Lyrics:
I believe that you heard your master sing
When I was sick in bed
I suppose that he told you everything
That I keep locked away in my head
Your master took you travelling
Well at least that's what you said
And now do you come back to bring
Your prisoner wine and bread
You met him at some temple
Where they take your clothes at the door
He was just a numberless man in a chair
Who'd just come back from the war
And you wrap up his tired face in your hair
And he hands you the apple core
Then he touches your lips now so suddenly bare
Of all the kisses we put on some time before
And he gave you a German Shepherd to walk
With a collar of leather and nails
And he never once made you explain or talk
About all of the little details
Such as who had a word and who had a rock
And who had you through the mails
Now your love is a secret all over the block
And it never stops not even when your master fails
And he took you up in his aeroplane
Which he flew without any hands
And you cruised above the ribbons of rain
That drove the crowd from the stands
Then he killed the lights in a lonely lane
And an ape with angel glands
Erased the final wisps of pain
With the music of rubber bands
And now I hear your master sing
You kneel for him to come
His body is a golden string
That your body is hanging from
His body is a golden string
My body has growin' numb
Oh now you hear your master sing
Your shirt is all undone
And will you kneel beside this bed
That we polished so long ago
Before your master chose instead
To make my bed of snow?
Your eyes are wild and your knuckles are red
And you're speaking far too low
No I can't make out what your master said
Before he made you go
Now I think you're playing far too rough
For a lady who's been to the moon;
I've lain by this window long enough
To get used to an empty room
And your love is some dust in an old man's cough
Who is tapping his foot to a tune
And your thighs are a ruin, you want too much
Let's say you came back some time too soon
Now I loved your master perfectly
I taught him all that he knew
He was starving in some deep mystery
Like a man who is sure what is true
And I sent you to him with my guarantee
I could teach him something new
And I taught him how you would long for me
No matter what he said no matter what you'd do
Now I believe that you heard your master sing
While I was sick in bed
I'm sure that he told you everything
I must keep locked away in my head
Your master took you travelling
Well at least that's what you said
And now do you come back to bring
Your prisoner wine and bread - Hudba
"He was starving in some deep mystery, like a man who is sure what is true"
might be the most poetic thing I've ever heard in a song.
He didn't think of himself as a songwriter. We was a poet that that put his poetry to music
I don't get it, am I too young? I'm like 16.
This whole album is magic
'Songs of Love and Hate' is great too!
True
@@tom-ht3ju Various Positions is also beautiful 🎼🎻🕊️
@@patrickhiggins6726 so true!! so is New Skin for an old ceremony
Another incredible recording is Montreux Casino July 1985. 3h20mn!!! With 3 encores ! The rendition of Lover, lover, lover is simply awesome. Not sure if it's a bootleg or not, but the quality of the sound is brilliant 🎼🎻🕊️
Its fantastic, the whole album, I remember buying it so long ago in my youth. Like Dylans lyrics, I dont always understand the meaning, certainly didnt all those years ago, but as a lover of poetry it really doesnt matter does it. The delivery of this song, and the stranger song, are both superb. Many many years ago I had a girlfriend in Montreal, she used to play some Cohen stuff on her guitar...it brings back a lot of memories, she sadly passed away in her 50's of breast cancer, and I still remember the cohen songs in her memory 😣
Cohen and Dylan are probably the greatest songwriters of all time
..'your love is the dust in an old man's cuff, who is tapping his foot to a tune.' This is high poetry by any standard.
Apparently it is "your love is some dust in an old man's cough..." but I also always thought he said "cuff". Difficult to decide but absolutely brilliant of course in either case.
@@larsandersen393 The lyric sheet says CUFF -
Whether or not it's cuff, it sounds great
@@dominikszumski3206 I always thought it was cup, as in a begging cup.
When I started getting into Vinyl about 5 years back, my grandfather had long rid himself of every record in his collection--or so he thought. About 6 months in, he was in his garage and he found his copy of this album. So he gave it to me. I never listened it to much, and it didn't sound too good on my Crosley. But in recent years, long after his death nearly three full years back, I've started to listen to LP's again instead of just 78s, and on a much better machine. I had always remembered this unforgettable melody. I think of my grandpa now when Leonard Cohen comes up. This albume is indeed, magic.
Again and again L.Cohen did it in a way no other artists could do❤❤❤
"he was starving in some deep mystery"
Magic..holy..
A battle against the absurdity of being in Space and time
This song made my neck hurt from nodding in approval too much.
Al Pacino was so talented

