- Just a quick graphics comparison I whipped up comparing the PS4 version of the game to the Nintendo Switch version. All in all I think it's a pretty remarkable conversion.

The soundtrack of this game makes me feel so happy and nostalgic for some reason.
I'm so used to listening to the midi soundtrack over a 130 hours that the orchestral version is throwing me off.
It does sound a lot better though
The difference is like night and day yo, I was spazzing out about how much better it is 😩
I love that it gives you the option of going to the classic synthesized music if that's more your jam.
So is the switch version worth getting?

@@jasondp3546 I loved the game so much I double dipped. I play the Switch version for all of the added content, but I fell in love with the game for the setting, artstle, and the bright, crisp visuals. So personally, the PS4/5 is my preferred version. I'm going through it again on my PS5.

Its weird how the switch gets the definitive version. (I'm a switch gamer so I don't particularly mind but) I can see why some PS4 owners feel left out over the extras we have in the Switch version. Like the 3D-2D mode.

Yeah as they say, why would they release a Definitive Version on the same platform? and some of the ps4 owners gets mad about it on how Nintendo gets so much features like:

Gets To play from 3D - 2D
And the other feature like those Tiny Creature thingy I forgot what those thing, but they pretty small and scattered throughout the map
But the DE will be released on PS4 soon so they get to play the DE if they didn’t own a Switch

While obviously a downgrade, I stopped noticing after like the first 15 min of playing. Only when they're side-by-side like this can I truly see how more blurred and everything the switch version is.
The bottom line is: it looks good regardless.
Yeah I played the PS4 version then played the switch version (I have PlayStation my brother ( yes my brother lives with me ) has a switch) it was noticeable for minutes then It just kinda faded back to normal
Legit people can never unsee the massive visual downgrade of the environment! This Dowgraded Version is also now the only version people can buy digitally! And once again, only Pirates can play legitimately and own the game for ever!

I actually played the first 15 minutes or the PlayStation 4 version and post it on my channel saying it was switch gameplay and I still it's only fans coming to it saying the PlayStation 4 version looks better. So what they were saying was PlayStation 4 footage what's better than PlayStation 4 footage. The fact that he couldn't tell the difference me the graphics are not that downgraded.
@@noblacksplz Well, it is just graphically inferior. But it's like buying the Portable and the home console version of the game at once, so you get way more for your money. And while it might be the worst looking console version it is by far the best looking portable version. the 2d mode, extra story quests and orchestral music are just the cherry on the cake

Even the game looking like that on the Switch I never thought that it will run amazing on a console that is less powerful than the PS4, just an amazing port, gotta say it’s one of the best ports for the Nintendo switch I ever seen and really love this franchise 😁
They basically lowered the rez and dropped shadows to the lowest setting! Pause at 2:21 and you will really see it!

Somehow... I prefer the shading and lighting on the switch a lot more? It looks pretty harsh on the ps4 to me, also the model outlines are thicker

Isn´t there a scene right after that in which you can see the view from the mountain? Curious if it looks any good on PS4 at least
And the definitive edition on PS4 and Xbox is just a direct port of the Switch version. So if you want the best graphics, buy the standard PS4 version.
I think while playing, the duller colors will be the main noticeable difference.

To anyone on the fence about reading this its totally worth it just toned down coloring and some blur besides that it's still the better version. Barely noticeable once your a hour in.

The mofos at SquidEnix actually dare to call this the "Definitive" Edition! There is nothing definitive about it! Taking the downgraded Switch version, then do a Bait&Switch to the Original version better looking version!
Graphically in the original, the Foliage/Grass/Environment alone is leaps and bounds above the downgraded Bait&Switch version! Its disgusting!
Yes, the gameplay improvements are nice. But thats worth a Patch, not downgrading the rest of you purchase/product! Not to mention people of the Original game, have to paying full price again! They don't get this version as they should!

