- The Cold War left its mark all over Berlin. The Soviet occupying power is always present, especially in West Berlin.
A camera team accompanies a military patrol on its journey through the west part of the city.
While driving through the streets of West Berlin, the armed forces pass Checkpoint Charlie and drive along Friedrichstraße to the Great Angel.
Allied troops also intensified their patrol in East Berlin. A distrustful coexistence of the two powers creates a tense atmosphere in a divided Berlin.

Vor allem bringt das auch nichts. Wenn es jemand drauf anlegt, dann bekäme er es auch weg. Man müsste halt nur jedes einzelne Bild manuell bearbeiten. Das ist zwar etwas aufwändig, aber machbar.

I'm confident that all four of them were reliable and loyal KGB. No way that USSR would allow ordinary soldiers into West Berlin.
I have seen many Soviet soldiers in Berlin (West), either travelling to and from Spandau or guarding the war memorial in Straße des 17 Juni as Dave says. I don't think they were hand picked, just ordinary national servicemen.
As Andropov said, KGB is not a special service like the ones in bourgeois countries, KGB is a tool to defend the socialism.
This is a very complex question. KGB minors usually were drafted from a soviet customs , or soviet forces, which considered a huge raise in a officer career. Most of those guys weren't much gifted, or had any extraordinary talents and the most important they barely speak german. Which leads to two option: escape soviet union leaving everything behind and face poverty and neglection in the better decorations, completely alone in foreign planet or living a soviet middle class life, get an apartment from ministry of defence, dacha, lada without any queues using his priveleged status and just raise kids.

Wow! So weird to revisit divided Berlin. The Soviet cars contrasted against the 1977 vehicles from the West look like they drove straight out of 1965.
They started producing Volga GAZ-24 in 1968. GAZ (Gorky Automobile Plant) was a huge mostly military-oriented industrial enterprise, and civil cars were not among its major products. As for me, the appearance of GAZ-24 is much better than a soap-bubbles design of modern cars, which all look the same and dull.

Crossing east to west it was good to have a Soviet vehicle in the line behind you, because the East Germans would speed the process to get them through. I followed one of the Soviet vehicles once and within two minutes they stopped and bought curywurst and Coca Cola at a street stand.

Unrelated, but the tanks are rolling in Europe again! Hell of a note, we thought that we were past this type of stuff. We were wrong. Europe's streets and buildings will get a whole new set of bullet pockmarks and shrapnel striations. Profoundly depressing.

I served in Berlin during the Cold War with the British Army, Intelligence Corps, and I was there when the Wall fell.
As Berlin was still technically an occupied city, all four of the occupying powers had access to the other power's sectors. Western military personnel were allowed into the Soviet Sector off duty. the Soviets didn't allow their personnel the same freedom to visit West Berlin, of course.
As well as off-duty visits, the British, American and French forces asserted their right of access to the Soviet Sector by carrying out "flag tours" into East Berlin every day of the year except Christmas Day The Soviets did the same in the Western sectors.
There were two kinds of British flag tours into the Soviet Sector. The first kind were organised sightseeing trips to "show the flag". Personnel from any unit stationed in the city could put their name down for a trip.
The other kind of flag your was carried out by my unit, 3 Intelligence and Security Company. They were done for intelligence gathering purposes. We drove marked military vehicles - Mercedes Geländewagens - and wore uniform. We didn't wear the distinctive cypress green beret of the Intelligence Corps, of course. When I did flag tours I wore a beret and cap badge from the King' s Regiment. They were an infantry regiment that traditionally recruited from my home city and they were stationed in Berlin at the time.
The US and French forces also ran both sightseeing and intelligence gathering flag tours.
The only authority that we recognised in East Berlin was the Soviet Army. We didn't acknowledge that the VoPos or NVA had any authority in the Soviet Sector. In fact we often made special efforts to annoy them whenever we could. If they ever tried to stop us we would only say to them
"Ich bin ein Mitglied der alliierten Streitkräfte. Bringen Sie einen sowjetischen Offizier."
(I am a member of the Allied Forces. Bring a Soviet officer.)

@@tommurphy3190 was there in 67 69. Memory of approx 4 Skodas and a Zil retriever driving by Clayalle and the US mission house. All Skodas were oil burners with smoke and all vehicles were painted pastel colors.....I m sure so they would be noticed.
Interesting, it's hard to imagine living in a city where half of the people are literally prisoners held in behind a huge wall simply because they were born there.

