Forever in my mind is this band (sans singer) playing at Harvard U. in 2001.I went with a friend who would be dead in months from Brain Cancer-he knew it, and came to the show anyway (his idea!) During an AMAZING performance, he leaned over, in pain, and said, 'I'm so glad you are here with me hearing this." I'm still getting misty-eyed thinking about it..Shakti and Martin Baker are forever fused together in my mind. RIP brother, 10/8/2001.12 years feels like 2 weeks. Thank U for posting this!
thank you for posting even if I read it 7 years later , very moving testimony ♥
great.. RIP that great musical soul
Damn I was at school there at the time and am bummed I missed it! Saw John Scofield but would have loved to have seen this John!
had this happen in´s cool. have had xps. doubt its ´´the final´´ bözz ^^ ?
Very heartfelt words, thanks for sharing with us
Music has no religion, no racism, no bias, no country: it is soul itself
Absolutely!❤
Wonderfully put!
🕉 ✨️ 💖
This concert is a hallmark of human achievement ……….ten years later I keep coming back to it
So sad to note that U Srinivas on the mandolin passed away yesterday in Chennai, India. RIP Srinivas, you will will sorely missed but never forgotten.
Hi didn't look that old
What a beautiful musician Shrinivas was. Sublime.
He was a wonderful musician. His playing on the ‘Floating Point’ album is outstanding. He is in Shiva’s arms now. R.I.P.
With a blink of Shiva's eye Srinivas came forth, gave us pure manifestation of sound, music to our ears, and was gone. But we still have the material recordings to supplement the akashic trails. !Om Shanti Om!
I did not know ..Sad...
Goddamn.
John Mclaughlin is so fucking special.
There is not a soul out there that could pull off this group of people co-operating to play weird transcultural music that they all believe in.
The mutual respect is amazing.
You can see he's fully into it and so is everyone in the band. The cohesion is amazing.
Anytime anyone tells you the world divides down racial lines punch them in the face (EDit: OK don't. Just admonish them. Maybe that's enough.) and then show them this.
We truly are One people.
I just lose it watching John. He's the real deal spiritual musician.
Luv and Peace.
Thanks! I have written the beginning of each piece as I was listening:
0:00 Caruna
15:55 Introduction of musicians
19:00 Manopa
29:00 Sahki
41:22 Giriras Sudha
legend!
Somewhere around the 3:00 mark, Caruna transitions into another song, 5 Peace Band. 5 Peace Band usually lasts 10 or 11 minutes or so.
Thank you!

U Srinivas had such an amazing talent; such a unique take on mandolin playing. I am always blown away by what he played. I'm sad I never got to see him live, but thankful that he existed and was recorded.
This has to be one of the greatest live performances ever!
Start at 27:15, and just wait for John's utter amazement and shocked head-shake at 27:40, reacting to U Srinivas's stunning virtuosity. Priceless.
If there's one emotion for Shakti and Remember Shakti, it is Joy. The musicians are so happy and enjoy creating it lights up our days.
what a wonderful combination, never before .It is so faaaaantaaastic.I deeply regret the sad demise of legend U.Srinivas.But he will live forever with his mandoline in everybody's heart of hearts.May his soul rest in Mandoline.
Es gibt für mich kein interessanters Instrument als die Tabla und das Spiel dieses herrlichen Instrumentes zu erlernen sowie zu beherrschen. Wow
This guys play Dream Theater for warm up! So much felling and technic together! Awesome!!!
Year now: 2023. Can't get tired of listening and sppreciating this wonderful concert.
These musicians are all masters. I saw Ravi Shankar before he passed away and his daughter Anushka played with him. Indian music has always fascinated me. John is the only fusion player that can play this style. He is very unique slong with all these musicians. A rare perfection in these styles. Bravo!
The more I listen to this, the more it becomes absorbed into my DNA.
THE ULTIMATE TRUTH :-)
Alleles (>o>)
48:18 genius! the cut off one note each time making the run shorter and shorter till it just ends. hahah
That is so cool!
krävteyy
U Srinivas
@Michael Lachlan no one gives a shit about you, your imaginary girlfriend, or instagram
To you who originally uploaded this, Blessings & Thanks!
Thanx for posting!
Radhekrishna, music has no religion. hindu muslim christian unity concert. The music alone can unite us. see the unity of joy and tremendous effort to play like this. AMAZING! truely no words. but we miss you srinivas very much to see such a wonderful vedios. A HUMBLE SALUTE TO ALL THE MUSICIANS. SRINIVAS WE LOVE YOU WHEREVER YOU ARE! IT IS EASY FOR THE GROUP TO PLAY LIKE THIS BUT DIFFICULT FOR US TO DIGEST. WONDERFUL!
