My Cheap Chevy Tahoe PPV BROKE AGAIN!

  • This is a continuation of the story of my Chevy Tahoe PPV auction buy. I spent a whole lot of time and money on repairing the engine, doing a Displacement on Demand delete, bigger cam and a bunch of new engine parts. But this time the Tahoe had a catastrophic failure that sent it back to the shop for more repairs. Following along for the next chapter in the story on this truck and why buying a vehicle at an auction is fraught with risk.

    The people who are fussing at you are probably making payments on a $50,000 truck that will depreciate faster than they can pay it off. Who cares you’re upside down in it? You got a good truck way cheaper than at a new lot. I say keep driving it!

  • @fakebrake

    It's a 10,000 dollar truck with a new engine and rear end. You also did some custom work. Those 8000 dollar trucks dont offer that.

    After already having 9600 invested in a 4k car, not paying the extra 600 to have the seats seems poor logic.
    After all as u said you did compensate most of the loss selling the 4Runner...

    I've always thought about buying one of those police Chargers or Tahoe's. Never done it casue they scare me because ya they may only have 150K on the odometer but they have 3 million idle hours running the AC on all day!

      I owned two police Charger. I sold one, though. I put around 40k miles on the current one. No issues other than the regular maintenance. I am in market again to replace my Pacifica with a Tahoe. Here the key point is the maintenance. My Charger has almost 10k engine hours but all the maintenance was done by the dealership right on time. I got all the maintenance records from the PD and keep following the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule.

    Eh, you turned that Tahoe into a nice and reliable vehicle, you're never going to get your money back so, imo...I would keep it and use it for what ya bought it for, the family hauler with some exhaust rumble/soul. At this point I would spend the $600 or whatever it is to finish off the interior seating and use it. It's a nice ride, use and enjoy and it should last a long while. good luck

    Recently I bought a 99 Tahoe LS for $5200 CDN just over 200k I'm a big tall guy and I fit in it very good compared to the newer ones.I had a Pioneer stereo installed and put a cubby in where the old cd player was...very handy for cellphone ,pens note pad ect. Replaced most of the front end including new rad and serpentine. It runs well as I am the 3rd owner I found most of the scheduled maintenance was done. I am having the rear quarters replaced and any rust spots repaired and having the area below the style line painted with that truck bed liner. One thing before i bought it I asked for and received the VIN#and then had the vehicle Carfaxed which it cleared ok. I like you bought it to be a daily driver as I'm 70 and I like it and mainly I fit in it so good.One thin that I like about the older Tahoes is that all of the controls are simple to use like shifting into cruise without looking at the gauges. One of the best features that I like is the yellow tinted exterior mirrors so it cuts the glare from the guy behind you with those white lights. Wish it had a rear lift gate but the barn doors work well and the temp gauge and compass in the rear view mirror are awesome as well. I believe if I take care of my vehicle and drive defensively my vehicle will take care of me.

    @RJ-vb7gh Před 5 lety +1

    I bought my P71 for $500.00 with 95K on the clock at auction. I heard it run and drove it around the lot. Once I got it out on the highway, I found out it needed a rear wheel bearing and a new axle as well as new parking brake pads.. That cost me $650.00 to have done.... I spent about another couple of hundred dollars on some other stuff and it now has a small EVAP leak. Likely the car will come in a shade under $2000.00. Not great, but not awful. If the trans holds up and the motor stays strong, I think I did OK, not great. If the trans or motor craps out, at least I've had 6 months of fun with it.
    Auction cars are pig in a poke! Drive them at least 6 months before sinking money into upgrades. I see lots of used cop cars come and go in my town. Then I see them in the junkyards a few months later. People don't realize how many idling hours these things have on them. And mostly govt agencies don't ditch cars willy nilly. They know when the cars need major repairs and when they are used up. There's a whole pile of P71's on auction locally with around 250,000 miles on them right now... These things will liely need thousands of dollars to restore... They will likely go for scrap, or to some unsuspecting person who thinks they are buying a cheap $500.00 car.... which they most definately aren't.
    Auction cars will almost always have unexpected defects, that's why you buy them cheap... and they will always have lower resale, because being cheap is their greatest virtue. Normally you don't make money on cheap used cars. We bought a 5Th Ave for $135.00, drove it 10 years and a round 120,000 miles and likely sunk in around $3000.00 over the years. When the motor started stalling and the oil got sludgy at around 225.000 miles we sold it off for $550.00. I even told the guy who bought it he most likely should replace the engine... Still he was happy and towed it away.... I think we did pretty well in driving it for 10 years, I doubt I could have ever gotten the $3000.00 we sank into it back or made a cash profit. Finish out the truck and drive it for another 10 years... If nothing else goes wrong... you will have done reasonably OK with it. $1000.00 per year isn't bad for a fancy truck.

    No surprise the rear went out. The GM 10-bolt rear is trash. I had a 95 Firebird and it was known at the time that if you took a stock 4th Gen F-Body to the track, there was a good chance the rear would blow when you hit the throttle. Even more so with a truck. When looking to buy a used GM vehicle with one, just assume that the rear needs to be rebuilt, and with a better dif than stock.

    Beating on something that hard that has probably never been beat on before, that's what happens. I own an '07 Tahoe LT I bought with 69K miles...changed that rear diff fluid ASAP. Burnouts? Absolutely not!! Those rear differential is a critical point on these beasts and need to be maintained and used well. I also own a 1999 Camaro an LS1 V8(my fun car, 75 K miles). Burnouts? Yes, on very rare occasion when my really devilish horns come out. Otherwise, I do drive it rather briskly and sometimes very hard, but it was made more for performing than an SUV. Never had any major problems with regular maintenance--no breakdowns. It's been very dependable.
    Mercedes-Benzes are well known for being money pits and require more attention than a year-old toddler in a busy kitchen... especially any of their SUVs. Too much money is involved keeping those regularly serviced and operating correctly, and if something major breaks, that's when owners really sing the blues. You are really asking for it buying one of those things. Stick with the Tahoe and keep it up...do burnouts with something besides the family hauler. Hell, get rid of that weird limo and get a Corvette.