Nicht zu vergessen, dass es das an anderen Standorten in der Bundesrpublik auch gab. Ich erinnere mich noch gut an die mit Gardinen verhängten Opel Rekord der Sowjets, die durch Baden-Baden fuhren. Der Vater von KLassenkameraden war Abgesandter der Bundesrepublik, die Franzosen hatten eine Stadt in der Stadt mit 5000 Einwohnern und selbst die Kanadier hatten eine Niederlassung, von den Amis und Engländern nicht zu reden. Wir hatten Klein-Frankreich mitten in der Stadt und bekamen die meist erst dann zu sehen, wenn wir als Fahrschüler in die Straßen einfuhren um rechts vor links zu üben. Heute fast alles vergessen. Ich habe Mühe, das Jugendlichen im Jahre 2021 überhaupt noch verständlich machen zu können.

Das habe ich 1980 am Kudamm abends life erlebt... plötzlich in der Kneipe/Kudamm Eck kam eine sowjetische Patrouille herein..drehte eine Runde und ging wieder.... trotzdem ein komischer Anblick ☝️

So einen Wolga Kombi hab ich nie zuvor gesehen. Die Limousinen fuhren als Taxi im Osten herum.

@@karlrainerroetschke2530 Nein, da auch ein Kombi zu sehen, in Belgien verkauft als "Ambassador". Ich war in der DDR Wolgaschlosser. Der Kombi hatte die Nummer GAZ24 und eine andere Nummer dahinter. Der Wagen war in Belgien auch mit Diesel erhaeltlich. Nachzulesen im Auto-Katalog von 1979. Es war auch in der DDR der einzige PKW Siebensitzer, da man im Kofferraum zwei Notsitze einbauen konnte. Mit Blickrichtung nach hinten. Es war eine Art sowjetischer Amischlitten.

The yellow-and-black '69-70 big American Ford at 4:29 could well have gone on these four-power tours of the East Zone earlier, if it was sold off by the US military by then which I could see them doing with an off-the-shelf sedan, and nothing about it from what I can see points to it being anything fancier than a fleet-spec Custom with add-ons.

Das Café Adler kommt nicht vor, weil es 1977 kein Café Adler am Checkpoint Charlie gab. Das Café hat erst später eröffnet. Und Spione wären ziemlich dämlich gewesen, sich ausgerechnet dort zu treffen...

That was a normal occurrence in West Berlin - saw them from time to time lugging around in their outdated cars, never waved when you waved at them. Was in Tempelhof in the mid to late 80s.
Don't really think that Gaz 24 is an outdated car for 80s. You can clearly see cars from 60s on the roads of West-Berlin.

Things turned sour when the east Germans delibertly run over a British Mission car with an Army truck.....killing some of the 4 British officers.
The Russians got very upset !
This game was supposed to be a kind of a Gentlements agreement.....blatant murder was defenitely not part of the agenda.

The Russians gave the East German leadership a big time dressing down....because they violated an agreement the Russians signed and stood by.
As a result the game continued with no more incidence till the reunification of Germany.

Nee SOXMIS hatte Zugang zum BRD, aber jeder Sov durfte nach Westberlin. Ging auch andersrum, also Brixmis durfte fast ueberall in der DDR, und normale Brit Soldaten die in Westberlin stationiert waren, durften nach Ostberlin jedoch nicht in der restlichen DDR, ausser auf der Durchreise zwischen Helmstedt und W. Berlin, diese wurde von allen Seiten sehr streng kontrolliert.
In 1977 Brezhnev unknowingly contributed to resolving this division by appointing Gorbachev Minister of Agrculture.
It was irrelevant, the military success in Afghanistan warranted two high ranking KGB members to become leaders between them.
I think it was Andropov who had spotted Gorbachev as a true reformer.
They should have arrested Gorbachev for highly betraying his motherland!

Max Janoch.. Auf der Potsdamer Konferenz wurde der 4-Mächte-Status für Berlin festgelegt. Alle 4 Mächte USA, UK, Frankreich und die UDSSR hatten das Recht in den jeweiligen anderen Gebieten Militärpatrouillen mit einem Fahrzeug in der DDR und in ganz Berlin durchzuführen - ich glaube zur gegenseitigen Rüstungskontrolle und natürlich der West-Allierten zur Durchfahrt zur Versorgung der West-Truppen ( USA, UK und France ) in West-Berlin durch die das Gebiet der DDR auf den Transitrouten
Aus dem selben Grund warum die Amis und Tommys das auch durften ;) Die Franzmänner mit Sicherheit auch

Das fiel aber bei den US Soldaten am Checkpoint Charlie auf, da die einige Fehler gemacht hatten bezueglich Abzeichen usw. aber die haben die natuerlich nicht zurueckgeschickt.

Mein Vater diente irgendwo in der BRD in der Britischen Armee 1954-56, Queen's Bays. Ich war 1991-3 in Herford, NRW stationiert, 7th Signal Regiment.

