The Venezuelan opposition is trying to bring an end to 25 years of rule by the socialist PSUV party -- first by Hugo Chavez, and then by current president Nicolás Maduro. Opposition leader María Corina Machado easily won the opposition primary but then was banned from running in the election by the Maduro government, so the opposition has instead untied behind candidate Edmundo González Urrutia. The opposition has been leading in recent polls but it is unclear, if the opposition does get more votes, whether Maduro would allow such a result and agree to be removed from power.
