We had a hard time keeping our eyes dry through this one... As a child of childhood trauma the most powerful line of this movie is, "I guess sometimes there just aren't enough rocks". Much love and keep on keepin on J.
So many metaphors in this movie. Jenny believed that running away meant safety and she taught Forest that running would save him too. Her gift to him was a pair of running shoes...ironically! He ran from the bullies and ended up in college, he ran in Vietnam and survived, he ran to cope with Jenny's inability to trust his love. Jenny spent most of her life running from her past, and the fact that she was barefoot on their wedding day seems a symbolic way to show that she finally found a sense of safety and security with Forest.

@@sebastianolivares3021 yes, good observation! I felt like the wedding scene had so much symbolism. Jenny is restored to wholeness and stands "grounded" on her bare feet, no longer running away. Forrest wears the shoes that she had given him, standing straight and sure without any sign of the childhood debility that might have held him back but for Jenny. Lt. Dan stands on "new" feet that symbolize his struggle to accept great loss, but his choice for fulfillment despite it. Dan's wife's ethnicity is something I hadn't considered; but it obviously shows that love is stronger than fear or bitterness, and that good things can come from even the hardest times. Jenny had spent her whole life metaphorically running from her emotional issues; Forrest had spent his whole life running, literally, from fear and pain. Dan didn't run at all, but stood his ground and bore the scars of it...yet, he learned to walk once more. The three characters coming all together, seemed like a way of showing that our lives may not go as we imagine or wish. Sometimes it seems unfair, and we may choose to handle that in our own individual ways. But ultimately, we will find what we need, if only we are open to receiving it. It's a magnificent movie on so many levels! Each time I watch it, I find another layer in the story and here you are, picking up on yet another detail. Thanks for that!
I agrée. She recognized she was too damaged for a healthy relationship, but she knew her son and Forrest needed each other especially since she was dying of aids. 💔
One of my favorite symbolic moments happens right after 54:40: When Forrest finishes his speech at Jenny’s grave, a flock of birds takes off from the tree, echoing her childhood wish to be turned into one so she could “fly far, far away” (from the childhood trauma that has plagued her entire life) and finally be free 🪶
Also the feather came to him right before Jenny finally came to be with him and it was gone again after she left this life. It was temporarily in one place, just as she was finally.
@@bamachine I like that interpretation! I also think of the feather as representing fate. At the end of the movie, Forrest questions his mom's and LT. Dan's differing perspectives on fate. Are we controlled, or just floating around on a breeze? He comes to the conclusion they were both right. The feather is floating around on the breeze, but then Forrest affects the feather by taking it with him to a place it would not have gone on its own. Then, it continues to float around once again from there. But its trajectory is altered because it's starting from a different place now. instead of from the bus top.

It develops a following after years of being out as people slowly start to watch it and develop a fanbase around it. No, a film that was a box office success, talked about by everyone upon it's release and theatrical run, which then goes on to win awards at a show watched by millions, is not a cult classic.
I love it when reactors cry, and i love that you told her "it's okay" when she said she didn't want to cry. Go ahead and let it out, you can't move forward until you allow yourself to feel your emotions. Loved y'alls reaction! And glad that you understood the character of Jenny.
One little nitpick: this one was never a cult classic that managed to finds its audience and trascend that status. It was a straight classic from the start. It was a big studio movie with a huge budget, big name actors and a really famous director. That's how they could afford all that music and the special effects needed to insert Forrest in all that real-life historical footage. It was a huge hit when it came out and got all the accolades, including six Academy Awards in 1995, and it has stood the test of time.
Jenny is for the streets. No excuse. She had sex with a childhood friend she knew to be mentally challenged. She then prostitutes herself until she gets pregnant and has AIDS. She just tells Forrest the kid is his because, once again, she knew he wasn't able to know better and she said she's followed him in the news so she knew he was rich. Jenny never even wrote him when he was at war. Not once. The excuses for her amaze me. Truly. Change the sexes and everyone would see her for what she was. An abused person who went on to abuse
@@PhuckYT12 I believe a “garbage take” would be any attempt at making Jenny redeemable throughout 95% of the movie. The idea that she was protecting Forrest is delusional and anyone who believes that has used the same excuse in their lives and have unfortunately given themselves a pass because they had “self awareness” they were toxic but they didn’t have the courage, fortitude, or compassion to be honest with the person they say they loved. I’ve been in a similar situation on the other side. The toxic partner thought they were being responsible by keeping a distance over years, idealistically dreaming of a world where they weren’t hurt and the relationship could work out. But it turns out true love is being honest with someone, and if you feel like you can’t be in a relationship, don’t sporadically pretend like you are in one. Jenny is a victim, but not a hero.
Many people dont realize just how much damage childhood SA can do to a person. Jenny is a tragic character that too many people look down on not realizing why she was the way she was.
You can empathize with a character and understand why they're behaving a certain way and still call those actions deplorable and shitty. It's not one way or the other, but I agree that people judge Jenny too harshly without considering her childhood. Tbf, her behavior is deserving of some amount of judgement, but understanding why she was behaving that way is also necessary to consider. Jenny would be the first to admit her lifestyle was unhealthy and ended up hurting the one person who actually cared about her.
I always find Forrest Gump reactions so interesting. There are a lot of diverse opinions on the character of Jenny. But I think it is pretty straight forward when you think her entire character through and think about every scene she was in. The movie is just so fast paced and so much is happening that Jenny's desolation popping up every now and again makes her out to be a character that many look down upon. But I think shes super real. She doesn't think she deserves Forrest. Also, the 70's were different in terms of how widespread psychology was among the population and how people process trauma etc. so it only makes sense she wouldn't know how to deal with her situation and know how to find that wake up call.
I haven't seen a single reactor really get jenny. The parallels between her and Forest. They are both running through life. Forest is running to find himself. Jenny is running to lose herself and escape her horrible past. She has probably convinced herself that it's her fault men treat her bad and does not want to get too "intimately" close to forest and risk him becoming another horrible man in her life.

