Leonidas Kavakos and Gautier Capucon are wonderful musicians. The fact that Yuja Wang is performing in some sort of a bathing suit doesn´t disturb me at all, she is a wonderful pianist and a wonderful musician, together with these gentlemen she makes this music really come through.

Great musicians contributing their best to this exquisite piece. They are all well suited to play together, great conversations among them. Lovely!

Wonderful performance. I'm sure Yuja's outfits are designer made & come at a price($) so they are just size fit & she has the body to wear them whether it is liked or not. She has previously said she does not understand what the fuss is about. Anyway it is a joy watching her play.

Of course she understands what the fuss is about. She intentionally creates the fuss by focusing attention on her next-to-naked body. Would she attend a church service or a funeral dressed like that? On second thought she probably would.

The Largo from this we read on wiki (I quote) ... "In 1975, after Shostakovich's death, this movement was played at his public funeral service held in the Grand Hall" as mourners passed his coffin. end of quote.

Did Yuja Wang come straight to the concert from swimming practise or something??

amazing piece of music, especially the 4th movement, and excellent performance. How does she turn the pages in the piano score? It's on a tablet isnt't it? do they change automatically?

The fact that Miss Wang chooses to delight us with her wonderful piano virtuosity in such minuscule attire only shows the wonderful way to manifest and enhance the music of the great composers. That will make Betty Boop jealous
Keep it up Miss Yuji; you have a big follower fan base.

Yuja Wang was distracting here. It's not just the outfit, although that's part of it. Her whole persona including the outfit works if she's the star attraction, but in this context both her presence and piano playing stands out too much. She wasn't part of the ensemble.

They don't really listen to each other. No give-and-take. Kagan, Gutman, Richter, Kogan, Rostropovich, Gilels, or Oistrakh, Sádlo Shostakovich himself are so much preferred, just to name a few off the top of my head.

I have to say that--given who is playing--I find this rather disappointing. The scherzo is fabulous. The opening fugue is far too slow (and it isn't even together) and the pianissississimo at the beginning is a mere a show effect (I admit: very hard to do indeed but entirely pointless). The third movement is too slow and unrhythmic (rubato works only if a discernible rhythm has first been established) and fails to impress with its fabulous singing tunes and counterpoint. The last movement again begins too slow and finds its tempo about halfway through. Also: the strings play in a style that is as far away from a Klezmer violinist as imaginable.
This performance is either insufficiently prepared or else there is an effort to "do something with the piece" rather than simply playing what is written (as Shostakovich himself did in the recording he made with David Oistrach--you will find it on youtube).

Absolutely agree. This performance is extremely underwhelming and I was kind of surprised reading all of the comments until I got to yours. The first movement is really rough. This is coming from a music festival, so who knows how much time they had to rehearse together. Probably not as much as they should have.

@@FritzTheCat_1030 Thanks. I generally give all three musicians here high marks but this time they flubbed it. To be fair to the other commenters: This piece is so good that even a mediocre performance can deeply impress people.

no, you needn't. wang is a phenomenal professional musician and deserves respect for her talent. What she chooses to wear has nothing whatsoever to her incredible musicianship and should not in any way affect our perception of her performance. your focus on her outfit or physical appearance is a misogynistic and blatant disregard for her hard work and talent. There's a reason she is regarded as one of the best soloists of her time, and it has nothing to do with what she wears

Everyone seems to comment on YW's concert attire, but the bathing suit she appears to be wearing is wholly inappropriate...there is nothing wrong with having a cetrain degree of modesty...she appears to be modeling herself on Beyonce...it looks ridiculous

How? Why? It doesn't appear to impede her performance in the slightest bit? If anything the male performers are hindered more by their more extensive fabric coverings.
