A seriously stressful event. My little Mavic Pro by DJI flew away today... I figured I might experience a drone loss at some point, so I am typically rather cautious in my flights.
I never expected to have this happen so early in my drone career.
I have heard of many people who have lost their drones or had a Phantom or Mavic fly away... but really thought I could be the exception to that.

What a stressful and heartbreaking night that was.
Have you ever lost an item that you love?
Leave it in the comments below!
A happy ending, nice! ^_^
As a last effort, I was about to suggest that you should ask the owner of the farm if they had found a drone in their field.
Super lucky! I'm glad that you found it.
I've lost many books over the years, I couldn't recover not even one so I have to buy them again eventually; although some were very rare and weren't printed again.
I've also lost so many earphones, at this point I only use the expensive ones on my home.
will be devastating for me enough if I were to lose my Spark. A Mavic pro hell NO! So relief to know you found it and with no damage. PHEW!
I lost control of my drone in a strong breeze and I had to trespass in a paddock full of horses and horse shit to find it. Was just about to give up when I found it!
Tokyo Lens just did 2 days ago bought my second drone 3rd flight it fly away
I raised my mavic about 100m high at the beach and it just went out to sea by itself. I had no control over it. Somehow it came back after 20 minutes and landed with a minute battery left. Scary shit.
it just wanted some open air
The return to home got activated when the battery got low
Fantastic! I'm so glad you found it, and it is working. Hooray!!!!!
I love this video and your positivity. I just had to subscribe! Merry Christmas!!!!
Aw, its like it was waiting for you to come get it, hovering there hopefully!
I love stories that end on a positive note. Congrats on finding it. I hope I never have to go through what you did. Thank you for sharing.
Yay! Glad u found it!!! And awesome u didn't give up! And being in those stressful moments makes us stronger! Helps us see that we can overcome it some way or another! I'm so glad u found it!!😄
Way to just never give up Norm!! Nice going bud!
So glad you found it, awesome.
Good video. Glad you got your mavic back. I have over a dozen quads [including the mavic] and I have lost more than my share [including one of my phantoms]. Most was due to careless on my part and others from equipment malfunction. With this hobby there is always the chance of losing an aircraft. Always be psychologically prepared just in case.
Been there before. So happy you found it because I know the feeling
lol aww. did you find yours?
Great story line. Happy to see you found it!
Happy for you, you found your Mavic again! Stay positive!
Man I had the perfect line too, “alas poor Mavic, we knew it well” glad you found it. I seriously want to get one now.
Wow, I am glad you found your drone at last. Keep up with your work. Well done
oh wow!!! I'm so glad you didnt lose it!! I think persistence is def the motto of your whole channel!!
I am so glad you found your drone.... I no it was some time ago but I am interested to no do you still fly in the wind...💨
good work! that drone footage is quite spectacular and offers an unique point of view that would have been missed. looking forward to the next vid!
I'm happy for you Norm. Don't give up
Good lesson! And glad you found it.
What a relief to get one of your most valued tools back! I'm not so sure I would have coped as well as you did in the same situation
I'm happy you found it
DANG! What a story! Glad it worked out. 👍
Thank goodness for GPS! Can't say I would've been able to figure out the radius like you did (cannot math past basic adding/subtracting/multiplying/dividing), but that was amazing! And there wasn't any damage? Even more amazing! ^_^The toy I loved the most as a child was this Santa Pillow my mom had made from some material she got on sale at a craft store. I had cuddled up to sleep every night with that pillow since I was a toddler, so the pillow was well loved (or quite worn out) by the time I was in the third grade. It literally fell apart the last time it went through the washer and dryer and the fabric was too worn to be repaired another time, so it unfortunately got thrown away. I cried myself to sleep for weeks after that.
I'm happy you found her!! I was celebrating with you! lol
Omg i was really scared that it was gone forever but now I'm so happy that you have it back😄😀 btw I love your videos💗
I felt really happy when you found your drone!!!
Trust me... so did I lol
Wow, what an outcome, you must be delighted 😁
Glad you didn't give up and found it... Maybe try to find another one that can handle some wind in the future, but use this one too but now you know the wind was to strong and won.. Glad it landed nice and still works. Happy for you and awesome shots you did get even though the wind took it away.