To be fair I think most people that get it are those that either a)went through similar trauma themselves or b)witnessed someone go through it or know someone that went through it. Those people get Jenny. Others look down on her or just are confused by her as to why she is the way she is. But she is really just trying to heal her whole life and she never takes advantage of Forrest although her actions of course hurt him...

I actually related well to both main characters as I was socially behind (perhaps mild autism but I was never diagnosed) and was bullied daily all through elementary school while I suffered utter emotional neglect at home. The part I cry the most is when she is throwing rocks at the house and I can understand the pain she feels.
Jenny never got any of Forrest's letter because she was traveling everywhere trying to find herself. Jenny waited till Forrest stopped running everywhere before she sent him a letter. They were both on a very different journey that finally brought them together in the end.
Believe me...the studio had NO problem paying the royalties for the music in this film. It was a MAJOR production at the time...and they knew they had an Academy Award contender on their hands here. They were however, cautiously optimistic about how it would do at the box office, but it did end up being a blockbuster...as well as winning multiple Oscars! :)
I've watched about a million-and-a-half Forrest Gump reaction videos and yours is the first to make Dan's "I'll be an astronaut" & space-shuttle-legs connection. Congrats. You are also the first to make the smiley-face & Veronica's veil connection. I am impressed!
Please don’t be ashamed of how the movie touches your emotions enough to cry. That’s the magic of movies!! They help you feel. They let you know you aren’t alone and that someone has been thru something similar and you can heal from that. Music is the same way. I’ve always loved the quote “I can’t tell you how I feel but I can find a song that can” it’s the same with movies. And it changes thru life. A movie you may have not really connected with at one stage of your life could become your fav movie if you rewatch it at another stage of life. Btw love this channel keep it up!!
My friend was struggling with giving up alcohol and suffering from depression when his group therapist had them watch this movie. There is something cathartic about the roller coaster ride of emotions that allows us all to be introspective. Forrest just took life as it came and Jenny was always searching. We can all learn a valuable lesson from his honesty and love for people. I must have seen it double digit times and I still always shed a tear that's how good the screen play and the acting are. Really glad you enjoyed it. Now that you shed all those tears, you could probably use a good comedy. I highly recommend My Cousin Vinny, Galaxy Quest, or Big (if you want a little more Tom Hanks in the first role for which he was ever nominated for an Oscar).
Tom Hanks is also in 'Green Mile'. I rate it right up there with this movie. Have plenty of tissues ready. For a more light hearted movie, try 'Splash'. One of Tom Hank's first movies, it's still one of my personal favorites.
Gary Sinise (Lt. Dan) is ALSO in "THE GREEN MILE" but has a smaller part, he plays a lawyer that Hank's character goes to see him at the lawyer's home. Reactors hat have seen "Forrest Gump" first and then watch "The Green Mile" always say, during that scene, always say, "Oh LOOK, it's LT. DAN!"
This movie most real characters were jenny and dan. Its also one of the best movies dealing with child abuse and its aftermath in adulthood. As a survivor myself I completely get jenny and I wish more ppl would step out of their riotous indignation of her hurting forest to try to understand why. Child abuse at such a y0ung age warps a developing brain, Jenny's go to was always run away. Once she faced it she started to heal, but just like with addiction, a person needs to recognize therez a problem and WANT to change, not for anybody else but for themselves. It's the only way the change will stick. The song fron nf why did you leave us is another excellent example of the consequences of child abuse on the adult. It never goes away. It WILL affect everything you do, but nothing more ao than your ability tonake and maintain healthy relationships.
Those weren't fake veterans protesting the war. A lot of vets came back and protested. There is a great Tom Cruise/Oliver Stone film called BORN ON THE FOURTH OF JULY. It's a great film as well. This movie is basically capturing the spirit of the times for an entire generation.
Let's not forget another good anti-war film from late 70s: Coming Home. Jon Voight puts in a powerful performance. The soundtrack on that one is one continuous flow.
Life is like a box of chocolates is an old saying. Way before Forest Gump. I heard it said by my Mom when I was very young. I am 61 years of age now. Love this movie. Glad to see your reactions.
10/10 In my opinion, no film has touched me more than this one..... Quite simply, the greatest film ever made. Humour, sadness, action, drama and a Vietnam film all rolled into one. I'm not a stone cold, heartless villain, but it takes a lot to make me cry when I watch a movie. Bambi's mother, I couldn't care less. Jimmy Stewart in, "Oh, what a wonderful life," - yeah right! The Lion King, when Mufasa bites the big one - on the verge. But seriously - I bawled my big brown eyes out, on several occasions in this film. A real tear-jerker, and a wonderful character, played to perfection by Tom Hanks. Every bit as worthy for the Oscar as Rooney was to win the Premiership in 2007. I cannot say it enough: This is THE film of all time. Watch it, and you'll see.