    Keep your Tahoe fix it up the way YOU need it to be. In the REAL world you're not upside down (remember you've out grown the Toyota) at all, with new Tahoes going for $70k+, yours is paid for with a performance build engine, built diff, now go ahead and get the trans freshened up +$2k and even get your seats +$2k. Even at a total of $15k you're still WAAAAY under the cost of a new or even used civilian Tahoe. And yes I practice what I preach as I'm currently doing an LS swap in my 1997 333kmi Silverado, diff and transmission already done, built LM7 is from a 2004 Tahoe...lol

    Either stick with the Tahoe, or get a Toyota Sequoia. Buying a Mercedes will break the bank, and ensure lots of entertaining reliability problems going forward. I think it's best that you get the seats for the Tahoe, and proceed to drive it into the ground as a family car. That would seem to be the financially prudent move given the situation as a whole.

      Maintenance by the book and sensible driving has resulted in excellent reliability.
      I have only had one no start ( faulty replacement battery) and one breakdown ( fuel pump relay) in 20 years.

    In case you don't know there is a Facebook group of collectors of former cop cars that buys sells and trades parts amongst the group they also share technical knowledge and such about common issues with different models ,when tahoe are upfitted those "extra seats" are sometimes sold by dealers ,but in many cases like Fire command or battalion chief vehicles they are given back to the agency ,so if you know a department that has or had a tahoe ,they sometimes forget those seats in a back room when they de comission it,guys have been known to score seats for a $50 donation,your taking there useless junk and thats an extra $50 in operating or training expenses fund,its win win .

    Eh, it’s all relative. I bought my PPV for 3K, did pretty much the same as you as far as upgrades, does over 400 horses, 425 torque, with engine and truck, I had 6k in it. I got front leather seats in excellent condition for $500, rear captain chair in great condition for $250 (local salvage yard ordered them for another yard), Denali 22” wheels and tires from same yard for $600. It’s all in how you buy your parts. I get stares and complements because of the cam rumble, and have no thoughts of selling because people low ball.. it’s paid for, and cheap to fix. Most importantly, it’s paid for and that’s how I look at it.

    Hi Im new here but also a Chevy Tahoe chic. Local car dealerships purchase at DEALERS auction which is better than the police auction. Police auction is usually their vehicles & unclaimed vehicles from tow. DEALERS purchase -then mark up price once it hits their lot but you can pay them (usually around $500) & u enter auction as escort. Every car A-Z, plus those sold "as is" is listed in a manual given u at entrance. Every vehicle is marked with lane # then approach # and u can "meet" vehicle you're interested in in the lane & watch it approach. You CANT drive any before purchase but minor inspections like leakage, tires, engine noise & such is allowed. Standard traffic light system is used GREEN means everything is good, title is available & its a good vehicle=these are costly depending on make model of course YELLOW means something is wrong usually a missing title RED means AS IS (LOL) speaks for itself. Auctions are fun, lots of walking, food court, ATMs. Its sorta like a 15 lane gas station so you gotta keep the book & keep 👀 👀 eyes on the vehicle u wanna bid on. Lots of people. Lots of bidders but u can sorta shut bids down, just let those around know your intentions. Whew thats a lot but basically thats what car auctions are. Oh yeah most vehicles arrive back to dealers lot so u pay transport fee ($75 most places)Good luck all.

    The R63 you talked about is a very rare car with approx. 200 units for the U.S I have a 2008 R320 CDI that I love it is a good choice. The gas millage in the R63 is bad plus you need to make sure the head bolts have been replaced.

    • @hullinger
      @hullinger  Před 5 lety

      Thanks for the tip on the Mercedes R63 headbolt issue. Seems there's always something to be concerned about with any car, huh! I like the R series because of the three rows of seats, especially since some have a center console in the second row that comes out for a pass-way to the third row. Plus, all of that luscious horsepower!

  • @daleswanson1784
    @daleswanson1784 Před 5 lety

    Take the third row seat out of a Suburban or Yukon XL and new car dealers will take $1,500 off right away. They really don't want to trade for it because it's hard to sell w/o the third seat. And, as you found out, finding the second and third row seats is hard and expensive if you can. The good thing you can't deny about this SUV is that it has a rebuilt engine and rear end that you would never get buying used. No, it won't add a lot to the $$$$ value, but it sure adds to your piece of mind knowing they're not something you have to face going forward.

    Get those seats. Finish what you started and quit doubting yourself. You know what you got. You got a great ride and you stopped at the last piece. That $600 dollars is cheap compared to what you've done already. It's a great vehicle now. Sure it's not cheap. But it's a Great ride now. $600 and done is a hell of a lot cheaper than a trade in. Yeah, trade ins are a vicious cycle that the buyer always losses on. Good luck. Just my 2 cents. Went down the same road with my 2013 Silverado LT. Lots of repairs. But you know what? Good as any new one out there. Also disabled that horrible AFM. Good luck!

    These Chevrolet vehicles have to have a computer programmer or what they call a Tuner ! Buy a good one like I did that tells your every fucking thing that's going on with it .becuase there going be all sorts of codes. Oxygen sensors , wheel sensors , throttle body , brakes , trains mission so forth and so on . I have fixed it all ! If I buy gasoline that is low grade it throws a code . You clear them !
