- It's hard to imagine your elderly parents or grandparents up and about, let alone living an active life. But for Dolly, who's 67, rock climbing helps her turn back the clock and bond with her daughter.

Theres a guy in my gym who just turned 70. Still lead climbs 5.12 on overhanging roofs. He's in better shape than most of the 20 year olds.
That's what I love about climbing, it's not like bodybuilding where you'll burn out by 35 but it's sustainable and really enjoyable with a nice community
@@georgebeasant5254This is so wildly true. I came from years of back pain from traditional bodybuilding type workouts (although by no means was I a bodybuilder). Climbing cured my chronic back pain and I feel like itâs made me an all around better athlete as well.
@@V8chump I never had back problems til I started climbing. Now I have a compressed disc that keeps me up nights.
My grandpa is 77 and he still climbs quite regularly. Not as high a grade but he certainly stays in shape.
A few years ago Chuck Odette climbed 5.14b at 64.
Itâs so wonderful that she can feel young again through climbing. Not only is she inspiring, but so is the community around her. Sometimes it is difficult to break down barriers and just be a friend to someone, regardless of age or ability. Hereâs to many more years of climbing, Auntie!!
I'm a 67-year-old woman. I started climbing at 64. I top-rope and lead climb three days a week. I regularly climb 5.10a routes and have climbed a few 5.10b and 5.10c routes. I also walk on a treadmill at home daily--6 miles on days I go to the gym and 8 or more miles on days that I don't climb. I have walked for years, but I was never an athlete until I hit 64. I love the challenge and the fun of indoor rock climbing.
You should go outdoors!
Cool story bro
Indoor rock climbing and "walking" doesn't make you an athlete đ€Ł
@@jeffdur1330 normally I try to be nice, but clearly you aren't feeling to kind, so maybe work on your reading comprehension. As they said they had walked for years BUT was never an athlete, meaning they took, did not constitute walking as making them an athlete. Stop yucking people's yum dude
I started 2 mos before turning 64...at JOSHUA TREE, of all places, so no joke. I'm in the gym most weeks, yet OUTSIDE is actually less intimidating. It's all the beady eyes & plastic đđ. I'm 65 now & just now delving into select 10As in the gym bcs our meetup is only 1x/wk, but we absolutely aren't organized for female climbers here (and bravo to Arizona & Texas for being so female-climb group friendly). I'm working fervently to establish a cadre of good partners (how they belay is SO important-- read that as LISTENS). I climbed multiple routes at Stryker in Montana & just booked a full day each- locally at Mission Gorge, San Diego, & another at Red River Gorge in Kentucky. I'm excited to get OUTSIDE again. I love the challenge & confidence building climbing has brought me, and don't care if I'm ever the snappiest climber at the gym. I know I'm HAVING fun & BRING the fun đ€đ€đ§ââïž
age 63 here..started at 59...climbing 11b and still improving. Started to lead climb this week!
Allez!
That's actually quite the good progression. A lot of young people don't have the determination to reach that level in such a time frame. Keep crushing. :)
Im at 10b after 1 month and nearly 10c i want to achieve an 11b eventually and lead climb. Well done shows you can never start too late either
Too bad it took 4 years, I promise it only gets more fun from here! And more time consuming... Till it inevitably consumes your existence. Anyways have fun!
This is great. One of my climbing buddies just turned 79 and my dad just started climbing this year the age of 72. He comes with me and my boys and all 3 generations of us just go and enjoy and make some memories. Good times.
my 72 year old grandpa still goes climbing with us. he even leads. itâs quite impressive!
I was 39 when I went on a hiking tour in New Zealand. There I met a man from Israel who was in his sixties, who simply told me that he was in good shape due to doing a lot of hiking and cycling around the year when the weather permits and going indoor climbing at other times. It was after this talk that I returned home and tried indoor climbing for the first time. Before that I thought I am too old to start this kind of activity. I'm 45 now, and I've been doing climbing since then regularly. All these restrictions are really in our head first, now I know that)
Thanks for sharing! It's never too late and we're never too old!