Remember, Forest eluded to the feather in the wind when talking about blowing in a breeze or having a destiny or a fate. Forest's interpretation of life was "maybe both is happening at the same time". Lieutenant Dan represented a HARD expectation of fate, he yearned to die in the field of battle with honor like his Grand Fathers. Jenny represented the exact opposite, she was carefree and would hop on a random bus to take her anywhere the bus would go. Lieutenant Dan learned a harsh lesson that your fate is not in your control, and that your life will take you places that are uncertain and difficulties will be presented to you beyond your expectations. Dan wanted to die in the field because he had mentally prepared himself for it, on the opposite end Jenny lived a life of indulgence only to find poison in the well. She thought of life's problems as something to run away from instead of learning from her past. And learning to not blame herself for the harshness her father instilled in her childhood. Forest Gump represents dedication to the simple. He is simple, he is slow, and the people that judge him think that he's stupid because of it. But what he has at his core is unyielding friendship and dedication to fulfilling any promise he makes. He doesn't know his fate, but he is willing to do whatever it takes for others, even those people who don't really live up to his love. He loves them regardless, and he shows it. The moral of this story is that to be Forest Gump in action is to be virtuous and to never judge a book by its cover. This is how I see this story anyway, Great reaction guys thank you for sharing.
This is by far one of the greatest storytelling I've ever seen... I miss these extraordinary stories man. Edit: To me the braces coming off his legs it's one of the most symbolic and fantastic scenes in this movie.
1. The music rights alone must have cost a small fortune💲💲 2. Kurt Russell did the voice for Elvis. 3. IRL Sally Fields is only 10 years older than Tom Hanks. 4. Having gotten his degree Forrest would have gone into the Army as an officer like Lt. Dan. Not a recruit. His ASVAB kills that. 5. He actually saved Lt Dan twice. Once in the field and again to get him out of his post war funk and Dan turned his life around. 6. Normally an enlisted Army person would be fully aware of his/her separation date. 5. Jenny did indeed give him the best gift ever (it wasn't the shoes)😋 8. Jenny died of Hep-C from dirty needles when she was in Caliphony.. 9. It's ironic that Lt. Dan told the guys to take care of their feet because he loses his. 10. At the rally Forrest says, "Sometimes when people go to Vietnam, they go home to their mommas without any legs. Sometimes they don't go home at all. That's a bad thing. That's all I have to say about that." 11. You have had a ride through recent US history and culture. From Elvis, John Lennon, Abby Hoffman to Vietnam and Watergate. Even the jogging craze of the 70's. About the only thing left out was streaking. 13. "Sometimes I guess there're aren't enough rocks" 14. Haley Joel Osmentt/Forrest Jr. steals the show in "The Sixth Sense" with Bruce Willis. 15. Often when he's finishing a segment about death, he ends it by saying "That's all I have to say about that" 16 Keep in mind if Jenny wasn't wasting her life seeking men like her father and was with Forrest he/we wouldn't have had this incredible journey.

The feather first comes to him when he is on his way to Jenny and then it flies away when he and young Forrest gain their bond! Then i remembered the prayer that Jenny and Forrest are hiding from Jenny's dad and she prayed for God to turn her into a bird so she could fly far far away! The feather IS Jenny for me!
Jenny did not want to be in her own shoes, she was always taking them off just before a break down. Then at the marriage she was starting fresh without shoes.

He built Alabama football into a dynasty during that time.
Forrest Gump remains my all time favorite movie. I saw this when it came out, I loved it then and to this day I've watched that movie about a half dozen times, and seen all the reaction videos on CZcams to it.

My favorite movie. I don't know that I've ever seen anyone comment on this but the scene where Forrest is running from the bullies and his leg braces explode off his legs is a fantastic visual.
I love the way you actually analyze and discuss this movie instead of just saying “Thanks for watching”. Great insight about the symbolism you saw in the movie. Some things I haven’t thought of, though I’ve seen it many times. The whole deal about the shoes and running. And the feather symbolizing his whole life of going with the flow. And thanks for realizing that Jenny was the way she was because of the abuse from her dad. Some people just get angry with her for not letting Forest into her heart. But she was programmed to think she wasn’t good enough for him. Another thing I thought of is the contrasting parents. Jenny had an abusive father and Forest had a very supportive mother. Their lives took very different paths. Thanks for this reaction. Looking forward to viewing more from your channel.

