Do you know where is the second log?
Tried to configure blackbox via aux channel from the modes tab but it continues to start recording as soon as i arm the quadcopter.Is there a video that shows how can i do it?Thank you in advance!
I'm not sure what the issue is, sorry. If the mode is going yellow and then grey when enabled and disabled, then it should not be recording when th emode is disabled.
There is no more Blackbox option in the Configuration tab. Just go to the Blackbox tab and select the device to log to. Since the SPRacingF3 doesn't have a built-in blackbox device, you must select Serial Port and use an OpenLog device.
@Joshua Bardwell: I have SP Racing F3 (the one with barometer and magnetometer) and it does have 8 MB dataflash and I am using it. However, there are only 1 kHz and 500 Hz options for sampling rate and I'd like to lower it to about 100 Hz for recording the sticks. I was looking for CLI command to increase the sampling divider but didn't find any :-/ BTW, the dataflash on my FC did't work in the first because PB12 and PB13 pins of the STM32F3 were shorted (they were shorted at the factory because the dataflash was not found when I connected the FC to Betaflight before soldering). After removing the short the dataflash started working.
Hey great video as always..i have the bff3 board... how do you have it setup.. i have blackbox and sdcard checked in config. Tab. Uart1 in ports is on blackbox logging. ( i dont know if you need to turn blackbox logging on in on a uart in ports tab). i have blackbox on a switch in motors tab. (Or does it automatically start loggi g when armed) also im using 1khz 13% in blackbox tab. And a 16gb lexar class 10 sdcard.. the sdcard icon is grey and there is no yellow bar saying how much is used...am i missing something.. thanks

Josh, it seems Blackbox uses a .bfl file extension but my files are being saved as .bbl so the BB Viewer is unable to open it. This is from a Kakute F4 AIO. Is it possible to change the format in which the file is saved. I tried changing the extension by renaming it but that didn't work. Thanks for your time...
I can only guess that 3.2 has changed the format again but the new viewer is not out yet. Welcome to the world of Alpha testing. Try downloading the most recent viewer from the github page, and install it using Developer Mode.

BF can only access 4 gig at a time. But that would be LITERALLY weeks of logging all in a row. So basically BF will fill up the card, but no single flight can take more than 4 gig of space, but that's impossible anyway so don't worry about it.
I have question, not related to this specific topic though. I'm building my first quapcopter and I'm done building and programming but something is not right. When I arm the motors the start spinning and as I move the throttle up and they start to spin faster the turn off, if the move the throttle back down they start again. Any idea what I'm doing wrong. FC is a F3 spracing and I'm using a flysky i6 with fs-ia6 receiver. All the controllers function properly on betaflight. Thanks in advance.
Hi Joshua, I had seen that video already. What is happening to me is with the props on and on the grown ready to take off. I arm the quad and as I begin to throttle up then motors stop and when I throttle back down the start again. My arm switch is on Ch5 so its not mixed up with the throttle.
As this seems to be the start of a blackbox series, maybe how to configure blackbox for kiss (for the kiss lovers). Or some kiss PID Tuning vid. Or maybe a review of the Kiss AIO v1, which is out since yesterday (if flyduino is kind enough to send you one for free hehe). I guess this might be already planned but it would be great to see how excess D, excess P, too low P, too low D etc. looks like in bb or in the cam footage, but in a summed up way.

I tried to get my BetaflightF3 Blackbox to run, but the fc didn’t recognize the sd-card (status SD card: None inserted). Tried with three different sd-cards and format them with SDFormatter, reflashed Betaflight and changed sdcard_dma (whatever that is for...) but none of that helped. Is that a typical error? Do you have an idea what could cause that failure or anything else I could try? PS: Apart from that I am very pleased with the BetaflightF3 and no interferences are caused by the onboard pdb. I think you need to have as well :D
In case anyone else is sourching for the solution: What helped for me was to format the sdcard with the standard windows formatter without the "fast formatting" feature. The sdcard is still not recognized in the blackbox tab but the board create logfiles.
I love, love, love how knowledgeable you are in this hobby, you save us all a lot of time! I noticed you've mentioned that you needed chrome in a few videos, for blackbox. There is an alternative that I use, its a browser based on chromium called torch. It can run chrome apps, without all the tracking and such from google. www.torchbrowser.com/ I'm sure there are others but this one runs nicely on my netbook, which I use in the field.
Hi Joshua. I bought the betaflight f3, and have blackbox turned on, and so card selected. The problem is it tells me that it's not recognizing the sd card. Then I erased the card and formatted it to exfat. It's a 64gb newer card. I've tried everything I can think of. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?
So I just tried a smaller 16 gb card and that worked. But the 64gb class 10 lexar will not. Don't know why, cause that's the best card I have. $100.00 card won't work, $20.00 cards perfect. Same with the two for the qx7.