It's 2021 and I'm still listening to this masterpiece ♥️
Me too!
👍
2023 now still going
OMG....some of the best in Indian classical music (both Carnatic and Hindustani) with Western.. This is it!!
The eyes of the musicians say it all. Hussain and Selvaganesh communicate amazingly during percussion breaks and the ebbs.
Music is NAAD BRAHMA, sound of God,no mood is difficult to be lifted up,its healing, its energising, its magnificent, the magical fingers on Tabla,Mandolin,Guitar ,Ghatam and the vocal make listening a pleasure, sublime music ,music is the only language which forebodes any barrier, without borders, without differentiation,a language even the deaf will relate to,let us enjoy without creating a divide, unite and enjoy
It is at moments like this that I find technology a blessing. That I can sit at home and find this extraordinary music. And then play it through my quality sound system. God Bless ! CZcams for being here and ktroxie for posting this. The later two songs are simply transcendent. Srinivas's playing is extraordinary and JM's licks are among his most delicious. His solo on Sakhi makes his syn guitar an instrument of holiness. We are fortunate beings who find this.
They sit there comfortably and play just as if nothing had happened.
THIS CONCERT SIMPLY STAGGERING THE LEVEL OF JOY THAT IS SIMPLY VISIBLE THAT GIFT OF SHARING JOY AND UNDERSTANDING.....THE SOUND THE ALL SPIRITS ARE UNITED.... IT'S..BEING ON A DIFFERENT LEVEL..... WORTH LIFE ITSELF
Saw this line up at London's Royal Festival Hall November 2013. By light years the most amazing performance I have witnessed by any musicians. RIP Srinivas.
This is 'Remember Shakti'. I saw this band at the Royal Festival Hall London last November and they were without doubt the finest band I have ever heard or seen. You have to experience this live to get the full impact. They are beyond the ability to play an instrument to the point where they are playing music. Look at the way they are communicating with each other.
John, forever in a state of grace, its nice to hear these great musicians.
Phenomenal stuff - I think Srinivas on mandolin is the sweet icing on the cake.
I am so lucky can hear the music today. 2019
This is Magic beyond words. Love and respect from #Pakistan
What a terrible loss to lose u Srinivas at only 45 yr old. The joy with which he payed shines through.
Damn those vocals and altered chords at the beginning give me goosebumps everytime
mandolin Srini is such a beauty! That Hamsadhwani interlude he plays in Sakhi is so incredible!
Much respect to Mr McLauglhin and all on stage (Y)
Saw him live in Norfolk VA 1977 totally enchanted . His guitar was made in heaven he just strums is without thought. Totally spiritual
This sound is a form of fusion, melding genres from everywhere. Over the last 50 years the music world has been morphing from a local/nationalistic tempo and style to a global and human-holistic and inclusive sound. Most of my life (when it comes to music) I have been hoping and expecting this trend. Besides our intellectual acuity, our ability for music singles us out as truly unique and may be the only instrument for human peace.
Awesome! I saw the original Shakti band at a university gig in the 1970s. They were terrific then and they still are. A truly great upload-thanks a lot!
Saw them in Berkeley university 1974. Fantastic!
i was there in 2004...my best souvenir of concert !!!! wonderful!!!!

The joy of the musicians is wonderful. JM is the best musician of all time.
The starting 15 mins was truly HEAVEN 🫡🥹😇
THE SECOND PIECE ABSOLUTELY IN ANOTHER REALM ....JOHN THAT SOUND THAT MEETING OF THEIR SPIRITS.... SIMPLY BLISSFUL
fantastic music but more is to the joy of these musicians enjoying themselves while delivering this masterpiece.. pure joy indeed
At the end of this concert I was literally reduced to tears as the beauty of the music and the joy of the musicians performing it exuded through time and space. Thanks for sharing your soul and spirit ... and this recording. Waiting to find this on CD too.
Shakti is reuniting (sadly, without Shankar; but there is a supreme violinist playing) in 2023!
For concerts, first
In India 🇮🇳, then
Europe 🇪🇺 and
America 🇺🇸
1973--2023
Shakti: creative, ecstatic, blissful energy ✨️
🕉 gratitude 🙏 beloved 💖 ones
waiting eagerly for it
I've watched this video a dozen times or more and I NEVER get tired of it. Two of my heroes: John McLaughlin and Zakir Hussein. As a percussionist for about 45 years, I am fascinated...
The last 10 seconds was sheer magic! The applause will never end. Mandolin Srinivas!!!
Hey Sri just watched the video and filled with tears. Thanks for sharing.