These reactions never fail to amuse me in how much younger people don't know (maybe not amuse... Bewilder? Frighten?) and refuse to apply context to anything.
Don't underestimate the value in the bonuses in your dvds. In the Princess Bride they explained why Robin Wright's character, was not so useful in the fire-swamp. Forrest was not a real deep thinker, but his mum's wisdom showed him what is really important in life. So he made good choices, happenstance put him in so many significant situations, but he didn't get big headed. So we see, people are what is important, he was a good man and lived a great, productive life, even though people thought he was stoopid. Be kinder to each other, we do not know what others have been through, or if they are a valuable person, based on first impressions.
I personally love DVDs with commentary. I have learned so much from listening to commentary from directors, writers, actors and others in the movie industry.
The best movie ever. Every time I watch it, I cry as soon as I see the feather, and that beautiful tune starts. So much is packed into this movie. Every scene has so many layers to it.
Dan saying," I'm walkin here!" Is an homage from a early 70s movie, Midnight Cowboy! The words they spoke on the Dick Cavett interview show, became John Lennon's song, Imagine. Forrest's life was both Dan and momma saying. He was destined to be and do the things he did-destiny-at the same time, how he got into various situations, was the feather.

Yeah, the Lt. Dan references to being an astronaut and having legs made from "the same thing they used on the space shuttle" are particularly interesting given that both actors were in "Apollo 13" the next year.
This may be my favorite movie. I saw this in the theatre in 1994 with some co workers and now, I cannot picture Tom Hanks without the accent. Every other role he has had is in comparison to this. One of the most iconic American films ever. Dazed And Confused, was another in my top 5.

Forrest told Jenny at the gravesite he didn't know if we have a destiny or if we're just floating around on a breeze, maybe its both, then the feather fell out of his favorite book and flew away on a breeze after an entire life of creating his own destiny. Forrest (Tom Hanks) and Lt. Dan (Gary Sinese) are in three movies together and they are all great. The other two are 'The Green Mile' and 'Apollo 13'.
Forrest Gump won six Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor for Hanks, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Visual Effects, and Best Film Editing. It beat other movies in the same year like Pulp Fiction and Shawshank Redemption.

I think Forrest's most memorable line is "Is he smart?" when he's talking about little Forrest. I burst into tears every time because the character of Forrest Gump is shown to the audience in his most authentic form. Throughout the film, Forrest simply testifies and shares his story without ever saying what he really felt, but rather what he observed (he even says "That's all I have to say about that" several times when talking about deep subjects such as the death of Bubba and his mother, and his feelings about the war in Vietnam). Answering that simple question, "Is he smart?" with such care and anxiety explains the extent to which he has felt alienated from the rest of humanity and society all his life. He shows in this very brief moment how hard it is to live in his condition, even if most viewers are rather amazed by his vision and resilience throughout the film. He shows just how much he has suffered as a result of his disability, and he wouldn't want his son to suffer like he has. Thank you both for this beautiful reaction and analysis !!
Your comment about the music for this film. Actually a good story, they wanted certain moments to have a certain feel, so they threw in music that was more or less a wish list, and planned to add their own music where the artist said no or was too expensive. They started shopping the songs around, and soon the buzz for the movie and its sense of Americana began to spread, how it was not just a story about Forrest but America. Then these artists started lowering their prices and gave permission, some who even originally said no came back with a yes. IN THE END, though there were some who still bowed out, Forrest Gump got all of its wish list music
One thing a lot of younger people miss is that when Forrest runs through the football field and is recruited to play football for the University of Alabama which had a huge reputation for winning under the leadership of famous coach Bear Bryant...the guy wearing the checkered hat.
Jesus! I have never seen anyone misunderstand Jenny so much. Didn't you listen to the part about her father abusing her? She's not for the streets. Her childhood broke something in Jenny. She believes the only way to please a man is with her body. She didn't come back because Forrest has money. Forrest was her calm water in the middle of stormy seas. Every single man Jenny has spent significant time with has abused her in one way or another, except for Forrest. She runs away to protect Forrest from her. She knows Forrest loves her so much he would allow himself to be dragged down with her.
Talking about "surprised they could afford that money". It's Robert goddamn Zemekis, dude. After Back to the Future trilogy he could ask for any money he needed for his next film. And still have a line of studios, willing to give him that money.

So many metaphors in this movie. Jenny believed that running away meant safety and she taught Forest that running would save him too. Her gift to him was a pair of running shoes...ironically! He ran from the bullies and ended up in college, he ran in Vietnam and survived, he ran to cope with Jenny's inability to trust his love. Jenny spent most of her life running from her past, and the fact that she was barefoot on their wedding day seems a symbolic way to show that she finally found a sense of safety and security with Forest.

