I recently listened back to some of these Darkwave stuff from the likes of VNV Nation, Covenant, Colony 5, etc. and I noticed, that the possible sounds of the synthezisers these artists are/were using are somewhat limited, so eventually it all becomes a bit samey, as there is only so much you can do with these. So I think its fine that there is not as much Darkwave as there used to be. I wish however they transfer the styles, voices and atmosphere over but mainly produce with Cubase, Pro Tools, Ableton or even Fl, perhaps in combination with their classic synth, to be able to create a wider array of sounds. I think there is lots of potential for genremash of Darkwave with other electronic music styles, Trance in particular. All that is however not the case for Deine Lakaien, as Ernst Horn uses quite a lot of classical instruments in his production, but also I wouldn't clearly box DL as Darkwave.