Omg i am So happy that you found it! Your stress and sleepless night was Not for nothing☺️
So glad you found your Mavic unharmed! But watching the footage and seeing just how crazy the winds were (reminded me of hurricane winds) , I wouldn't have flown mine in those conditions. But all's well that ends well!
right?? me too!
and yea, those were insane winds!
didnt expect that till I got above the treeline lol, and it was too late then~
Thank you
Glad for a happy ending! And it’s great to see that your positivity has persevered over the last 5 years and I’m glad you don’t gloss over or sugarcoat the bad, but in recognizing the bad, we can appreciate to good so much more
Good for you Bud, as a fellow Mavic Pro owner, I know what you must have felt when you noticed it.
I know how you feel. I lost my first drone in the snow and never found it. I went back later and still nothing.
Your recovery steps were obviously the key to finding the drone. Thank you for the steps, hopefully none of us will have to use them. 😎
I'm so stoked for you!
Glad you found it that's a good job
gaaad daamn! i had a little heart attack for you
Hah that’s awesome man!
I was stressed just imagining that you lost an expensive piece of equipment. I’m truly glad you didn’t give up.
Thank god, Good job 😀
Hi Norm!
Such a shame that you lost a high quality drone and gave you a shock, wind is always a pain! I feel for you losing something you make great use of and it always feels like its your fault for losing something when its not fully your fault. Happy end that you didn't give up and managed to find it though! I can't say I've lost anything meaningful to me (thankfully) but I have lost many things that I use quite often (phones, wallets, laptops etc) but just mistakes I have to push on from.
Glad to see that you found it! It would now be a good idea maybe to make a video on when some body looses their drone on how to locate it by all the information available within the whole package on how to find it! And recover it!
That I think would be very welcome and maybe give new pilots a little more confidence!
I will be subscribing and give ya the big thumbs up!
Awesome stuff you are able to find her :D
I have lots os friends that lost / damaged their Mavic's , some of them two years ago, when they were even more expensive . Now, they are using the Phantom, and it is as good as .
Yay the drone was located!!
Nice it all worked out in the end!
As an RC pilot i totally get you on losing your quad. Glad you gave it the last fleeting search, and were successful.
Happy ending story, glad you found it.
u r lucky guy, ur drone landing on open area, and it's easy to find and pick
I felt your joy in finding her...yay!!! I lost a graduation necklace that was a gift from my mom and to this day it saddens me and that was over 20yrs ago. What would be your advice on dealing with a negitive person if you could not advoid them? Love your energy in all your videos.
Actually I have something like that too.
My grandfather gave me a 4-leaf clover when I was young, and I lost it.
Its been well over 20 years since that loss, and still bothers me to this day.
As for dealing with negative people. I just let them vent and try not to shove too much positivism in their face~
It usually helps me to find at least 1 thing that I love about that person even if I don't know them, and focus on that. I find it makes me feel a little more empathetic.
Maybe I'll cover this in a Q&A!
Tokyo Lens I would like it if you addressed this in a Q&A I am always open to suggestions.
Yay, a happy ending!
I once lost this adorable stuffed animal kitten I took 😳 from in front of my neighbors house. She was upset with me for taking it and I still feel bad and miss that kitten to this day.
I also lost a baby pony toy when I was younger at the movie theatre my mom worked at. Very minor things, but it was still a sad day!
Loved the video as always!
ありがとうございます!😁
I was not expecting that!! I just witnessed every stage of grief 😩
"We progress through error". Err, and determination! After the initial error I believe you did exactly the RIGHT thing. It's probably the trees that blocked the signal and thankfully it did n't (was n't set?) to try and fly back to launch position. Maybe fit a small gps tracker? Once the drone battery is exhausted telemetry is lost. See 'Ian in London'. Thank you VERY much for posting and I wish you and your subscribers a very happy New Year. Bob.
I can imagine the hopelessness you felt, but im glad you didn't give up! I totally understand that you felt an attachment to it -- honestly I was so invested in this video that I felt attached to it too! 🤣
Another reminder to never give up!
Hi, i lost mine also and cant find it. How did you do to calculate ? i have the last gps position and i also have the flight record.
Glad you found it.are you Amis
that wind is CRAZY!!! how you flew in that is beyond me..
This is what the function “ find my drone “ is for in the app , gives u exact gps location and even turns into a sat nav to guide u there , u can also get it to bleep and flash its lights 👍
Hi Norm!
🍙
What a sad video! I'm so glad things worked out in the end!
Unless I missed it, you didn't say what your setting was for "Remote Controller Signal Lost". Usually it's "Return to Home". During your emergency landing when it lost signal, I am surprised it didn't try to climb and come home. Thereby, getting blown more down wind. Sounds like you were lucky and had it set to Hover. Congrats on finding it !! That's awesome. When you tested it, I smiled when I noticed how strong the winds were again (trees blowing) and couldn't help but notice the power lines overhead.