@@sebastianolivares3021 yes, good observation! I felt like the wedding scene had so much symbolism. Jenny is restored to wholeness and stands "grounded" on her bare feet, no longer running away. Forrest wears the shoes that she had given him, standing straight and sure without any sign of the childhood debility that might have held him back but for Jenny. Lt. Dan stands on "new" feet that symbolize his struggle to accept great loss, but his choice for fulfillment despite it. Dan's wife's ethnicity is something I hadn't considered; but it obviously shows that love is stronger than fear or bitterness, and that good things can come from even the hardest times. Jenny had spent her whole life metaphorically running from her emotional issues; Forrest had spent his whole life running, literally, from fear and pain. Dan didn't run at all, but stood his ground and bore the scars of it...yet, he learned to walk once more. The three characters coming all together, seemed like a way of showing that our lives may not go as we imagine or wish. Sometimes it seems unfair, and we may choose to handle that in our own individual ways. But ultimately, we will find what we need, if only we are open to receiving it. It's a magnificent movie on so many levels! Each time I watch it, I find another layer in the story and here you are, picking up on yet another detail. Thanks for that!
Because of Jenny's abuse as a child she didnt think she deserved anyone's love, especially Forrest's.

One of my favorite symbolic moments happens right after 54:40: When Forrest finishes his speech at Jenny’s grave, a flock of birds takes off from the tree, echoing her childhood wish to be turned into one so she could “fly far, far away” (from the childhood trauma that has plagued her entire life) and finally be free 🪶
If i recall correctly, the birds on the tree at the end were a complete accident/coincidence that ended in the final record.
Also the feather came to him right before Jenny finally came to be with him and it was gone again after she left this life. It was temporarily in one place, just as she was finally.
@@bamachine I like that interpretation! I also think of the feather as representing fate. At the end of the movie, Forrest questions his mom's and LT. Dan's differing perspectives on fate. Are we controlled, or just floating around on a breeze? He comes to the conclusion they were both right. The feather is floating around on the breeze, but then Forrest affects the feather by taking it with him to a place it would not have gone on its own. Then, it continues to float around once again from there. But its trajectory is altered because it's starting from a different place now. instead of from the bus top.

It develops a following after years of being out as people slowly start to watch it and develop a fanbase around it. No, a film that was a box office success, talked about by everyone upon it's release and theatrical run, which then goes on to win awards at a show watched by millions, is not a cult classic.

I love it when reactors cry, and i love that you told her "it's okay" when she said she didn't want to cry. Go ahead and let it out, you can't move forward until you allow yourself to feel your emotions. Loved y'alls reaction! And glad that you understood the character of Jenny.
Parenting is so important. He had a great supporting mother that always told he could do anything. The other way around for Jenny.
One little nitpick: this one was never a cult classic that managed to finds its audience and trascend that status. It was a straight classic from the start. It was a big studio movie with a huge budget, big name actors and a really famous director. That's how they could afford all that music and the special effects needed to insert Forrest in all that real-life historical footage. It was a huge hit when it came out and got all the accolades, including six Academy Awards in 1995, and it has stood the test of time.

Jenny knew she was a mess inside. Jenny protected forest by not getting involved with him. Until she had his baby. Which make her grow up.
Jenny is for the streets. No excuse.
She had sex with a childhood friend she knew to be mentally challenged. She then prostitutes herself until she gets pregnant and has AIDS. She just tells Forrest the kid is his because, once again, she knew he wasn't able to know better and she said she's followed him in the news so she knew he was rich.
Jenny never even wrote him when he was at war. Not once.
The excuses for her amaze me. Truly. Change the sexes and everyone would see her for what she was. An abused person who went on to abuse

@@PhuckYT12 I believe a “garbage take” would be any attempt at making Jenny redeemable throughout 95% of the movie. The idea that she was protecting Forrest is delusional and anyone who believes that has used the same excuse in their lives and have unfortunately given themselves a pass because they had “self awareness” they were toxic but they didn’t have the courage, fortitude, or compassion to be honest with the person they say they loved. I’ve been in a similar situation on the other side. The toxic partner thought they were being responsible by keeping a distance over years, idealistically dreaming of a world where they weren’t hurt and the relationship could work out. But it turns out true love is being honest with someone, and if you feel like you can’t be in a relationship, don’t sporadically pretend like you are in one. Jenny is a victim, but not a hero.