If I didn't know the original PS4 version existed, I would be fine with it, but since I have a ps4 and was looking to forward to this, hell no. Going to buy a used original copy instead. Don't even see why they even bothered with the newest S version. If you own a PS4, this is an insult. In gist, don't bring over ports from the Switch.

All they really need to add to vanilla is the fast battle speed, probably the quick menu, gathering and ridding features. The rest are things none fan players won’t really care about. Can be done in an update.
Ugh the PS4 version still looks great. Like a freaking cgi cutscene. Still i'm looking forward to playing the game again on Switch and putting well over 200 hours into it
The game looks killer on PC with 60 FPS not that it really matter's with this kind of game. I am going to play it for the first time on the Switch my self.

Hmm, the polygon count has been reduced on nearly every model, but it still looks decent. A bit surprised no one has mentioned that. You can easily see the difference in the contour on pretty much everything in the game.
Looks like the definitive edition is coming to PS4 too.
And with "definition" directly from Switch, without big changing.
But they say it's a port of switch, which means it's exactly the same, even graphics.
@@spiritomb2126410 From what I have read they said Graphics will be the same with the only difference being resolution. On the Xbox Store it is listed to have 4K Support. Aside from resolution I think we can expect Shadow Quality, Draw Distance, and lighting to be unchanged from the Switch Version.

It's so hard to decide. I've seen conflicting videos. I saw a video that looked like the PS4 looked worse because it was ported from switch. I saw pictures on the internet that looked like the exact opposite of this video. But it just doesn't make sense. How could the game look worse on the more powerful console? I'm so confused.
Both look good, but PS4 version looks significantly better.
Unless it's the definitive edition for ps4 then that's just a port if the switch.
I'm really on the fence about this (for PC that is). I own the original on PC but haven't played it yet, should I just wait and play this? Will the graphics really be toned down slightly even for PC?
The graphics will be slightly toned down in areas like geometry, but the textures should be higher res than Switch. There is a demo out for XI S on PS4. If there’s one on Steam I’d highly recommend checking it out to see how you feel about the graphical changes!
@@JRPGCentral Thanks a lot, that's a good shout. I'll check it out now and see how I feel about it, some people are saying they don't see the different after an hour of playing unless it's a side by side, so I doubt it's going to be an issue in the long run
It's more noticeable than I thought it would be. Colours seem washed out or not as vibrant
This is one of the more demanding games of the console generation. The base PS4 doesn't even run at 1080p, it runs at 900p. Lighting is far more simplified on the Switch. Combined with the lower resolution textures, it just looks like a much duller picture. Don't even compare the Switch version to the PS4 Pro or a PC, the difference is like night and day.
But still, a great game to play at home and on the go regardless of the visuals.

@@noblacksplz nah, this is an exaggeration. Yes, there's pop-in, but it's not "most of the world". And I have no clue what you mean by trees being "jpegs" It's a graphical downgrade, but it's hardly the catastrophe you're trying to make it out to be. Let people decide for themselves. The demo is free and there's dozens of video comparisons online already. No need to lie.
@Alex Peraza Except he isn't lying. Literally the grass as you're walking is constantly respawning and vanishing as you go through. And that 1st area is litered with grass so it isn't just a "few" things. The trees, lamps, that plank you can step on that's on the bridge that connects heliodor, barrels, and the decorations all around heliodor all do the same thing. Lots of things load up when you get really close but as soon as you step like 2 feet away, most detail immediately starts to disappears.
This isn't about lying, it's about whether you have a low enough standard to give Ninty a pass for an ugly looking version.

It's probably using a some sort of dynamic resolution and temporal AA, hence the lack of contrast. Still a great technological feat I would say.
Sabit Ahmed I think it’s rather a setting of wrong color mode from the capture device. The demo, when docked, is one of the most contrast heavy and saturated games my OLED65G8 has ever seen. But it does look like the PS4 has additional light sources.