Indeed Sai.... Check out some of the other gems of the maestro that I have shared.. He was colossal talent!
I am just amazed how Shankar Mahadevan age was how different he used toh look😮
This is superbly ecstatic! RIP the legend U.Srinivas.
Love and respect to "The 5 Peace band".
Thanks for the Best! Shakti is and always will be my comfort zone. What a Treat!!!
Listen to that singer. He is amazing. All of them are amazing.
Peter Saunders yeah. He's Shankar Mahadevan 🙏🏽
Definitely among the greatest live performances in the world !!
oh the absolute pleasure and joy to have finally heard them live
Wowwww magnifique ensemble de musiciens talentueux et le chanteur a une voix d'une pureté et d'une puissance incroyables et en matière de musique je suis fan des mariages atypiques félicitations à vous tous
There's so many things about JM performing with Indian musicians but I just love the mutual respect and love you see between all of them.
it feels like the shower of music all over the world....
what a work... salute the legends...speechless
The mighty fine and wonderful Johnny Mac doing what he does best, simply making music that is always light years ahead and beyond what anyone else can even dream of. I mean this man has turned music around a number of times, and no matter which direction he chooses to go he always comes up with another plateau for us mortals to dream about.I think the song Chuck Berry made all those years ago was a proclamation of what was to come,Johnny B.Goode,or Johnny go go go.The master of masters.
And the 164 of you who voted thumbs down, well, there should you lead the way. On this world, it doesn't get more spiritual or more unified. That we ever hear this is only but a blessing and a gift. Selah
You guys are playing now in Brazil, I send the video there for a few good friends I have still. Beautifull and soulful music. When I listen to something of this magnitude I believe that God is manifesting itself through men.
0:00 Caruna
12:00 change of tempo
15:55 Introduction of musicians
19:00 Manopa
29:00 Sahki
41:22 Giriras Sudha
Absolutely superlative... a performance that is spellbinding!!!
Glad to live at a time of these great musicians.
I love Shakti. Incredible music and performance, sheer creativity and the power that shows how music can transcend and fuse so beautifully in terms of culture are only side issues which are overshadowed by the beauty and majesty of this great spirit of music, which "speaks the unspeakable" and allows you to be transparent to the transcendent.
more divine than human, this performance
Thank you very much for posting this marvelous concert!
While viewing tabla lessons, I came across Zakir Hussain's clips, including this achingly beautiful concert with John McLaughlin's band, my favorite guitarist. This is a tearfully beautiful concert...
50 minutes of happiness ! Thank you!
fantastic music but more is to the joy of these musicians enjoying themselves while delivering this masterpiece.. pure joy indeed

Speechless, it’s been a while that any music has moved me this much
Those complaining about the choices of cameraman and editors probably forget that this was not meant to be televised and the editor is probably using footage shot during live performances to be projected on the big screen. Since the audience is already getting a view of entire group it explains the strange choice of closeups only. But this music is for soul close your eyes and nothing is distracting.
RIP Mandolin Srinivas.
All are maestros....the great U. Sriniwas is no more. I've had the pleasure of seeing them ( Shakti ) live 3 times.
Magical...out of the World...and playing the TABLA with one hand....incredible Zakeer Sir...legendary....maestros together...hats off....
What amazing music, what talent. A whole different world combining the ancient and the cutting edge of music from different cultures. Thanks to John McLaughlin for opening my eyes (and ears) to those wonders.
This is the power of heaven coming on us through the sacred musicians! Thank them so much!!!
What a beautiful piece by these exquisite musicians.
this is my favourite concert till date..
Incroyable! Pure joy to watch these musicians!
Never underestimate the power and beauty of the human will
It's such a joy to listen to the wonderful music these magnificent musicians create, out of this world.
Zakir Hussain and Selvaganesh: Pure Time Benders
Very beautiful music. Just heard that young Srinivas died. How sad. He was one of the great musicians of our ages. Right up there with Clapton, Coltrane, and Hendrix. At least for us Westerners, there are three really great Indian music geniuses: Shankar then Zakir H. then Srininvas. His music touched souls around the world. He still touches mine.
freaking amazing!!!
tears of joy and of admiration for their humbleness.
we need more human beings like these.
Zakir Hussain is incredible. I was blessed to him see him live in 2011.
I heard his father, Alla Rakha, the great. Zakir is the great son of a very great father.
What a marvelous program. Unforgettable.
Bless all you guys for keeping this extraordinary experience alive !
That voice, wow, was like another language, one may not understand the exact words but the feeling, the passion comes thru...Thanks! :)
he is Shankar mahadevan one of the versatile singer from India