Many people dont realize just how much damage childhood SA can do to a person. Jenny is a tragic character that too many people look down on not realizing why she was the way she was.
You can empathize with a character and understand why they're behaving a certain way and still call those actions deplorable and shitty. It's not one way or the other, but I agree that people judge Jenny too harshly without considering her childhood. Tbf, her behavior is deserving of some amount of judgement, but understanding why she was behaving that way is also necessary to consider.
Jenny would be the first to admit her lifestyle was unhealthy and ended up hurting the one person who actually cared about her.
I always find Forrest Gump reactions so interesting. There are a lot of diverse opinions on the character of Jenny. But I think it is pretty straight forward when you think her entire character through and think about every scene she was in. The movie is just so fast paced and so much is happening that Jenny's desolation popping up every now and again makes her out to be a character that many look down upon. But I think shes super real.
She doesn't think she deserves Forrest. Also, the 70's were different in terms of how widespread psychology was among the population and how people process trauma etc. so it only makes sense she wouldn't know how to deal with her situation and know how to find that wake up call.
I haven't seen a single reactor really get jenny. The parallels between her and Forest. They are both running through life. Forest is running to find himself. Jenny is running to lose herself and escape her horrible past. She has probably convinced herself that it's her fault men treat her bad and does not want to get too "intimately" close to forest and risk him becoming another horrible man in her life.

To be fair I think most people that get it are those that either a)went through similar trauma themselves or b)witnessed someone go through it or know someone that went through it. Those people get Jenny. Others look down on her or just are confused by her as to why she is the way she is. But she is really just trying to heal her whole life and she never takes advantage of Forrest although her actions of course hurt him...

I actually related well to both main characters as I was socially behind (perhaps mild autism but I was never diagnosed) and was bullied daily all through elementary school while I suffered utter emotional neglect at home. The part I cry the most is when she is throwing rocks at the house and I can understand the pain she feels.
Jenny never got any of Forrest's letter because she was traveling everywhere trying to find herself. Jenny waited till Forrest stopped running everywhere before she sent him a letter. They were both on a very different journey that finally brought them together in the end.
Believe me...the studio had NO problem paying the royalties for the music in this film. It was a MAJOR production at the time...and they knew they had an Academy Award contender on their hands here. They were however, cautiously optimistic about how it would do at the box office, but it did end up being a blockbuster...as well as winning multiple Oscars! :)

Please don’t be ashamed of how the movie touches your emotions enough to cry. That’s the magic of movies!! They help you feel. They let you know you aren’t alone and that someone has been thru something similar and you can heal from that. Music is the same way. I’ve always loved the quote “I can’t tell you how I feel but I can find a song that can” it’s the same with movies. And it changes thru life. A movie you may have not really connected with at one stage of your life could become your fav movie if you rewatch it at another stage of life. Btw love this channel keep it up!!
As an a adult you should.
My friend was struggling with giving up alcohol and suffering from depression when his group therapist had them watch this movie. There is something cathartic about the roller coaster ride of emotions that allows us all to be introspective. Forrest just took life as it came and Jenny was always searching. We can all learn a valuable lesson from his honesty and love for people. I must have seen it double digit times and I still always shed a tear that's how good the screen play and the acting are. Really glad you enjoyed it.
Now that you shed all those tears, you could probably use a good comedy.
I highly recommend My Cousin Vinny, Galaxy Quest, or Big (if you want a little more Tom Hanks in the first role for which he was ever nominated for an Oscar).

Tom Hanks is also in 'Green Mile'. I rate it right up there with this movie. Have plenty of tissues ready. For a more light hearted movie, try 'Splash'. One of Tom Hank's first movies, it's still one of my personal favorites.
Cast Away was a good movie
Gary Sinise (Lt. Dan) is ALSO in "THE GREEN MILE" but has a smaller part, he plays a lawyer that Hank's character goes to see him at the lawyer's home. Reactors hat have seen "Forrest Gump" first and then watch "The Green Mile" always say, during that scene, always say, "Oh LOOK, it's LT. DAN!"
Anytime forest was daydreaming, he was always thinking of Jenny.
This movie most real characters were jenny and dan. Its also one of the best movies dealing with child abuse and its aftermath in adulthood. As a survivor myself I completely get jenny and I wish more ppl would step out of their riotous indignation of her hurting forest to try to understand why. Child abuse at such a y0ung age warps a developing brain, Jenny's go to was always run away. Once she faced it she started to heal, but just like with addiction, a person needs to recognize therez a problem and WANT to change, not for anybody else but for themselves. It's the only way the change will stick. The song fron nf why did you leave us is another excellent example of the consequences of child abuse on the adult. It never goes away. It WILL affect everything you do, but nothing more ao than your ability tonake and maintain healthy relationships.

Let's not forget another good anti-war film from late 70s: Coming Home. Jon Voight puts in a powerful performance. The soundtrack on that one is one continuous flow.

In my opinion, no film has touched me more than this one.....
Quite simply, the greatest film ever made.
Humour, sadness, action, drama and a Vietnam film all rolled into one.
I'm not a stone cold, heartless villain, but it takes a lot to make me cry when I watch a movie. Bambi's mother, I couldn't care less. Jimmy Stewart in, "Oh, what a wonderful life," - yeah right! The Lion King, when Mufasa bites the big one - on the verge.
But seriously - I bawled my big brown eyes out, on several occasions in this film. A real tear-jerker, and a wonderful character, played to perfection by Tom Hanks. Every bit as worthy for the Oscar as Rooney was to win the Premiership in 2007.
I cannot say it enough: This is THE film of all time. Watch it, and you'll see.

