    The guns British use are the Martini-Henry, a breech-loading single-shot rifle with a lever action, it's way far faster than a musket

      @@Mr.scooter-le8yo The Zulu managed to get in close quarters with them and attack is what I meant by not fast enough. Look at the % of numbers of wounded and dead. When the Zulu pulled back they still had 75% of their force left. They would have crushed the British who would have run out of ammo if the Zulu hadn't left. The Zulu were known for their numbers, tactics, and speed.

    the Zulu's had earlier that day slaughtered 1.500 British at isandlwana in a surprise attack, which is depicted in the prequel movie to this called Zulu dawn, its that 1,500 men that the Zulu acquired the rifles they used at Rourke's drift.
    and just for context the governor in Africa at the time was told not to start a war with the Zulu but he ignored it and found excuses to engage them some of which involved the Boer's and added buildup towards the Boer wars later.
    the commander of the army left 1,500 men to build a camp at isandlwana while he took the main force to look for the Zulu, when the Zulu attacked the camp messengers told the commander multiple times but he ignored it believing that was a diversion not the main force.
    Rourke's drift occurred after the prince sent to watch the British did something similar as the governor and attacked when he was told not to, when the king didn't want to escalate things more than they already had been.
    just ours later reinforcements arrive at Rourke's drift
    talks went ahead but led to nothing and a few days later a force of 12,000-15,000 Zulu fought a British force of 4,200 British, 1,000 African allies, 2 Gatling guns, and 10 cannons.
    in the end Britain had 18 dead while the Zulu had 473 dead, there was also hangings after the battle as punishment but neither that or the last battle is depicted in any form yet.

    • @bigenglishmonkey
      @bigenglishmonkey Před 11 měsíci

      @@petercollingwood522 i got my months mixed up, rorke's drift was in January, what i mentioned was in July.
      after rorke's drift the government sent more troops from Britain, once they met up with the troops already in south Africa they had found negotiations had failed.
      so that led to the last battle of the anglo-zulu, the battle of Ulundi.
      the battle was basically what Britain expected the battle of Isandlwana to be.
      the troops lined up with cavalry on the sides and rear to prevent encirclement.
      but the British firepower prevented the zulu's from even reaching their lines.
      only a few got close enough to throw some spears but that was about it.
      the British deaths came from the few zulu's using guns since they had time to practice with them by then.
      eventually the Zulu's broke and fled to which the British cavalry along with their African allies ran down every Zulu on the battlefield they could get until the Zulu's had left the plains they were fighting on.
      then followed by the executions i mentioned.
      it wasn't a very complicated battle, just the equivalent of troops in WW1 getting mowed down as they run across no mans land.
      was that what you meant?

    Being British this is one of my favourite songs, also those 100 plus men of the 15th foot now known as the Welsh Borderers Regiment are heroes. On that day 11 Victoria Crosses where won which is still the most amount of Victoria Crosses won in one day in British Military History. A couple of hours before Rorke's Drift 1,500 Officers and Soldiers were massacred by 10,000 Zulu Warriors where after the battle 3,000 to 4,000 Zulu's were sent to Rorke's Drift to kill the small garrison of British Soldiers, but due to the Brilliant military skills by the commanding officer, Rorke's Drift was still in British hands when a Brigade of British Calvary turned up 2 hours after the battle. I do feel sorry for the Zulu's but as a Patriotic Brit Rorke's Drift is one of the greatest moments when a very small British Army garrison out numbered by the opposition won the day by heroism, superior training, guts and determination by the defenders of Rorke's Drift. 💂‍♂️💂‍♂️💂‍♂️💂‍♂️🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇸🇪🇸🇪💙💛🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦

      Just to be clear there was no Welsh regiment at Rourke's Drift there were a small number of Welshmen in the two regiments however the regiments were the 24 th foot and the Royal Engineers both of which consisted mostly of Englishmen, there were very brave Welshmen who were awarded the VC and later the name of the regiment was changed but the Welsh presence was quite small in number. I love the film but it isn't very accurate both in its portrayal of certain characters and it's ignoring why so many VCs were awarded, I cast no aspersions on the bravery of the Soldiers however there have been similar rearguard actions in British history which didn't get anything like the same attention because they hadn't followed a huge defeat the day before. Just to be clear no Zulu's were sent to attack Rorkes Drift approximately 4 thousand of the 20 thousand that had routed our Soldiers at Islandwana took it upon themselves as they didn't feel they had contributed to the route and wanted to impress Chetawayo.

    Earlier the same day the Zulus had massacred 1’500 British and colonial troops that had been caught in the open. So the Zulus could replace there older guns with the same single shot rifles used at this battle. Those single shot rifles were quick to reload and a trained solider could expect to hit three or four Zulus as they charged. But that still left around 17 spears against each bayonet all whilst being shot at by Zulus from a hilltop. It was the tactic of building walls of sacks and boxes to slow the Zulu charge that won the day.

      They didn't really win. The Zulu retreated (the most likely theory being they were too low on morale to continue). Some think too that they respected the defenders bravery so much they opted not to kill them. The Zulu had the numbers left to kill the remaining defenders and the defenders were down to one building left to defend when they pulled back.

  • @AIHumanEquality
    @AIHumanEquality Před 5 měsíci +1

    Everyone gives the British credit and props for this battle but I think the Zulu were far more impressive. Can you imagine the courage it took to run at your enemy with nothing but a spear while they were all armed with rifles, let alone that they won many times doing that? Insane bravery.

  • @bumblebeeyellowdragon

    It's really unknown why the Zulu retreated but if they hadn't it's very possible they could have overrun the British position in this battle. They still had massively superior numbers at the time they pulled back
    Also the British had about 5min to set up defenses by the time they heard the Zulu were coming. The Zulu were known for being notoriously fast.

    Down vote for being a liberal and immediately condeming the British without knowing the reasons for the war.
    This was not just a case of the British invading and colonising. It was a response to the constant raiding by zulus into British and Boer lands. War was inevitable. The zulus along with all the black tribes (xhosa, bantu, ndebele) are not native to South Africa. They originated to the north in the congo and conquered what is now SA, slaughtering the native Khoi Khoi and San peoples. The vast majority of land in SA was bought or traded off the natives by the British and Boer. History is now being revised by anti-White liberals to spread White guilt while making saints out of blacks.
