    I'm now aware that tilix is only minimally maintained at the moment. I didn't know this before I made the video. It doesn't really change my opinion on it, however, so the video is still worth while. Follow me on Mastodon to file complaints: fosstodon.org/@thelinuxcast

      Just because software is minimally or even unmaintained doesn't mean it is useless. Good video!

      It's been this way for a bit BUT it has so many features and I haven't found many odd bugs so I continue using it. Feature complete isn't always abandonware. :)

    In the Quake games, you access the console by pressing ~ (tilde), and it slides down from the top as an overlay. that's why it's called Quake mode, and now I'm realizing that's why one of the dropdown terminals is named Tilda.

  • @thingsiplay
    @thingsiplay Před rokem +3

    As I said it already in Mastodon, here same message:
    BTW the XFCE terminal supports Quake like dropdown and tabs too. Just assign a key combination to `xfce4-terminal --drop-down`.

    Fun fact: Tilix is written in D programming language. Which is a wonderful language not many people know about.

    I ment to comment in the previous video. Like you said, Alactrity is designed to only really work right on a tiling window manager, and while Kitty is often recomended by the same people, it absolutely is designed to work in a traditional floating window manager.

    I'm glad you like Tilix. I figured you would... The question is, when you go back to a WM will you still use it?
    I use it on all my systems, GUI or WM no difference at all... Lol
    I'm glad you took that time to follow my suggestion.

    I have been enjoying Wezterm for my terminal in fedora, windows and few other machines running different debian based distros. I use DEs and WMs depending on the machines. Wezterm has fit most of my needs with both tabs and panes, plus it has alot of additional setting and customization, with good documentation.

    Thanks for the review, I find these reviews much more informative than a distro review. It is a much more definitive and quantitative video due to its more focused topic and viewpoint. Thank you Matt.

  • @phonewithoutquestion80

    Excellent video as always man.
    As for me, eh, hassling about with Urxvt/Xterm and such made me miss the creature comforts of xfce4-terminal, and drop-down mode is so fantastic for container workflow.

    Right now, Tilix is my goto. If you need it, it supports multiple sessions in a single window. If you're logged onto multiple machines, each machine can have its own session, within the same window, with its own set of planes. You can save your configuration as a json file, so you can have a consistent setup every time you log in.

    The original Quake game had a drop down console to show more detailed information from the game. That's why it's called "Quake", and the other variants like "Yakuake".

    Switched from Tilix (which was great) to Terminator, then finally to Konsole (which is imo the best terminal tool I've ever used, super feature rich and doesn't used much RAM at all). I also downloaded and configured Wezterm in the event I have to use Windows or Mac.

    what d.e. (if any) (i reckon kde since fedora and i dont picture you using gnome for some reason) are you using in this video? i've been trying to get those macos-looking titlebars on my windows coming from a no-d.e. route (just herbstluftwm) but tilix has just enormously large text in its titlebar messing up my gtk3 theme and i have no idea how to reduce the font-size, my knowledge doesn't really extend past gtk.css but it seems like there isn't a way to do it from there

    If anyone is willing to spend a little time with XFCE like you have, they will also come to the conclusion on how great it is and along with applications that just work in the desktop environment like XFCE. I think you should do a MATE desktop next and see how it compares to XFCE, long term users of MATE believe MATE is the better desktop environment,

    • @folksurvival
      @folksurvival Před rokem +2

      I've used MATE for a year now (not sure if you'd consider that long-term or not) and it's my own personal conclusion that MATE is the better DE of the two although XFCE is still a very good DE (especially the latest 4.18 release).

    • @javabeanz8549
      @javabeanz8549 Před rokem

      I loved MATE, but Ubuntu and Mint MATE seem to be second class citizens, just too many little quirks. Cinnamon seems to be the favorite child at Mint, much more polished and stable.

    I recently changed to Tilix from the Termite fork I've been using. I think It's equally fast as Termite, IF it's run in borderless mode. (on my system with my aging intel igpu Alacritty & especially Kitty are really bad at rendering their own window before my patience runs out & other Gnome Terminal based options are just much slower than Termite and now Tilix)
    I don't need any of the fancy features, I just like the scrollbar & that it's actually fast. (and basically it doesn't suck like ST or URXVT)
    What I don't like is that it's using dconf for theming..

    Does anyone know how to open tilix maximized? I have neofetch on my .bashrc file and it cuts of some of the info from it due to the terminal being in a small window, then when I manually maximize the window, the info that had been cut off the screen is still missing.

  • @Psoewish
    @Psoewish Před rokem

    If you move back to a twm and find yourself unhappy with alacritty or similar popular options, I’d say maybe wezterm is with a look? It’s configured in lua which I suppose is somewhat polarizing on its own, but it does have tons of features and well … it’s not yaml

    This terminal emulator is my favorite, I've been using it for probably five years now. But I got the impression that the author abandoned it. Over the past year, there were no answers to a single issue or feature request, there were no significant commits ... I would be glad if I'm wrong. After the release of the new version of vte, package maintainers built a new minor version, but this cannot be considered a development, since there is no activity in the project.
