New Track Lighting, Guard Rail, and Catch Fence for Carrera Slot Car Track

Sorry for the long video (and for the assembly portion not entirely being in camera view)...but I finally got around to making a video of the guard rail, catch fence, and lighting solution I've been working on.
This has been a 'work in progress' for several weeks but I think it turned out well.

Here's how I did it:
1.) Design and 3D print parts
- Support Block (connects to the track, holds the 1/8" rod for guard rails and 1/4" aluminum tubing for light posts)
- Post Cap (used on the end of light posts that will not have an actual USB light - you don't need a light in every position. I space mine about every 3-5 support blocks)
- Post to USB Housing Adapter (connects the light post to the USB housing)
- USB Light Housing (this keeps the light on the track and not in your eyes and also just makes it look better)
- Mesh clamp inside and outside pieces (this snaps onto the light post and clamps the catch fence into place using M3 x 8 screws)
Software:
- AutoDesk "Fusion 360" - for 3D modeling/CAD
- Simplify 3D - for generating the 3D printing process and the 'gcode' used by the 3D printer.
2.) Materials:

First off, thank you very much for all the work you did to show us how you built your catch fence and guardrail system. You did an outstanding job of thinking outside the box. Some of these items are no longer available but I'm sure it should be easy to find them. Anyway, I am most interested in the pieces you can't buy in the store. I do not have a 3D printer and have no desire to own one lol. I am new to this sport and just finished my 4th track last night and I am having power to the car problems now. Again many thanks, I will be more than happen to donate to your program after I figure out how I can get my hands on the plastic pieces manufactured by your 3D machine. There are 3D printing services available for a reasonable price.
Best lighting and catch fence I have run into so far. I am looking for catch fencing for my high banked AFX track and getting ideas. This is way above what I was looking for but very impressed at the detail and quality.

There is nothing available (commercially) that actually works that's why I developed this system. Let me know how many you need (what size turn with number of track pieces) and if you only want the support blocks (for the guard rail), with the Mesh Clamps (for the catch fence), and/or the post to USB housing and light housing (for the lighting).
Here's my initial pricing (this is subject to change)
$3 For a single support block
$1 For (2) mesh clamps with a single post cap
$1 For a single post-to-USB Housing adapter with a single light housing
Remember that you don't need a light in every position but you do need a support block in every position.
The prices above are for the unpainted 3D printed parts only. Understand that although I test fit every piece it maybe necessary to slightly trim the part of the support block that snaps into the track due to Carrera's tolerance on the opening in each piece of track can/does vary slightly.
The aluminum tubing, KwikMesh, LED, USB Housing, M3x8 screws, and wiring can be purchased separately (see the links in the description of this video).
Depending on the number of people that are interested, I will make another detailed video with the pricing information and different options.

This is really cool. You can use some of the empty spots to put an LED to indicate track conditions like a marshal post waving a flag

Thanks for the comments. I am glad you are enjoying the content and even more glad that you are getting into 1/32 slot car racing. Slot Cars are such a great hobby.
My only recommendation is to go with Carrera track (unless you're building a wood routed layout) as it is the only 1/24th scale track (used for 1/32 and 1/24 cars) it provides the extra room for the cars to get a little sideways and still stay in the track. The Carrera track has been made for many years and maintains backwards compatibility aka: I can still use my 20+ year old track with the new stuff from Carrera.
Just remember to have fun, don't worry about being perfect, take your time, and enjoy.

My old track is long gone. Had no one to race with, so I sold or gave away everything, and left the hobby for a few years. Got back in about 4 years ago. Mostly solo now, but hope to get a few guests now and then.

Looking real good so far. Thanks for the in-depth info I've been waiting for. A bit of advice: don't let guests drive your modified cars unless you program them for a lower top speed, otherwise you'll be digging car parts out of your drywall. We always give guests our 'rentals' (old bashers like Nascar COTs and Ferrari 599s as there's nothing to break on them). Also, let me know if you decide to make those 3d print files available. Good stuff.
Great advice "Johnie". Being able to set a maximum top speed and many other options are some of the biggest advantages of the Carrera Digital system over analog. However, I'm still not a big fan of the digital controllers. I really miss using a good analog controller.
Eventually I'll open a huge can of worms when I cover differences between analog and digital systems including how to correctly wire the track to support switching between analog and digital. This is probably the single biggest feature that is lacking in the Carrera system.

Hello again "Johnnie", Re: the 3d print files (aka: the STL files). Sorry I missed this part in my previous reply.
I am happy to support the hobby and provide the STL files so people can print out their own parts. This will be free (if people like it and use it, I ask that they consider a small donation of $5) However, I have a lot of concerns as 3D printing is awesome but it has a steep learning curve (which you may have already experienced) and requires a lot of 'tweaking' to get things right. The differences between 3D printer manufacturers, filament choices, and the countless number of print settings can also be an issue.
I will post the files up on Thingiverse in the next few days and will be making another video to cover that and some purchasing options if anyone is interested in purchasing the 3D printed parts or complete kits (still working on pricing and different options that are fair...I am not trying to make a bazillion $$$ just a little beer money on the side :)

Great video and awesome looking track! I've been looking for a good fencing system/material. I like what you did with the quick mesh. My issue is, I want to add the fencing to an existing "wall" (primed wood trim) and/or around Carrera shoulders. Do you make anything or have a recommendation on best way to secure the mesh to the wall/shoulders?