Was he called roni kass?
I'm nowhere close to her age just yet, but her mentioning that climbing helped her back pain reminded me.. I have fibromyalgia and the frequency of my flares has SIGNIFICANTLY decreased and my overall daily pain has decreased as well since I started climbing about a year ago. Me and my boyfriend host "top-rope tuesday's" at our local gym and we get a fair amount of people around or past their 40's/50's. After just a few sessions they often report decreased pain from older injuries or even arthritis (obviously, do take care if you are to climb with an injury). Climbing has been known to help with mental pain as well, we hear this most often. I just love it so much and I love hearing stories like our Aunty Dolly here
Ahh so this must be my encik's grandmother that he keeps talking about everyday during training
For context, encik means drill sergeant
My goodness. What an inspiring lady!! đâ€
that one lady in her senior climbing group being 80 really suprised me, amazing
Im only in my mid 20s but climbing also solved my back pain! Years and years of chronic back pain from working out is gone. Iâve been climbing for about 9 months and itâs crazy how much better it is
She is so awesome! My grandfather climbed up until he he fell sick with Alzheimer's, but he enjoyed ice and rock climbing well into his 60's. I started climbing about 6 months ago, and it's been amazing to continue his legacy. Love the older generation of climbers so much.
This lady is THE GOAT. Hats off to her. She brings good to the title of "aunty"
This is so beautiful!!! Thank you so much for sharingđđđ
She's so sweet. đ„°
So inspiring & heartwarming!
This was so beautiful to watch, big smile on my face the whole way through!
When I was in my early 20's, I lived in South Korea. There's a lot of good outdoor climbing there, and a lot of retired older Koreans who crush. One weekend I was climbing with some friends at a crag outside of Ulsan, and we hopped on a 12b with fixed draws that was pretty tough - I only got a few draws up. This old Korean lady, who must've been in her mid to late 50's, was telling me how to climb it, and I ignored her. After we got off, she got on the route and proceeded to turn to us and tell us all the beta AS SHE WAS CLIMBING IT. Humbling.
So good seeing I'm in company (I'm not much younger than you). My daughter got me into climbing a little over a year ago, and now she has me leading!! What we mom's will do for our kids, while loving every minute of it đ
Great InspirationđđȘ Respect!
37 just started climbing. Love this, gives me confidence Ill be climbing in 30 years and probably feel so much better because of it!
OMG this is so awesome!!!!! Go Aunty Dolly!!!!!
You're my inspiration Auntie Dolly !!! And all the strong cool senior ladies who climb! TQ so much đ„° for this powerful message that we should not limit ourselves
I love it. Those ladies are absolutely wonderful.
This is seriously inspiring
what a lovely lady!! this just means to show that everyone can climb and learn from it, no matter the age, gender, ethnicity, whatever else, climbing is for everyone :D
Omg goals ! I am still learning and already feel Iâm too old. I will keep trying!
So inspiring! Started rock wall climbing last week at age 69...Wadda blast!
How rad would it be to go climbing with your grandma?? Such an awesome video đ
amazing and encouraging !!
This video should have a million hits. I love it, I love it.
Age is just a state of mind.... look at auntie she is living proof that you can do anything =)
crushing it! there are a lot of older climbers, and climbing is definitely a sport you can continue doing for a long time if you are smart with your recovery and managing your injuries
Love this!! I'd love to see older people checking out this awesome sport.
Great! I love climbing. I had started doing it when i was 34.
This aunty is my inspiration!! â€
this is really inspiring
Ahhhh LOVE it! Life goals! :)
I love this! I boulder with my 64 year old dad and hes scared to go on rope, whereas im scared of him taking big falls on the crash pad lol. We've both been climbing for 6 years and I've only recently gotten him to try top rope
That's so great!
That's lovely!