No, Soxmis weren't allowed into West Berlin. Under the Potsdam agreement any of the 4 allied powers could access all 4 sectors of Berlin, but not the ''other'' Republics proper. Soxmis were allowed into the Federal Republic proper, but regular Sov military weren't. Soxmis were only about 50 soldiers so they would have been wasting their limited resources going to West Berlin when any Sov military could go there anyway. Obviously some of those visiting West Berlin would not be what they appeared. Soxmis vehicles had specific number plates with a large USSR flag on it. In the British Army in West Germany all personnel were given cards showing what those looked like and if spotted instructions to call Int Corps in Herford and report the sighting. Presumably NVA soldiers had the same type of instructions for sightings of Brixmis etc. but anyway Stasi goons tried to shadow them.

Offenbar ist den Medienmachern beim Schnitt nicht aufgefallen, das ein Wolga Kombi den Checkpiont Charlie überquert, während die anderen Aufnahmen eine Limousine zeigen. Am Ende fährt wieder der Kombi über die Grenze. Kann es sein, das schon damals manipulativ von den Medien berichtet wurde?
Die Aufnahmen wurden mit zwei Autos gefilmt, einem Kombi und einer Limousine.

Beschränkten sich diese gegenseitigen "Inspektionen" (wirkliche Kontrollen waren das sicher nicht) auf Berlin oder konnten die Westalliierten auch durch die DDR fahren, wie sie wollten ?
Die durften durch die ganze DDR fahren .Wir bekamen öfters in der NVA Kaserne ,von der Amerikanischen Militärmission Besuch.

It was Crazy - in the center of east berlin there was more american military then russian military. The americans where shopping and it was not allowed for russians to leave there base.
But the American, the British and the French occupation sectors were larger than the Soviet one. Soviet soldiers were mostly allowed to visit public places only in groups with a commander. It was reasonable: even in 1980s common Germans considered Soviet troops as invaders. In general, some soldiers being alone may easily commit criminal offences like Americans on Okinawa, remember the rapes of Japanese schoolgirls.
@@dvmurkus No - the East Germans did not see the Russian troops as occupiers. He felt sorry for them because they all knew how dirty the Russians were in their barracks. They were seen as allies against NATO and everyone knew that the Russians were in Germany because the Germans started World War II - they were aware of their guilt.

@@Aluminiumplattewhat the heck are you talking about?? Only 2 year conscripts lived in barracks and they certainly were not dirty. They were drilled mercilessly on the account of cleanness and neatness ( there's a joke in Russia " I learned to iron in the army") and there are countless jokes about cleaning the base itself, like drying the puddles after the rain. A soldier would be punished for having his collar dirty or god forbid his boots not shiny enough. Officers and their families lived mixed with the Germans and were free to move around anywhere in East Berlin. Don't thank me.

Wir hatten an der Sektoren-Grenze wirklich nichts zu melden, dass war bis zum Schluss eine Allierten-Grenze! Bete-Bete Tanten und Schwurbler begreifen das bis heute nicht. (Verwandter war höherer Dienstgrad b.d. Grenztruppen der DDR)

die Sowjetische Militärmission kurvte auch in den westlichen "Zonen" von Frankreich, USA und Großbritannien mit einem jeweils speziellen Kennzeichen rum. Die konnten sogar rotzfrech auf das Kasernengelände der Bundeswehr fahren. Man konnte sie auffordern wieder zu fahren, Notfalls mit Hilfe der Militärpolizei der USA, Frankreich oder GB
Auch Bundeswehrsoldaten führten stets Informationen über diese sowjetischen Fahrzeuge mit und waren auch verpflichtet, deren Auftauchen umgehend an den Stab zu melden. Kontaktaufnahme war aber DIenstsoldaten streng verboten. Nur Offiziere waren denen gegenüber weisungsbefugt.

Was denkst du, für wen die Übergänge Checkpoint Charly und Glienicker Brücke waren? Als Normalsterblicher bist du da nicht durchgekommen.
Außerdem haben die Russen das Gefängnis in Spandau bewacht - da wo Rudolf Hess inhaftiert war. Alle vier Wochen haben sich Amis, Tommy, Franzosen und die Russen die Klinke zur Wachablösung in die Hand gedrückt. Und das russische Ehrenmal im Tiergarten stand auch in Westberlin. Geregelt wurde alles im Vier-Mächte-Abkommen.

I would imagine the reception would be cold. The same would go for a Western force I'm the East.
There is a video on here explaining on the BFG groups on how to drive from west Germany to West Berlin and it came with restrictions I'm sure these Soviets likely had too while going through the west, such as not stopping in specific areas, demand to only speak to specific officers in case of trouble and various other protocols. The largest one in that video was not to draw attention by speaking Russian to anyone there.
The Soviets likely had similar restrictions too.

The letters on military license plates were put according to some separate logic. I saw military vehicles with the letters "УЖ" in Siberia where there was not a single city with the first letter "У" in the name nearby.
