As a cancer survivor, with the malignancy in my (R)maxillary sinus, I underwent radiation therapy as well, consisting of twenty treatments, which was everyday, except weekends .
The mask was intimidating, but you HAVE TO GET INTO A DIFFERENT MINDSET! Get out of your fear mode by thinking of the end result of this modern miracle of medicine.
Look at childbirth. Yes, it hurts like a son of a bitch (went completely natural with 2 of my 5 children), but guess what? You do survive, and actually go on to file that pain in a filing cabinet in the back of your brain...then go thru it again!
The big question for you is what are your alternatives.

Methods I used to cope through the 35 sessions IMRT. I tried to slow my breathing. I did this counting 1 to 5 in my head while I slowly inhaled. Then counted from 5 back to 1 while I exhaled. I think this distracts you from panicking because you concentrate on the counting and breathing. I hope this method may help someone.

I just wanted to say thankyou for this. I'm just beginning my journey and had mask made yesterday and already feel completely traumatised. I am just panic stricken and struggling to move forward. This video at least gave me half an hour of not crying and hope that in the future things could be different. With love from the UK 🇬🇧.

I am about to start radiation next week and I'm terrified! My anxiety is at a level 10. So please tell me how did you do? Did you finish? And was the mask as awful as I anticipate?