Damnit I guess I can't give up on the training now can I! Epic! Legend :)
This put a smile on my face. What a sweet woman. Would belay anytime!
Lovely video, lovely people:)
Started climbing in 1973, I'm 68 now. I routinely lead 11+ outdoors (I suck in the gym), and occasionally get up the odd 12. The last 15 years has not been the greatest healthwise - lumbar spine issues mean no more real bouldering. Three level cervical fusion (you don't want to know), and now in cancer remission. The only good thing is losing weight during cancer treatment I'm finally down that 15 pounds I always wanted off in middle age! Power wise I'm weak as a kitten compared to my prime, but my mental game has mostly made up for it. Wished I knew then, when I could easily do one arm pullups, what I know now.
That is phenomenal. I am 66 and have climbed 5.13 for over 30 years with no injuries and now finally have perfect health due to consistent lifestyle and a primal diet. Never stop progressing your knowledge. The world has all the information but so little of the wisdom needed to use it.
I just see the title and I feel like commenting, you are so cool aunty! đđ
Inspiring!
It would be awesome to see that trio climbing
Right?
Wholesome
aiyo sheâs so cute â€
my mentor at the gym comes in with her granddaughter. One of her climbing buddies is a 74 year old gentleman and I cannot climb half as wellđ It is really encouraging to see people of all ages and body types work in something together.
Iâm really impressed! I hope I will climb at her age đ
I wanna be like her when I grow up!!
Great video!
In my local climbing gym, there are lots of climbers in their 60s and 70s who come regularly and are really not that bad! I started climbing at 35, now I'm 42 and still hoping to improve đ And hopefully I'll be able to climb till I'm 80 or so.đ
Where? I'm in San Marcos,.CA & it wd be NICE to see anyone close to my age.
@@donnamoore-sturgill6909 I'm from Germany :-) How old are you?
@@rabarbera2010 65. Began at nearly 64. Having FUN. Booked outdoor climbs in Red River Gorge, Kentucky & locally here at Mission Gorge in San Diego. Possibly doing a day in Joshua Tree National Park soon.
SO CUTEEE!!!!
Climbing in Taiwan is awesome. Thanks for sharing!
I think it is the staying socially young aspect which is greatly under appreciated in the world of climbing. I love how people of all ages / background hang together đ.
Honorary member of the Immortals Climbing Club!
There is a women in my gym, she is 65 now, and she is climbing like 2-3 times/week, she started rock climbing like 3-4years ago (ofc Covid pause didn't help to progress). And she is quite good, at the moment in bouldering she is climbing 6B - 6B+, and on a lead wall she beats ~6B, and sometimes attempts 6C-7A with a top rope :) oh, and we did some real rocks as well. She is not planning to stop!
Now I have no excuse to not get good lol. Started around the same time and her lead is better than me. I guess she is in the lead in terms of progress...
@@thegreatsoider3413 Well she works in children school as a physical education teacher, she knows few things about keeping a healthy body and keeping the longevity :) She is a gem to have around.
omg she reminds me of my mom so muchđ
at my gym because i climb during the day the average age is probably 65. Pretty inspiring to be honest! I made me consider my long term health goals more
I was dumped by a climber because I was a hiker. I said âteach meâ but he said our level would be too different. What he didnât know was that I was willing to try for me, not for him, to face my fear of height. I conquered my decades long fear of water by self learning how to swim since 2021. I can swim free style and breaststroke comfortably today. I am sure I can join a climbing gym to give rock climbing a go (I have harness and all sorts of biners from mountaineering days). I am retired. I set goals to look forward to until my eyes canât see, fingers frozen, mind goes, or heart gives up.
what??? teaching new climbers is one of the most fun parts, why would he do that....