Graphics dont make Dragon Quest great. After playing so many over the years. Dragon Quest itself makes it great. No matter how it looks

I thought the demo looked great on my tv. and Ive played the ps4 version for 120 hours. But really I want to play the 2D version and I don't think graphics really matter for that version anyway.
Do you have a 4K TV? Because it looks really bad on mine. It's not unusual for sub-1080p content to look bad on my TV, and I normally shrug it off with the Switch, but this one looks like my screen has vaseline smeared on it. I may end up still putting up with it for the orchestral score. I'm very much on the fence about which version to play now that the Switch release is imminent and the PS4 version is cheap. Do I want better sound and the portability option or do I want a crisper image out of my Pro for the 4k TV? Either way I'm making a sacrifice.
damnyousalazar yeah I have a Sony Bravia 4ktv it looks great. Do you wear glasses perhaps? I know I have to get a new prescription every two years.
@@saldanamoreno No, no glasses. The Bravia must have better upscale capabilities than my significantly cheaper Samsung 6300 from three Black Fridays ago. It seems to amplify the softer presentation and blurrier grass that you can you see in this comparison (BOTW's grass also looked like shit on my TV). Also, Eleven's eyes lose a lot of definition when I pan the camera around to face him in open spaces (looks fine in doors, but the camera doesn't seem further away, so I'm wondering if this is due to a dynamic resolution on Switch). I plan on borrowing my brother's PS4 copy of the game before pre-ordering it with my Switch Online voucher too see how I feel about both the resolution and the midi soundtrack recordings IRL.

@@-Pridebycreatons- Yeah, it's kinda gross. I had the same issue with BOTW on my TV too. The grass blades looked very jagged. I played the vast majority of that game on handheld as a result. Which wasn't so bad considering the frame rate performance is better that way.
I'm currently playing the Definitive Edition on PS4, and honestly, other than the darker shadows on the character models, I don't notice any real difference. Really my only (slight) disappointment is the fact that they nix'd the Crossbow side quest.
That is because they ported the Nintendo Switch version and did not readjust to PS4/PC settings. Its too bad considering the original as per video is a lot cleaner and brighter compared to the switch.

I prefer PS4 version, i don't care about the soundtrack after all we can listen to orchestral music here in CZcams so it doesn't matter to me.
Graphic is everything to me, the atmosphere and shadows are everything, the sunlight and how the shadows casted created realism, because i like sunsets and whenever i go out in the real world to see sunset i always remember good Graphic games, this is why i love realistic game graphics.

Honestly, the switch version looks more like an anime. Looks better. The ps4 version looks like a 3D anime which is not how anime is supposed to look. Pretty surprised. Can’t wait to try on my switch

@@bigjawline9235 Yeah, but that still doesn’t mean that it’s supposed to look like his other works, if you look at his dragon quest artwork versus Dragon Ball for example, you can see that while both have similar looking visuals Character design wise, the colors, outlines, shading, and overall tone and style is drastically different, that’s how you can tell that they where going for dragon quest’s artwork visuals as opposed to something similar to anime.

the switch version plays the same, with more content then the original (PC,PS4)
so you're getting more game (new story scenes and quests, 2d mode, past DQ worlds in 2D),
streamlined quicker gameplay in many ways (battle speed increase, faster running around, call horse anywhere, forge equipment anywhere)
japanese or english voices, synthesized or orchestrated soundtrack, or even DQ8 music instead, new costumes for everyone
prob more i've only played the PS4 original version which lacks everything above.

