I believe he didn’t have any intention to express hates or like, just shared his nearly-died experience responding to such question. At least, he seemed to carefully choose his words and he would have felt sorry if somebody felt sadness or hurt from his selection of this topic and reference to the name of the country.

And eating unfamiliar food too much upset his body system terribly (yes it can happen to our body, same thing happened to a friend of mine when we worked together a few years before.