@@iagree4686 Itâs probably an excuse to bail out ;)
Auntie super fit and cute!!!
aunty dolly is so cute! :)
very nice video for sure. good for her and good that climbing is for any age which is proven by this video again. one thing i dont agree with is the title, not necessarily because of the grade or whatever but there are so many climbers that are actually really good that are even older. i know a few people who are this age or older who climb around 8a, but they started climbing on a younger age ofcourse.
This is true with any of the more challenging sports. Like I took up this, skateboarding, & surfing laaaater. Believe me, if I would've started in even my early 40s I feel like I'd be crushing it. It's soooo about sticking with it & how often ya go. And getting outside of our HEADS.
â€â€â€â€
Impressive yes. Where I grew up there's quite a few old dogs who climb around 6a'ish free solo on their home crag đ
wholesome
Good Job
Very cool đŻ
She's fitter than me and I'm less than half her age omg
im unfit
@@SchismSphinx That may be the case but if you put your mind to it, you could put yourself on the same path as her. Everyone starts somewhere, no body are experts straight away.Go for it, never give up!
@@SchismSphinx I started climbing around your age and I got quite fit at around 40 now, being stronger than most people in the gym (ofc worlds away from the really strong people). You just need to get addicted to some sport - fitness will come as a byproduct. :)
Te quiero mucho tĂa dolly
Auntie rocking the Adidas five ten niad vcs! Fire
My first ever outdoor climb and...there was a guy that must have been in his 60s free soloing my route! đ
What do you call your Aunt when she is mountain climbing? Upping the aunty.
This is so cute haha
That title is PERSONAL.
I pray Iâm climbing at 67 and beyond
does she have social media?
Yes, and WHERE'S aunty climb?!!!!
What a badass!!!!
she has great technique đ«¶
â€â€â€
idk why i cried
When I dove into the majority of supportive, appreciative comments here- me too. Glad I wasn't alone. (Started at 64)
It's importnat to know that not all 67-years old can achieve this because of sedentarity during younger age. BUT! This is a lot of inspiration for the mindset! It's not about "everyone can do what she can", because it's not true, but everyone can try getting out of their comfort zone and be healthier and more connected đ„° You might even surprise yourself!
But they can maybe do a lower route. This is what's great about climbing, whereas when we surf, we never known what Mother Ocean's gonna toss our way!
This is a nice video đ. Climbing is one of the physical sports, where age doesn't matter as much as in many other sports. Of course it matters but you can balance out the explosive power loss with other attributes. I started climbing at 35 years and my personal best has been 7c since 1999. I was still able to climb a 7c in 2020 at 61y and hopefully this year again after overcoming some health problems now. And even if not, climbing beautiful outdoor routes is so much fun in good company.
Again, climbing is a all-age friendly sport with some entertainment and socializing
I knew I sucked.. but now totally depressed knowing a 70 year old lady climbs better đ
Don't worry, the title is lying
Dude. You all good. Ignore the show-offs. Point is: KEEP IT MOVING. There folks who 'throw in the towel' on fun before they're 40! Rock on đ€
There's several 60+ yo couples at my gym in various stages of climbing experience - from 1 year in to decades.
In my martial arts club, most of our instructors are 70, our eldest member is 78. He still spars, even!
Never believe anyone who says physical activity isn't for the old. It's never too late to try something new.
climb better than me is not difficult, I just wish I can walk upright when I'm at her age!
Who is the lady at 2:08? Does she have a channel?
Hope I'm her in my 60s â„ïž
â€
holy shit, that 80yo fit aunty
why so many people triggered about the title? just enjoy the wholesome video
Three guesses...first 2 don't count. Perhaps: Lack of humility, humor, 'topped out' on hubris comes to mind. Most aren't half her age & are gonna evolve after life delivers some 'health surprise' & kids they're actually actively raising. Loving the overall STOKE from MOST OF US here. And I'd rather climb with this aunty, frankly. The DBs are sounding like a bunch of aggros whose personalities just show up to đ© on a parade. Whatevs.
Can you please tell me the name of the climbing gym in this video and the city?
climb central kallang, singapore