Hi Jeff, I downloaded your files, made a nice donation, and I am using your ides with some changes. I'm using a longer head with 3 lamps of the programmable 3 color LED's to change colors. They will be connected to a Arduino. I'll send you pictures soon.

Here's my recommendation based on 30-40 years of slot car experience:
- Basic starter set:

- A basic starter set is a great place to start but it will get boring very fast so be sure to purchase some extra track. Carrera has some "Track Expansion Packs" that are the best value:

- Don't buy too much track yet.
- Once you are ready to expand further, invest some track planning software and create several layouts for the space you have and then pick one or two that you would like to actually build.

I completely agree about wondering why no one has tried to provide a guard rail/catch fence/lighting solution that works on banked and flat track (that also looks good). This is why I designed my solution.
Re: Marketing and Expanding
I am currently working with some injection molding companies to handle mass producing the parts. The initial investment is several thousands of dollars for the mold(s) but this is the best way to go for consistent product quality, high volume, quick turnaround, and my current pricing would not increase by more than a dollar or two.
I was entertaining the idea of having online 3D printing services i.e. ShapeWays but the cost per part was 500% higher than my current pricing. i.e. I charge $3/support block and online 3D printing services want $15/support block. It is very important to me that this solution is affordable to everyone.

My platform is the same size as yours. I was leaning more toward the landscaping and I've been non-stop printing 1/32 buildings for a couple of weks. I attempted to work with track planning software but found the learning steeper than I wnted to deal with at my age. I like your track layout. Any plans to post your track plan in detail with parts list ?
Currently I'm using Carrera's power supplies and since I run both 1/32 and 1/24 I've ben switching out power supplies. Any suggestion for a setup using one power supply with switchable voltage ?

Yes and Yes. This is something I wanted to with all of my track layout videos but it requires a bit of video editing which I've been trying to avoid due to the time it takes and it makes my hobby more like work which just isn't a lot of fun.
But...You are not the only one to ask this question and now I have a purpose for doing this and I like to help people :)

Note: Since you already have Carrera Digital power supplies, you can save a bunch of $$$ by cutting the end off that connects to the control unit, add a little wire, a fuse holder, and connect to the aftermarket power supply. Although Professor Motor is a great resource, paying $50 for that Carrera plug with some wire and a fuse holder is a little much.

I am currently looking at some online 3D printing services and injection molding options for production but these are very expensive.
I have completed a few orders myself.
I am happy to print some parts for you but understand that this takes time and I only have one printer. It takes me about 10 hours to print 10 sets (10 support blocks, 20 mesh clamps, 10 post-to-USB housings, and 10 light housings). Depending on how many you need will determine how long it will take me. My current turnaround time is 2-4 weeks depending on the size of the order.

Also have you thought about making the Carrera clips to hold the PVC barrier or inter-grading the green posts you made with the availability to hold the PVC barrier instead of the wire. 1.) Are the 3D printed parts I designed for sale?
They will be soon. I am just trying to figure out a fair price and different purchasing options i.e. 'paint them yourself', different colors, individual pieces or kits, with or without the LEDs, wire, USB housing, etc...
2.) Have I thought about making my support brackets work with the Carrera PVC barrier (I think you're talking about the red and white guard rail stuff from Carrera)?
This is a great idea and I did originally think about doing this. However, the Carrera PVC guard rail/barrier (and pretty much every other available option currently available) only works with flat pieces of track and does not work with banked turns. I wanted a single universal solution for any track piece flat or banked so I designed my own :)
It's funny how the only factory guard rail that worked with banked turns was the "Red Licorice" stuff from Carrera that you can't find anymore and the clips were easy to break and did not stay in place.

I believe you are referring to the track "shoulders" (with the red/white striping). These are from Carrera and are readily available from your local hobby shop like "LEB Hobbies":

You can make your own but for banked turns it is very tricky and the Carrera shoulders plug right in with no problem.

Thanks for the comment Randy. This was not my first track lighting attempt. I went through several iterations over the last 20+ years. It wasn't until LED lighting and 3D printing became readily available that I was able to do this. I spent most of 2018-2019 learning how to use 'Fusion 360'(CAD software) for designing parts, 'Simplify 3D' ("slicer" software) for converting that design into something that could be 3D printed (aka: "G-code"), and finally how to use the 3D printer itself. This was a steep learning curve initially but CZcams is a great resource for learning (see some of my 3D Printing video descriptions for details on the resources I use). Canada is a great place with great people...haven't been to Toronto yet. My shop is located in the state of Maryland, USA.

what 3 D printer should one be looking to purchase?

This could be a very long reply and at the end, all I can offer is my recommendation.
There are a lot of good printers out there and there is also a lot of junk.
Ask yourself: “What do I want a 3D printer for?”, “What do I want to make?”, “Am I willing to put in the time required to learn this technology?”
Short answer: Prusa MK3S (this is the printer I have used for over a thousand hours)

Note: There is a kit version ($749) that you build yourself and will give you a lot of knowledge about how the printer works and there is a pre-assembled version ($999).
Long answer:
I have an advantage of having a fairly extensive background in mechanical design, precision machining, electronics, and computer software but that is not necessary to be successful with 3D printing (although it is very helpful). Patience, practice, and persistence.
I spent months researching and learning about 3D printing before I received my first printer and many more months learning how to use Fusion 360 (CAD program), Simplify3D (slicing program), and how to use the printer itself.
