- A Designated Hitter has never won an MVP in MLB history, but Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani could be the first to do it here in 2024.
Hosts Ryan Finkelstein and Patrick Lyons discuss Ohtani's 2024 NL MVP chances and give their thoughts on what he needs to do to win it.
Ohtani is heading a Triple Crown & 50-40. He's also leading NL OPS, HR, total base hits, Runs, Slugging, (& hitting avg yesterday). Besides, Ohtani's leadoff since the day Betts injured led Dodgers able to continue its comfortable leading status with Ohtani's unbelievable contributions these 2 weeks. Ohtani for last 2 weeks have been making history almost every day. Today he became 1st Dodgers to have more than 200 total base hits before All Star Break in franchise history and the fastest MLB player to have 20+(28)HR & 20 steals this season. Yesterday Ohtani became 1st baseball player to have a HR, more than one BB(2BB), a steal, a triple since 1901.
Guys, I think the narrative could be he is a rehabbing pitcher who is contributing to injury riddled team and leading the league in major stats.
He is on pace to get roughly 50+ home runs which is higher than Dodgers history of 49. Think about it, newly acquired player breaking records of a historic club during a rehab season i.e consecutive rbi streak and possible home run count
50 Hrs and 30sb is very possible with Ohtani. i think he can do it.
Ozuna is about to eclipse Ohtani, minus the base running stats.
This drives me nuts. He’s a DH this year. No one has EVER won mvp as a DH so why should we move the goal post for him. Also he’s on pace for a higher WAR than Ronald Acuna Jr. last year, despite him playing in the field. That stat is utter BS.
It's that stigma from the olden times that DH can't and shouldn't win since they don't contribute on the field and it should be immortalized as such
Imo I think with comparable stats to any fielding positions DH shouldn't win. However, it all comes down to circumstances and with offense and WAR of the NL, Ohtani for sure is in the lead ( If he had Judge numbers I think it would be unanimous consensus that he wins mvp).
Are you stupid? The goalpost didn't move. There's just never been another DH who was MVP worthy.
theres a goal post?.. literally "if" he or someone else put up historic numbers are you suggesting a DH can't win?
@@Mellowyellow8888 What is historic about it? There have been plenty of DH that have put up similar stat lines to Shohei this year and not a single one sniffed their league’s WAR leaders.
@@TheHotMafia Name one
Whoever you like, you have to ask yourself would you trade them even up for ohtani? The answer is yes