Yeah I'd like to know what his setting was on too, but I guess he had it to hover, in which case he was lucky it wasn't RTH.
Unless he had change it the default action when signal is lost is RTH. I wonder if the drone did not try to return home because he had ordered it to land.
It was never coming back on RTH, it got into this situation due to the wind, and RTH would not overcome this, in fact best is manual in sport mode.
He did the right thing, find a safe spot and try to land.
Nice result.
He said in the video he had it set to land
🎉congrats on finding it🎉
Dude, from the way your antennas were positioned on your transmitter after you found your Mavic may have been part of the problem. I believe they should be facing out at about 45 degrees. Yours were facing each other.
For sure I’ve lost something I love! A camera with my first kid’s big moments as an infant fell out of the diaper bag at the zoo. No dice finding it the next day.
Glad u got it back i own 3 dji and absolutely would hate if any of my lil guys gets lost
Awesome video. I could tell it wasnt staged and felt your panic and stress. How u had the hold it together attitude to record your finding it...ill never know? I wouldve freaked out and ran in circles till i found it. But you fairly calmly recorded the whole situation. Very well done!!!!
Nice relax go Fly 😳😁🤙🏼
I think its time for some blinkin LED strips, GPS trackers, and all the bells and whistles!
Loved the shots at the end that show how it went down!
It's coming. Technology is evolving. They may come with beacon signal in the future. Requested that already to dji.
Lucky lad! :)
You know, I think many pilots need to make this experience to check wind speeds before they go flying.
I recommend the UAV Forecast app, since it is usually accurate and gives you wind speeds at different altitudes.
Extra tip: You can fly the Mavic at wind speeds up to ~40 km/h, with gusts even faster (technically even more, but you really don't want to do that), but everything above 30 km/h is pretty sketchy and not good for shooting footage.
Google can also give good weather information, but don't forget that it will only show ground speed, meaning up to 10m altitude. And believe me, above that the wind speeds get faster really quickly.
In case you're interested, I'll leave a story about a similar incident I had with a Phantom 3 under this thread.
So, for a while, I had been using the Phantom 3 SE (eventually, the video downlink got fucked and never worked above 200m distance, I'm not using it anymore since DJI couldn't fix it).
I had bought the Argtek antenna upgrade kit and installed it, and went out for a range test. At that point, I didn't know yet that the Argtek kit had a loose internal connector that would require shaking and luck to get reconnected. I also made the mistake to do this on a day where I had to launch with the wind, meaning the return would be against it.
When I was about 2km out and 100m high, all of a sudden I lost connection. Unable to get it back, I got a bit worried, but I realized the drone would initiate RTH and come back. However, looking at the wind turbines that are about 1km from our house, I could see that the wind at higher levels (~100m, where the drone was) was picking up. A lot.
So I jumped on my bicycle with the controller and cell phone in my hand and went out in the direction where I had been flying. At that point, I got lucky. A little over 100m away from the house, I got reconnected to the drone that was still almost a kilometer away and that had been bravely, yet slowly fighting the wind.
I immediately reduced the altitude to reduce the wind resistance, but it was clear that I didn't have enough battery level to make it back. All I could do is get the drone closer to the drone and land in a field.
Having the location, I then set out ony my bicycle to rescue the drone. This was particularly difficult because I went on the wrong field at first, to the point where I could see the drone but there was a trench between me and it, and I had to go back, crossing an entire muddy field - again - only to go to the next field and finally get the drone.
I was still pretty lucky, though: The only remains of the incident were small stains of mud on the landing gear and on the bottom of the camera, I could clean them off easily.
But believe me when I say that it really gets your heart pounding when you have several hundred euros flying 100 meters high, 2 kilometers away, knowing they have to fight the wind and not hearing back for more than 10 minutes (when you only have 20 minutes flight time in total and already used more than 5 on your way out).
I really thought I had fucked up at first.
Never give up! 😍
Loving your vlogs, great camera footage, well chuffed you found it. Can’t wait to visit Tokyo.
So happy you found it! I would have been manic!