This song is like a little gem (once lost) that I found in my bedroom’s chest of drawers.
I love the twist in this song near the end where it is revealed to the woman that the bed ridden man is her Master’s Master. The Holy Trinity.
not quite there
One of Leonards best poems

I was looking for lyrics ,Thanks 🌹🌹🌹
I love how people are just now discovering this masterpiece ... this will change music forever
There is a live performance of Hallelujah by Bon Jovi here and he starts the video by saying that he heard the song, in a bar in the 90's and told a bandmate that they needed to buy the rights to the song and release it. His bandmate told him that he needed to keep up, that the song was Cohen's and it had been released.
it truly is a song from a master
I have no words worthy of this...
I'm at work and this is the only thing saving me thank you
I miss you with all my heart sir.
This is where poetry meets music.
È un'opera d'arte....da brividi....
Tak min elskede Leonard! Du laved så flot en sang over min oplevelse med Gud! Jeg ved at du og Gud vil hjælpe med sandheden om vår plane planet! Din for evig Lila!🙏🤔😊
His style is so unique to him.
Great song very deep and meaningful I gotta get more into Leonard Cohen!
He paints a very contradictory picture why do I love it
because cohen spoke up and made sure the master grasped that you'd long for this no matter what you do
A friend had this album and I was blown away and became an instant fan. He was a genius and his words were so good that they sound biblical. He is said to have written 50 - 60 verses for Hallelujah and used just the best 5 or 6. He's a legend and a saint in Canada.
A great Poetry Leader
Miss you Leonard

For what it's worth I've been playing and listening to that song since he wrote it and I always loved the vision he creates with just a bit of dust in a pant cuff.....I still have cuffs on some old pants.
Does nobody read the description? It says cough in the lyrics there.
Leonard Cohen what a life you lived powerful words
One of his best!
Sounds like the master was one of those 60's gurus:
You met him at some temple

Your bastard took you travelling
Well, at least that's what you said"
Awesome song, album and artist; weird Adam Sandler picture for the cover (?).
Al Pacino
So 'the Master' is heroin as a dark avatar, for instance, of Shiva, right? Or am I reading the song incorrectly? I'm not a Hindu, I'm a Christian, and 'Cohen' means 'priest' in Hebrew, but that's BTW.
I never could spell that
Has this been remastered?
Of course many remastered albums were released in a nice package that doesn't fully convey how pristine or damaged, and how well or poorly damaged, the original master tape was made and kept. Or wasn't.
Wow. What year is this from?
1967
Hint.. my name is George and I currently rehign
When did Adam Sandler start making serious music? 😂
What bullshit! This is NOT the album of which we see the cover. I remember it well, having played it over 100 times, no kidding, as a very young teen. The songs are not in order. Find an older person with the record - and a record player, smirk, and check it out. After all, that stuff is making a big comeback, no? See /hear for yourselves. THINK.
Sorry, but you are wrong.
This is the ORIGINAL album, with the original songs and song order.
i don't know what the fuck you are trying to say but it is not your time anymore old woman
He's thinking of the back cover. Google the album title, images, and scroll till you see the girl in the flames. I was remembering only the back cover, thinking it was the front, till I checked.
I am beginning to understand better that there are many similarly named Leonard Cohen albums.