Kinda sad how the younger generation now thinks this movie is some form of propaganda and lacks any kind of heart. Shameful. I love this movie.
Remember, Forest eluded to the feather in the wind when talking about blowing in a breeze or having a destiny or a fate. Forest's interpretation of life was "maybe both is happening at the same time". Lieutenant Dan represented a HARD expectation of fate, he yearned to die in the field of battle with honor like his Grand Fathers. Jenny represented the exact opposite, she was carefree and would hop on a random bus to take her anywhere the bus would go. Lieutenant Dan learned a harsh lesson that your fate is not in your control, and that your life will take you places that are uncertain and difficulties will be presented to you beyond your expectations. Dan wanted to die in the field because he had mentally prepared himself for it, on the opposite end Jenny lived a life of indulgence only to find poison in the well. She thought of life's problems as something to run away from instead of learning from her past. And learning to not blame herself for the harshness her father instilled in her childhood.
Forest Gump represents dedication to the simple. He is simple, he is slow, and the people that judge him think that he's stupid because of it. But what he has at his core is unyielding friendship and dedication to fulfilling any promise he makes. He doesn't know his fate, but he is willing to do whatever it takes for others, even those people who don't really live up to his love. He loves them regardless, and he shows it.
The moral of this story is that to be Forest Gump in action is to be virtuous and to never judge a book by its cover.

This is by far one of the greatest storytelling I've ever seen... I miss these extraordinary stories man.
Edit: To me the braces coming off his legs it's one of the most symbolic and fantastic scenes in this movie.
Especially with the music when he takes off and it's just dirt flying... I get so emotional;(

3. IRL Sally Fields is only 10 years older than Tom Hanks.
4. Having gotten his degree Forrest would have gone into the Army as an officer like Lt. Dan. Not a recruit. His ASVAB kills that.
5. He actually saved Lt Dan twice. Once in the field and again to get him out of his post war funk and Dan turned his life around.
6. Normally an enlisted Army person would be fully aware of his/her separation date.

“Forrest Gump” is truly a masterpiece it’s like 4 movies wrapped into one a comedy,romance,drama & action movie. I do want to say your feather analogy is spot on and also this film is Top 5 Greatest Films to ever be made just by the simple message keep running no matter what life changing moments you run into and it’s remarkable almost how Forrest lived a life that many dream of and will never get to live all by having a below average IQ of 75 this film i can’t put into words every time I watch it I get emotional no matter what the only other movie that makes me do that is Titanic oh and Denzel Washington’s “John Q”😌✍🏽✨💯
The feather first comes to him when he is on his way to Jenny and then it flies away when he and young Forrest gain their bond! Then i remembered the prayer that Jenny and Forrest are hiding from Jenny's dad and she prayed for God to turn her into a bird so she could fly far far away! The feather IS Jenny for me!
This film isn’t a cult classic, but was actually a box office hit, and one of the biggest films of the 90s. That’s why it’s quoted so often.
Jenny did not want to be in her own shoes, she was always taking them off just before a break down. Then at the marriage she was starting fresh without shoes.

It was real footage of George Wallace in front of the University of Alabama. The coach for Alabama in this movie was an actor portraying the legendary Alabama football coach Bear Bryant. He built Alabama football into a dynasty during that time.
Forrest Gump remains my all time favorite movie. I saw this when it came out, I loved it then and to this day I've watched that movie about a half dozen times, and seen all the reaction videos on CZcams to it.
This movie has so many layers. Always thought it was a good study on how people deal with trauma.

Those weren't people just dressed up as soldiers, they were real veterans that came back from Vietnam and took part in the protests against the war.

Hey JulioCesarAvila2741! Forrest Gump is such an Emotional movie, and I LOVE how Forrest showed the upmost loyalty to those closest to him! I think that is a character quality we can all admire, and try to apply in our own lives! For me Personally, I often connect with this movie because my brother actually has Autism (So Forrest and my brother can relate a bit since they are both disabled).
I also just wanted to mention that I actually posted a video on my CZcams channel that is almost like a tribute video to Forrest Gump (though I called it a Mashup). You see, there's a band named Family Of The Year, and they used their hit song "Hero" for Richard Linklater's 2014 movie called Boyhood. For my video, I used "Hero" as background music while showing various scenes from Forrest Gump.

My favorite movie. I don't know that I've ever seen anyone comment on this but the scene where Forrest is running from the bullies and his leg braces explode off his legs is a fantastic visual.
I love the way you actually analyze and discuss this movie instead of just saying “Thanks for watching”. Great insight about the symbolism you saw in the movie. Some things I haven’t thought of, though I’ve seen it many times. The whole deal about the shoes and running. And the feather symbolizing his whole life of going with the flow. And thanks for realizing that Jenny was the way she was because of the abuse from her dad. Some people just get angry with her for not letting Forest into her heart. But she was programmed to think she wasn’t good enough for him. Another thing I thought of is the contrasting parents. Jenny had an abusive father and Forest had a very supportive mother. Their lives took very different paths. Thanks for this reaction. Looking forward to viewing more from your channel.