Can anybody confirm if the PC/PS4 version had multitudes of things fade in and out of the screen? Everywhere I go things like trees and rocks just starts appearing as you go along. It's downright ugly on the Switch. It's even worse in heliodor. Some things like lamps barrels, walls disappear and pop in as you go along through it. And mix that with the blurry, pixelated look and you got a downright ugly version.
Also I noticed 1 thing in some comparison videos is that the bridge in the beginning moves like an actual bridge would if you stepped on it on the PS4. But it doesn't move on the switch demo.
That’s called pop in, and it is present on ps4 as well just not extreme, you can’t complain to much when it’s the same game wherever you want with slight downgrades a 5-16 watt portable tablet is playing a game a 100+ watt beefy console is that’s an achievement in gaming it’s just people are spoiled af these days and must not remember the gameboy and DS days a decade ago

Honestly I noticed the graphical difference right away on the Switch demo, but within an hour or so it didn't bother me at all.
Drop Shadows Les foilage lower-resolution but it still looks amazing..... don't forget people this is handheld so it makes sense

I was really planning on getting this, but I just can’t stomach the blurry effects
I have it on PS4, but never beat it, about 80% through...was considering getting it on Switch but I can't go backwards...it looks noticeably less crisp on Switch and that would bother me.
The differences aren't noticeable if you don't have the PS4 version running right next to it.
Its crazy how close they got it and even in certain areas its improved becuase they used an enhanced version (a more current update version) of unreal engine 4 on the switch version, because of them essentially being done with dq11 in japan for the ps4

lol I'm not usually a graphics guy but it's very noticeable when you release a "definitive version" where you can see the polygons on the MC's face

@@mekhspace9746 You'd have to learn 3D modeling to fully understand but all models are made up of polygons, the higher the polygon count the smoother the model, so think, N64 link with his jagged face vs BOTW link and everything in-between.
This version of the MC is clearly way more jagged in the closeup shots, which I found funny. Calling it definitive version is some goofy marketing considering the way it looks, but It should be good enough for people who haven't played yet, I already put way too many hours in.
@@omega8fattyacid you have no idea what you are saying....I have been a 3d artist for 10 years....the poly count difference between the switch and ps4 character models isnt noticeable especially because of the shader...its the resolution and lighting that got reduced...I have played both the ps4 and switch demo extensively so I know..its not called "definitive" cos of the graphics...its cos it has more content and options like riding other mounts, the 2D mode and orchestrated soundtracks

@@Soldano999 The PS4 version is actually superior in the graphical department. The lighting bounces more naturally so you get that sort very realistic reflection of light on the armor suits and things like that where as the Switch version is a bit bland and you can't really make out the differences between the refraction of light. In other words you can distinctly identify the separation of light and the graphical art in each scene. It has a more natural look to it. The brightness is also a bit darker shaded and the textures are a bit more bland, where as the PS4 is more crisp clearly running at a higher resolution. So yeah the PS4 is a slight upgrade and may be an issue for some that want the absolutely best in quality. But given all the features and the classic 2d style element incorporated into the switch version is a major win win and definitely outweighs the slight decrease in graphics.
Soldano999 Not it isnt. It is a huge difference on the PS4 and even more so on PC, especially after seeing the demo...yikes, it looked very blurry and grainy. However, I’m still getting it and might play a bit of it.
Just play the Demo on the switch. Looks great on the switch in my opinion . And in case you were wondering . I have a PS4 as well.

I played the PS4 version and I'll gonna play it on Switch too. Of course there's a visual downgrade but I think that it looks a pretty good port.

This is probably the best looking switch port of a AAA game. Side by side, of course there are differences, but if I were to just play it on it’s own, I don’t think I’d notice any of the compromises.
I’m someone who normally cringes when I hear people say that “switch ports look just as great.” As somebody who uses both Sony and Nintendo consoles, I know that this statement is just blatantly false. The difference is like night and day. (I’m not bothered by the switch being underpowered, I’m just bothered by people acting like it’s not.)
But man...this port really impressed me. I think it looks absolutely beautiful.
Check out Catherine Full Body. Somehow ATLUS made it look even better on Switch.

