    Many Soviet tanks came out of the factory with a couple logs on them so they could be put under the tracks in boggy terrain. It was also thought they might activate the initial fuse on incoming rounds stopping them from penetrating and spalling properly.

    Fun fact: The wood was actually not intended as armor. It was intended to help unstuck the tank if it got stuck in terrain. They'd wedge the log beneath the track and help the tank remove itself. But of course, it was an extra layer of protection against shells.

    • @unfortunately_fortunate2000
      @unfortunately_fortunate2000 Před 2 lety +6

      I did know know that but I don't think wood has any protection value as armor, unless they can test to figure out what arrangement of logs will detonate a HEAT round, I would suspect even at the very best is could be used to reduce how effective a HEAT round is but with tandem charges kinda being the standard these days, that too would be of zero use.
      it was never intended as protection, hence why most russian ww2 tanks had the log on the back because there's no other use for it than getting some traction when you're stuck.

    A tree gets larger in diameter, the older it gets.
    The older the tree, the harder the wood.
    Therefore; two younger trees ("tandem wood") with 100mm armor value being comparable to a single older tree with 100mm, completely checks out.
    What _DOESN'T_ track, is the 100mm equivalent armor value lol Those look like pine or spruce, which are soft. Plus, wood isn't a nice strong crystallized structure like metal... it's a weak, flimsy fibrous structure, and potentially waterlogged if recently cut down... So it might gain a bit of stopping power, but since water doesn't like to compress, it'd give the log all the *more* reason to blow apart like that do.
    _(I know, he's only joking, and, it's only a game, but just contributing that for the sake of the conversation 😁)_

    the technique you talk about really only applies to the first is-2, with low armour at the front, you reverse into battle so you have a much lower chance of getting killed, since the engine absorbs the damage. If you were to go facing forwards, any shot to your front would easily kill you. On the other IS-2s you got way more armour on the front so you don't really need to do that.

    I can't see enemies easily from third person view. Usually I use binoculars but I think I'm using it way too much
    İs something wrong with me or it's really hard to see the enemy
    Also does graphics affect spotting enemy

    First time I played the IS 2 I hated it. But I do like to spade all my vehicles so I kept playing them. Had some good matches with them and finally got a 14 kill match in the IS2 1944. Was one of the best days I had in WT. The event IS2 is pretty fun as well.

    I think the IS-2's reload rate forces YOU, Phly, to play at a slower, more measured pace, rather than running around "with your head cut off." Not all of us do the latter even if a vehicle allows it. ;) Maybe try it sometime, particularly in a TD or SPG? ;)

    Just a little nerd comment: the WW2 Russian tanks has grat mobility because of their diesel engines. They produced 2200 Nm of torque at 1200 rpm, and depending on the variant they can put out 450-700 HP with a speed of 1800-2000 rpm. For comparison, the gasoline Maybach HL230 had a maximum power of 700HP at 3000 rpm, but the peak torque was at very high rpm: 1800Nm@2100rpm. The Ford GAA (M26, later Shermans, etc) has 1400Nm@2200 rpm and 500HP@2600rpm. The diesel engines have much more flatter torque curves than gasoline engines, so they can put out more power through the full rpm range.

    Horsepower is king, transmission gears are the queen and rear end is the kid. Please remember it takes a family to make it work and change how tons are able to move quicker. Now add cousins gas and diesel to the equation. It’s called racing people. 😀