Is the Chrome app still the best way to view blackbox?

Onboard flash would be vastly more useful if there was an easy way to erase the dataflash in the field. Either with a flight mode or with BF OSD.

You need to raise your logging rate. That's why your log only goes up to 125 Hz. Increase the logging rate in the Blackbox tab.

The BetaFight - Blackbox Explorer will only run on Chrome OS how are you able to get it to run on a Windows Machine?
The chrome version is retired. There is a native version for windows Mac and Linux.

I only have 32G SDcards, but i am getting an Fatal Error message. does the size of the SD card matter?
Update: Please make sure you insert the SD card in the correct. Apparently, you can insert the card ride side up and up side down. The entire time i had the SD card with the SD card logo facing up, when i inserted the Card upside down; that fixed my issue. if you are experiencing FATAL ERROR REBOOT check that the SD cards orientation. i have the hobbywing stack and wish that there was a way to know that you are inserting the card in the wrong way
I am trying to check failsafePhase for my quad, but it always shows as "IDLE" - even when I activate Failsafe in a test setting. Same with rcSignalreceived - no value shows up in my log. Is there a function to activate these? Other values are being recorded correctly.
You shouldn't have to do anything to have these values reflected correctly.
That's what I thought - but I checked and strangely, none of my two quads records failsafe. I must be doing something wrong, but right now I have no idea where to look next. I would appreciate any idea.

Is it possible to only record Gyro/accelerometer data on the dataflash chip? I've got my quad tuned, and really only want to use the blackbox data for video stabilization, but the chip fills up after only a few short flights, since it's only 8mb.
BF 4.3 will have the ability to customize what is logged but not BF 4.2.

Hi Joshua , I try to use the blackbox. I record on memory of 16mb on fc and I can record 2 Lipo at 1kHz and are 10 mb. Late when plug the fc and dowloads the file ... I found only 3 min of log and no 2 file or 6 min of log from 2 Lipo of fly. Do you know where is the second log?
+Adriano Gianni all the logs are in the same file when you use the dataflash chip. Use the pull down menu in the upper right to select.
Can I make a silly question? What does 101 mean?
In college courses, Freshman level courses are typically numbered 1XX, so they would go 101, 102, 103, etc. Sophomore level would be 201, 202, etc.

No. It can work with dataflash chip on board the FC also.
I cannot seem to turn on blackbox in betaflight 10.4. It's not even on my screen in configuration tab under features. Any ideas?
Blackbox feature was removed a long time back. Just select the logging device in the Blackbox tab.

Does the mode go green (CF) or yellow (BF) in the Modes tab when you flip the switch? Does the channel marker go into the area between the sliders?
Yes it goes yellow and the channel marker goes into the area.I run the betaflight f4 board from bangood with betaflight 3.1.6 and a spektrum dx8 .
I'm not sure what the issue is, sorry. If the mode is going yellow and then grey when enabled and disabled, then it should not be recording when th emode is disabled.
Uuugghh, help, my spracing f3 FC doesn't have the blackbox option in configruation, anyone know how to turn it on?
There is no more Blackbox option in the Configuration tab. Just go to the Blackbox tab and select the device to log to. Since the SPRacingF3 doesn't have a built-in blackbox device, you must select Serial Port and use an OpenLog device.

