Hey Trek Planner, I was the one that sent you the coordinates, I was excited to see that you were able to get to covering it. Hopefully you'll be able to check out some of the other locations that I sent you as well. I would like to point out that I did notify the FAA and the Airport letting them know about this when I discovered it. Anyway glad to see you're continuing to make videos.

I think we are genetically predisposed to admire faceted stonework. Our culture's valuation of gemstones is an an example. In the old days, finding a nice projectile point would have been the equivalent of finding $100 laying on the ground.

    • @shawncounts785
      @shawncounts785 Před 6 měsíci +18

If this projectile point isn't in a state park or national park, there is nothing wrong with keeping this artifact, the chance of someone else coming across that artifact is slim to none. People like myself that hunt fields and creeks for these artifacts log where they find them, study them and cherish them! But on the other hand if that's what you choose to do I obviously respect that, awesome find!

Don't give up. They are out there. Look on plateaus and under sage brush bushes. Dry creek beds, on the curves, especially after a good rain. Study the area and find out where the old waterways flowed. They used arrowheads for thousands of years, so they are in layers in the dirt. Overton and Mesquite Nevada is where I have found some, but my father has found many in Utah.

If you live by a river where Indians used to be, you could put a stick at the edge of a river when the water is low but make sure it's strong enough to not get swept away when the river rises. After the river goes back down there should be arrowheads and other items by the stick, I've seen a CZcamsr do this and he actually got some good arrowheads.

That "arrowhead" is an atlatl dart point. True arrowheads are typically much smaller. A corner notch point of that type lilely dates to the Middle Archaic period and is probably in the 5,000 to 7,000 years BP age range.
A further note on making stone points, most points aren't fluted. That is a feature of certain Paleo era points, most notably Clovis and later Folsom and Cumberland style points.
All the same, it was a fascinating find. Thanks for bringing us along on your adventure.

So others can see it? Cmon. Not everything is about us, live in the moment. This is all of our world. Find something, take it. Maybe you’ll take it somewhere else and leave it in a spot where people would never have gotten to see an arrowhead. Just live in the moment.

are unexpected, much like that corner-notch projectile point you found. It would be fun to actually have an interesting destination instead of long linear transects. I did find a hatch off of an F-101 one time. I contacted the nearest AF base. They told me with a little embarrassment that stuff does fall off jets from time to time. It was just a rectangle of aluminum, but it had service inspection tags that made identification easy.

I discovered by accident when I noticed there were black stones in the area, black from where they had been burned.. Very little digging uncovered hundreds of flawed examples. By flowed, the stone was being worked and too much of it was chipped away in the process. Like our host, I left everything as I found it.

For those of you who are wondering, that report is NTSB#SEA96LA154. I don't know why he's blurring it; those reports are public for a reason. That Colonial Skimmer (registration N248B) took off from Taylor, Arizona on 1996-JUL-12 for just some fun flying. The 42-year-old pilot landed at Gallup, New Mexico for fuel. Despite the fact that his fuel gauge was off, the pilot did not visually check his fuel levels prior to resuming flight. The engine quit due to low fuel at 1,000 feet above Utah and it crashed at a place called Halls Crossing (northeast of Lake Powell just over the border between Arizona and Utah).
The report blames the pilot for not checking the fuel using a dipstick, which is incredibly important to do if you think one of the gauges in your 30-year-old plane is malfunctioning. A skimmer is a type of amphibious plane. It is a terribly hideous aircraft. It looks like you asked a child to draw an airplane and they put the engine above the cockpit for no reason then ran out of space on the paper.
For those of you wondering why NTSB reports are so slow in coming, this was one of nine airplane crashes that happened on that one day and one of two that was investigated by the Seattle office. The "Hall" in "Halls Crossing" is a man named Charles Hall who established an auto ferry--the only one in Utah. That ferry is not operational at present due to extremely low water levels in Powell.

Where I live in rural Canada when planes crash in the wilderness, they often aren't found for years. The crash sites can be engulfed by the forest cover and not visible from the air.

I think k the cairn of rock with fallen down post looked like a 1800’s vintage government survey marker. Probably 1880-1900. As a surveyor I’ve seen a number of these old markers. The metal post was a section corner. Stamped information tells you where it was on a map. Keep up the good stuff. Scott Mac

I've known many people who died in small aircraft crashes. I myself was in a small airplane crash. No one lost their life, but two of us were pretty injured. I was 7 months pregnant. They saved my baby, who is about to turn 48! You said the pilot reported sudden loss of engine power and my immediate thought was, Yeah, that happens when you run out of fuel. I guess I'm jaded, but it happens more than you would think. So, the first couple minutes when you showed the destroyed aircraft, I was surprised at my strong emotional reaction. You are indeed a strong, concerned, conscientious guy. Much appreciation to you for the way you conduct yourself.

That was quite an unusual aircraft. (Colonial Aircraft Corp Model C-1 Skimmer). It is classified officially as a sea-plane for landing on water, although I get the sense it was more for lake and shallow waters. The engine and propeller were on a pillar above the centre of the aircraft. The propeller was a pusher, facing backwards. It was first built in the late 40s and the design evolved into the 'Lake Buccaneer' which I think is still made today.

@@TheTrekPlanner Yes, I believe that's true. They are still making derivations, including a six-seater version. I'm guessing they are popular in places where water landings are the best option. Florida and the Keys comes to mind. The Pacific North-West and Canada too I imagine.

I grew up on the North Oregon Coast. One Sunday morning, after a large storm when I was in the 4th grade, I got on my bicycle and road down to the beach. While cruising down the beach road, I caught something out of the corner of my eye. So I jumped off my bike, ditched it in the sand, and proceeded to investigate. As I crested this small dune (like Jeff), the mood changed immediately. It was literally instantaneous shell shock, and I froze in my tracks. Because right there a few feet in front me was a headless corpse. Shirtless, bloated, and its neck stretched out, it looked like a scene out of Jaws. The calm early morning water was lapping up on the beach, and the golden sun rays were breaking through the trees, lighting up the sand, and bang, you got this headless corps of all things laying there dead in the sand. This guy and his girlfriend jumped off a 300ft cliff into rocks and surf below. I have been in weekly therapy ever since. I'm 58 years old now. Lol, okay, I am kidding about the therapy part.

Cool find though on the plane and its history. I am so glad you put the arrowhead back. I used to be certified with the BLM to work on dig sites being done on BLM land for approved digs with various Universities. The reason people should look but replace back it was found (or "in situ", latin for leave it there as is) because that one little arrowhead can tell a lot of information. Like who. What. Where. And possibly why. 😃

Another great video. I’m glad that there wasn’t any bad news from the plane crash. I did know that there is a database of all plane crashes. Unfortunately I witnessed a small plane crash back in 1991 and helped to retrieve the two passengers on board. Both of them passed away and I knew at the time neither would make it. It has been over 30 years but I still think of it often. The cause of the crash was the same as the one you came upon…ran out of fuel. Anyways thanks for posting all of these.

If you look on the aft end of the fuselage on a wreck there should be a "data plate" on the aircraft. A key piece of information to track down the airframe and it's history.