The switch was a huge downgrade. Didn’t look bad on the CZcams videos until I tried the demo...right after the cutscenes, the grass was really blurry and grainy. I will still buy it tho, but might not beat it. Since I platinumed the game on PS4 and have it on Steam too. I think I’ll rather play it again on PC as it looked stunning in maxed out 1440p...and steam has achievements.

This is how a comparison should be done. Slow scenes, side by side. It would be good if you could compare some of the later areas though. Small zones don't need to have as much changed as the big ones.
It lost alot of details but not in bad way since its Nintendo Switch not PS4. It is a good port in my opinion (not reducing too much of its graphics) unlike The Witcher 3 Switch Edition that becomes so bad and mostly suffers framerate drops i'm so glad that i'm not buying that game on my Switch..
The difference is ps4 is 40AUD and switch is 80AUD.

Although the PS4 Visuals are colorful, I have to tip my hat off to Square Enix, Nintendo, and Epic Games for re-porting the title from the ground up... including the fully orchestrated music and more exclusive features not in the PS4 or Windows 10 original version.
The only differences I see is textures and far away is blurry on the switch version .... but I think the switch version looks good enough to play in portable.... in dock, tired the demo looks good. Perfer to play portable.
Man it makes me feel like shit knowing im going to be playing this game on the switch, but need that extra story content

I really don't see why. I own a PS4 as well but i'm glad i waited. PLaying the demo right now and it looks very good to me at no point do i feel like a downgraded game.

Graphics don’t fucking matter. You don’t play Dragon Quest games for the graphics. This is exclusive to the Switch since Nintendo is publishing it, and to make up for how long it took

I don't know dude, this is still the same game. Unless you put them side by side the graphics downgrade is pretty insignificant. In fact one of the most impressive ports i've seen.

I'm surprised. I thought a colorful, anime-styled game like DQ XI wouldn't need a downgrade to run on Switch. Witcher 3 I can understand, but DQ XI isn't graphically intensive, I thought.
This isn't one of those flat-shaded anime games that Idea Factory churns out every 3 months. DQXI on PS4 Pro or PC looks almost like a CGI movie. The material-based rendering and lighting is top-notch and wrings every ounce of power out of the PS4 Pro. There was no way the Switch was going to come anywhere close.

I don't even know how to say this but I love the PS4 version a lot more. Well this game was originally created for it, Switch graphics are like sorta kind of blurry. Dark and shady as well, if only the two ports switched music/soundtrack with eachother. Then PS4 would be awesome amazing masterpiece 100% 🤩😎⭐🌟❤💖

wow those switch graphics are alot worse in person, now i'm hoping for the ps4 version to get the good soundtrack in order to play this
but atleast the game ran at 810p on switch . but overall a nice port to switch, also the game isnt as blurry as the witcher 3 on switch which ran at mostly 640p.
now that i've been playing the demo more, idk if i could give up it's portability, it's such a perfect type of game for the switch XD

If played in docked mode, you can fiddle with your tv's colour settings to get it looking just as good as the ps4 version, aside from resolution. Still pretty great though

The switch version seems less cell shaded. The graphical difference doesn't make up for the extra content that the switch version is getting. I'm definitely getting this one on my switch, even if that means no trophies (ouch).
Ive played the demo, it looks very good.i would say you must try it out yourselves first, not just make assumptions based on a vid here on youtube.thou i havent played this on ps4.

@@leonard9624 you can't patch the Switch's less powerful hardware... The PS4 version definitely looks a lot better. That said, I'll probably still get it on Switch for the extra content. Even though it's the worst version of the game (visually speaking) , it still looks good enough.

What’s strange is that the PS4 ver. Has parity with the switch in terms of resolution (on docked mode) at a fixed 900p, but the switch ver. Has some elements that look slightly better like the More detailed water shaders and strong bloom effects, with the PS4 ver. Having of course the Higher amount of foliage and density, albeit by a minor amount... the only real difference I see is the scaled TXAA anti-alias and the Darker tint that makes the game less vibrant then the PS4 ver.