Don't underestimate the value in the bonuses in your dvds. In the Princess Bride they explained why Robin Wright's character, was not so useful in the fire-swamp.
Forrest was not a real deep thinker, but his mum's wisdom showed him what is really important in life. So he made good choices, happenstance put him in so many significant situations, but he didn't get big headed. So we see, people are what is important, he was a good man and lived a great, productive life, even though people thought he was stoopid. Be kinder to each other, we do not know what others have been through, or if they are a valuable person, based on first impressions.
I personally love DVDs with commentary. I have learned so much from listening to commentary from directors, writers, actors and others in the movie industry.
The best movie ever. Every time I watch it, I cry as soon as I see the feather, and that beautiful tune starts. So much is packed into this movie. Every scene has so many layers to it.
Forrest Gump is such a wonderful movie. Beautifully written, the acting is incredible, music is perfect. It's just so good.
Dan saying," I'm walkin here!" Is an homage from a early 70s movie, Midnight Cowboy! The words they spoke on the Dick Cavett interview show, became John Lennon's song, Imagine. Forrest's life was both Dan and momma saying. He was destined to be and do the things he did-destiny-at the same time, how he got into various situations, was the feather.
You cannot hold back tears with this film. That is why it is such a great movie.

This may be my favorite movie. I saw this in the theatre in 1994 with some co workers and now, I cannot picture Tom Hanks without the accent. Every other role he has had is in comparison to this. One of the most iconic American films ever. Dazed And Confused, was another in my top 5.

Hey mikefetterman6782! Forrest Gump is such a special movie to me for many reasons, but I think it is VERY Impressive how it feels like a Coming-Of-Age movie, a Comedy movie, a Drama movie, a Romance movie, and a War movie, all at the same time! And for me Personally, I often connect with this movie because my brother actually has Autism (So Forrest and my brother can relate a bit since they are both disabled).
I also just wanted to mention that I actually posted a video on my CZcams channel that is almost like a tribute video to Forrest Gump (though I called it a Mashup). You see, there's a band named Family Of The Year, and they used their hit song "Hero" for Richard Linklater's 2014 movie called Boyhood. For my video, I used "Hero" as background music while showing various scenes from Forrest Gump.

Forrest told Jenny at the gravesite he didn't know if we have a destiny or if we're just floating around on a breeze, maybe its both, then the feather fell out of his favorite book and flew away on a breeze after an entire life of creating his own destiny.
Forrest (Tom Hanks) and Lt. Dan (Gary Sinese) are in three movies together and they are all great. The other two are 'The Green Mile' and 'Apollo 13'.
Forrest isn't overthinking he's just in the moment. He has the power of good habit. Life is a journey of ups and downs.

I think Forrest's most memorable line is "Is he smart?" when he's talking about little Forrest. I burst into tears every time because the character of Forrest Gump is shown to the audience in his most authentic form. Throughout the film, Forrest simply testifies and shares his story without ever saying what he really felt, but rather what he observed (he even says "That's all I have to say about that" several times when talking about deep subjects such as the death of Bubba and his mother, and his feelings about the war in Vietnam). Answering that simple question, "Is he smart?" with such care and anxiety explains the extent to which he has felt alienated from the rest of humanity and society all his life. He shows in this very brief moment how hard it is to live in his condition, even if most viewers are rather amazed by his vision and resilience throughout the film. He shows just how much he has suffered as a result of his disability, and he wouldn't want his son to suffer like he has. Thank you both for this beautiful reaction and analysis !!
Your comment about the music for this film. Actually a good story, they wanted certain moments to have a certain feel, so they threw in music that was more or less a wish list, and planned to add their own music where the artist said no or was too expensive. They started shopping the songs around, and soon the buzz for the movie and its sense of Americana began to spread, how it was not just a story about Forrest but America. Then these artists started lowering their prices and gave permission, some who even originally said no came back with a yes. IN THE END, though there were some who still bowed out, Forrest Gump got all of its wish list music

One thing a lot of younger people miss is that when Forrest runs through the football field and is recruited to play football for the University of Alabama which had a huge reputation for winning under the leadership of famous coach Bear Bryant...the guy wearing the checkered hat.
Jesus! I have never seen anyone misunderstand Jenny so much. Didn't you listen to the part about her father abusing her? She's not for the streets. Her childhood broke something in Jenny. She believes the only way to please a man is with her body. She didn't come back because Forrest has money. Forrest was her calm water in the middle of stormy seas. Every single man Jenny has spent significant time with has abused her in one way or another, except for Forrest. She runs away to protect Forrest from her. She knows Forrest loves her so much he would allow himself to be dragged down with her.