We'll done, buzzing for you 👍
Next time, no drones when Totoro is summoning the Neko Bus.
how do you calculate the radius of the crash ? for the m2p
I don't have a Mavic Pro yet, but I'm buying one from a friend for $600. He's never really used it, and his wife confirms that. What a God send that looks like for me, but I don't wanna lose it or crash it either. I recently purchased a Marco Polo after doing a lot of research and it really works well. Not nearly as well in a grove of trees, but there's ways of gridding out your search and/or getting close to the GPS point like you did. It would have helped you find it faster, but thank God you found it and didn't give up. Merry Christmas. Marc Trainor.
i know this is old now. there is a find my drone feature in the djigo app that would have probably walked you right to your drone. it shows the drones last connected location in case of a loss.
No way you found the drone! I’m so glad you were able to get it it back! And it still works! Must’ve had some green Monster energy drink! The recovered footage is honestly pretty cool. Especially when you know what was going on.
I'm glad you found it! The blade chroma in my pic I lost to a fly away! Never found it
ouch... so sorry to hear that.
I cant imagine that pain
dont even want to....
Yeah it sucked big time! A lot of money done the drain.
Sport mode yet its still going backwards.. damn that must have been one hella wind, 30+ mph.
also if this happens again, fly streight up. usually when there is an abnormally strong wind it gets better at higher altitudes
Great story with happy ending. I'm glad you could find your "girl" again and first of all undamaged...
Oh, BTW, I really like your both channels and I love Ki&Ki's work...
Cheers and greets from France!
Man, the mysterious ending from the last video did end up paying off huh? Definitely must have been SUCH a feeling of relief when you found it
So many videos!!
Phew. Good luck there. Must be the KitKats.
That was good end ,like, and sub,Japanese wind is really strong, from English man in in Japan, maybe fly together?
Glad you found the drone! because the shots at 6:27 are amazing!
everything should have a locating feature! they are so easy to implement too!
So awesome you found your drone! You'd better get some insurance for it!
Wish I had you luck. I have the last GPS location but cant find it still about 2 hours of searching so far.
Did you end up finding it?
@@TokyoLens no, i looked all over.. its just off the road and was returning home.. but its thick woods and about 300 yards of forest in between. you would think that if it was in the air.. 350 feet going 20 mph it would stop and just slowly land in or near the GPS location.. The situation was it lost signal, then on its return home died.. the last gps was right in a open clearing but I searched all over for it and even went down the path to home in the woods :
Next time, use the mavic air ;) It has some serious skills in the wind. I prefer that 100 times over my mavic pro. Last time I flew it was gusts up to 15-18 m/s !! And no problemo
Oh my God what a Christmas present I am so happy for you that you found your drone! 🎁😁🎁 could you please explain to me exactly what you did with your phone in order to locate your drone with the GPS fix? Cordinates? So God forbid I should lose mine or someone else perhaps we could find ours as well. Thank you so much God bless and Merry Christmas
Thank you!
I looked at the last known GPS co-ordinatees
then did a bit of a calculation from there based on the height, airspeed, etc...
Tokyo Lens I have been reading a lot about KP index, basically, it's Solar flare that cause the GPS to get screwed up... I use an app called UAV FORECAST. It works well... Merry Christmas Sir. 🎅
oh, so that's why the previous video was ominous.
But I'm glad you found it!!!
the math class in school paid off i would say :D good job
I think this video is more epic than the footage of the Mavic would have made anyway lol
One day, like 3 years ago, when I was on a walk with my dog, I've noticed something weird lying under a tree. It was a drone, its battery was like 1 metre away from him. I always wanted to have a drone... but I'm also a kind person. So I put the battery back, turned it on and left it on the wall, hoping that the owner is still somewhere in range. When I was going back 10 minutes later, it was still there, so I took it home. I've looked on the internet how expensive it was... about 400 dollars ;-; (1700 polish złoty)... I had no idea how to find the owner and I was thinking about actually keeping it... then I've noticed a memory card slot. Fortunatelly for the owner, he left like 6-7 photos on the card, where only one of them was a picture of him and his family. Then, I've got an idea to post this picture on the facebook city group, maybe there is someone there, who know this person. I've got the response in like 30 minutes xD brother of the owner reached me, told me that he would take it a day after and asked what do I want for returning it. It was really weird for me to ask for money but I was in awful financial situation with my ex, so I asked him for a "food pack". Well... he gave us almost a 100 dollars (300 polish złoty) 😱and interesting fact - it turned out, that the owner was a physiotherapist of polish national volleyball team 😯 but guess what I've told him, when I gave the drone back... I rebuked him for flying in that area, because it was the airplane flight zone so he literally could cause an air disaster 😰
I cried 😭
Dude I got happy like it was mine own when you found it.
Wow you are lucky.
Almost happened to me today but it slowly came back