@Joshua Bardwell: I have SP Racing F3 (the one with barometer and magnetometer) and it does have 8 MB dataflash and I am using it. However, there are only 1 kHz and 500 Hz options for sampling rate and I'd like to lower it to about 100 Hz for recording the sticks. I was looking for CLI command to increase the sampling divider but didn't find any :-/ BTW, the dataflash on my FC did't work in the first because PB12 and PB13 pins of the STM32F3 were shorted (they were shorted at the factory because the dataflash was not found when I connected the FC to Betaflight before soldering). After removing the short the dataflash started working.
Hey great video as always..i have the bff3 board... how do you have it setup.. i have blackbox and sdcard checked in config. Tab. Uart1 in ports is on blackbox logging. ( i dont know if you need to turn blackbox logging on in on a uart in ports tab). i have blackbox on a switch in motors tab. (Or does it automatically start loggi g when armed) also im using 1khz 13% in blackbox tab. And a 16gb lexar class 10 sdcard.. the sdcard icon is grey and there is no yellow bar saying how much is used...am i missing something.. thanks
On 3.1.7 you have to enable feature sdcard in the Configuration tab.

Josh, it seems Blackbox uses a .bfl file extension but my files are being saved as .bbl so the BB Viewer is unable to open it. This is from a Kakute F4 AIO. Is it possible to change the format in which the file is saved. I tried changing the extension by renaming it but that didn't work.

I can only guess that 3.2 has changed the format again but the new viewer is not out yet. Welcome to the world of Alpha testing. Try downloading the most recent viewer from the github page, and install it using Developer Mode.

Yes. They got rid of the option to disable it in the config tab.
You need to go to the Blackbox tab and ensure SD card is selected as your Blackbox device.
Why does mine say only 4gigs available? 16g card
BF can only access 4 gig at a time. But that would be LITERALLY weeks of logging all in a row. So basically BF will fill up the card, but no single flight can take more than 4 gig of space, but that's impossible anyway so don't worry about it.

I have question, not related to this specific topic though. I'm building my first quapcopter and I'm done building and programming but something is not right. When I arm the motors the start spinning and as I move the throttle up and they start to spin faster the turn off, if the move the throttle back down they start again. Any idea what I'm doing wrong. FC is a F3 spracing and I'm using a flysky i6 with fs-ia6 receiver. All the controllers function properly on betaflight. Thanks in advance.

Hi Joshua, I had seen that video already. What is happening to me is with the props on and on the grown ready to take off. I arm the quad and as I begin to throttle up then motors stop and when I throttle back down the start again. My arm switch is on Ch5 so its not mixed up with the throttle.

As this seems to be the start of a blackbox series, maybe how to configure blackbox for kiss (for the kiss lovers). Or some kiss PID Tuning vid. Or maybe a review of the Kiss AIO v1, which is out since yesterday (if flyduino is kind enough to send you one for free hehe). I guess this might be already planned but it would be great to see how excess D, excess P, too low P, too low D etc. looks like in bb or in the cam footage, but in a summed up way.

I tried to get my BetaflightF3 Blackbox to run, but the fc didn’t recognize the sd-card (status SD card: None inserted). Tried with three different sd-cards and format them with SDFormatter, reflashed Betaflight and changed sdcard_dma (whatever that is for...) but none of that helped. Is that a typical error? Do you have an idea what could cause that failure or anything else I could try?
PS: Apart from that I am very pleased with the BetaflightF3 and no interferences are caused by the onboard pdb. I think you need to have as well :D
+ModellflugFlo are you using dshot? Some boards can't do dshot and SD card at the same time.
Sadly no, still using Oneshot125 because of my good old LittleBee20A.
In case anyone else is sourching for the solution: What helped for me was to format the sdcard with the standard windows formatter without the "fast formatting" feature. The sdcard is still not recognized in the blackbox tab but the board create logfiles.

Tried that before without success... but it works now (kind of) and I will record my first blackbox log tomorrow :D

I noticed you've mentioned that you needed chrome in a few videos, for blackbox. There is an alternative that I use, its a browser based on chromium called torch. It can run chrome apps, without all the tracking and such from google. www.torchbrowser.com/

Hi Joshua. I bought the betaflight f3, and have blackbox turned on, and so card selected. The problem is it tells me that it's not recognizing the sd card. Then I erased the card and formatted it to exfat. It's a 64gb newer card. I've tried everything I can think of. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?
So I just tried a smaller 16 gb card and that worked. But the 64gb class 10 lexar will not. Don't know why, cause that's the best card I have. $100.00 card won't work, $20.00 cards perfect. Same with the two for the qx7.
Cards that are too big can't be read by the FAT library used in Betaflight. I think 16 Gig is the max it supports.
