Viyau, in regards to American Samoa it seems the island should never have named that, as the name is kind of misleading. The islands are an un-incorporated territory of the US and hence the people there are what is called nationals of the US (not citizens of the US). My understanding is that they do have some rights as Americans but very few and are facilitated American citizenship in the US only after they can proof proficiency in English and pass some tests. I haven't heard anything about UN involvement on the islands except to say that the islands are on the UN registry of colonies still to achieve sovereignty.

Viyau, Rosello already has the resident commissioner selected when he wins the election and it has been said that the first thing on their agenda will be to impose the Tennessee plan and do you know what that is? They will select 5 congressmen and 2 senators and ask congress to sit them. Historically Tennessee did it when congress refused to admit them as a state and the state decided to force the issue by doing what I've just explained.

In 2012 finally the plebiscite most recently held was a two part question, the first one was do you favor continuing the territorial (colonial) status of the island and the majority answered no by 54%, on the second question over 61% chose statehood. There were close to 1/2 a million people who decided not to chose any of the alternatives so should that count for anything? In a democracy you are given a chance to vote and you either do or you don't and if you don't then you can't complain about the results. That is why the Tennessee plan is being considered to resolve the matter once and for all. By the way are you Hawaiian as I can see you have the flag of Hawaii on your logo?
Benjamin, there is no way that the US will fall to this trick. Its not respectful to the US and they are not going to fall for that. At this time of turmoil why would they allow a debt and crime ridden though beautiful island into its union? They already own it! As far as being in a democracy, Puerto Rico belongs to a supposed democratic republic, but in fact it is an empire. It does not give democracy to Puerto Rico when it demands it of others. It even preaches about it. Puerto Rico is not a democracy, it is a colony, just like they were when England was the owner of the 13 colonies. Now they are talking about a Federal review board to manage Puerto Rico which in reality makes it a dictatorship. I fail to understand how a Tennessee Plan would not be laughed at.

When the islanders come into the mainland their citizenship is truly equal and complete but, while residing on the island they are treated as second class citizens and that is the part that makes no sense at all. Take veterans for example, when war is declared Puerto Rican men have traditionally been at the forefront in serving their country (U.S.) and most of the taxes required by the Feds are being paid anyway. As far as "they own the island anyway" as you say this is the 21st century and that becomes the thinking of old empires. Colonies have no reason to exist anymore. The U.S. Either brings Puerto Rico into its fold or set it free, that way we would join the club of independent states which I like too. Puerto Rico has the infrastructure and intelligent citizentry to survive in its own.
