  • In this shot from the hip video I try to cover all the bases on vehicle carry considerations. We are all different and we all have different priorities, as well as access to different capabilities and weapons. So, I display what I could possibly do with what I have and give some general guidelines to go by.

I think another good point to mention is your vehicle isn't covered in stickers and exterior accessories that could cause attention, or worse, interest. I think that's a pretty important urban greyman thing to consider. Don't stand out, and just blend in. A lot of gun guys make themselves a target with this.

One technique to consider is using one of the dog hammocks in the backseat of your vehicle. It completely covers view of your floor boards, however when you open the back door you still have access under the hammock. I ride with my pup a lot and I keep the hammock installed as a method of concealment. Getting one that matches the color of your interior is even better (such as black for myself) Also, tint your windows with the darkest tint you can legally have. (or illegally if you like to live on the wild side, just be ready to pay a ticket) I work with the homeless daily and every day I encounter some other wild ass situation, So I think about this a lot.

One of the biggest reasons I watch you is because you always give all these safety considerations and thoughts on responsible ownership. You don’t see too many people talk about those things and whenever you bring it up you have some fudds shutting people down. One of the bags I have is a bag I brought from REI, it’s a sling bag branded KAVU and I had someone stitch some straps in like the ones inside eberlestock bags and I just mount a holster on it for my 365 or my G19.

For about the last year since covid has hit I have been carrying around my truck gun. 10.5 AR pistol and I am keeping it in a old dewalt sawzall case. I work construction and had a sawzall crap out on me and figured I would repurpose the case so I cut out all the interior walls and sprayed some adhesive and put some foam padding in there. I also have two 40 round mags 3 30 round mags and two 20 round mags along with a 10 rounder in it. I have to have the law tactical folder on it to get it to fit but it does. It slides up under the back seat in my truck and I keep a tool bag in front of it so when I open the back door I can just slide it right out the side.

  • @NotHunterCooper
    @NotHunterCooper Před 3 lety +7

Fun video! I definitely have a couple of thoughts.
#1. Based on my training and experience, I cannot strongly discourage enough having a firearm in a vehicle that isn't holstered on your person or locked in a container for a number of reasons. First, exactly like you stated, a weapon in your car does you no good when you are outside of it. Second, windows in a car mean nothing to a thief, and can be broken and climbed through in seconds, not minutes. Third, and often overlooked, in the event of a crash anything unsecured in the vehicle becomes a projectile especially in a rollover situation. Your fancy rifle can easily harm you while being flung around in the cabin.
#2 While not the most tactically popular, sedans offer a trunk that is often very secure without a large amount of effort. They are infinitely better to keep things you don't want stolen in.
#3 While weapons are sexy to talk about, much more important in your car are medical supplies, flares, water and food, and warm clothing/gear if you are in a cold climate.

People would steal anything that may look of value, school related materials, music stuff, sports stuff, stupid stuff. People will steal anything they think will have some sort of value. The point is, is to have a bag that people won't question if there is a firearm in it, typically a bag that's on you somewhere out in the public eye. You're not gonna hide anything within a bag inside a vehicle and someone not wanting to know what's inside if they have the opportunity to get inside. You're better off not having that "pack/case" in your vehicle and have the firearm secured somewhere that's hidden or not easily found.

I have 2 the Colt 901 older but still effective & a fairly new Sig Virtus this way you have the best of both weapon systems. In my truck have a go bag with additional gear but normally I just carry a primary & backup all the time, unless I'm going somewhere. I can always put my Sig Rattler or a PCC in a bag & throw with the rest of the gear. Really the choices are endless it's like you said whatever fits the user & environment.

Im a big advocate for discreet carry bags over tactical cases and gun cases for transporting firearms in a vehicle. Another recommendation is also always carrying a loaded open carry or ccw (state laws differ) while transporting firearms. Its a good precautionary exercise because I found that depending on the enviroment you live in, some people will immediately pay attention to what you bring in and out of your home with the intention of victimizing you. In my case I was living in a stacks style apartment next to section 8 housing.

    Good considerations.
One thing for sure, adjust your driver's side seat while in full kit minus a backpack and have your pack stashed right on the center console so you can just grab it and go. Have the straps facing to the left where you'll be sitting so you can easily slide your right arm into the forward facing strap. Find some way to secure the pack too so it won't fly around in a crash and be hard to get to or cause more damage but make sure you can grab it easily too without any extra movement. Just wedge it between the seats if that works. Practice driving and bailing in full kit with your rifle and you'll figure out on your own what you need to adjust. Make sure you're really comfortable too. If you feel like you need to take your kit off after an hour of driving you're not set up right. Wearing a chest rig is always gonna suck when driving for a long time and if it's got all kinds of unsecured crap on it something will inevitably get caught on something when bailing out. For that reason soft rifle rated armor is great if you can afford it then just store your mags in a drop leg pouch or something. Also magazines on your chest especially if you're carrying 2 per pouch (mostly unnecessary) can add way too much space up front especially if you also have your rifle between you and the steering wheel at any point.
Seatbelts, which are always a good idea and shouldn't be neglected, also will get caught on a rifle or chest rig. Always have a seatbelt cutter and glass breaker secured to your steering column. A fire extinguisher within hands reach secured by magnets or breakaway straps too.
Obviously don't drive with your rifle sling on that's a recipe for disaster, what you want is to be able to stick it to your right or left on the door with a magnet. Cinch the sling down and secure it with cheap rubber bands so it won't catch on anything. I say cheap rubber so you can just rip the sling open and shoulder it and snap the bands easy, don't use ranger bands.
Also really best to rely on a handgun for driving (or a CZ Scorpion 🦂 if you're cool 😎)

The ar-15 is a versatile platform. You throw a drum magazine and a full auto thingy and it becomes a machine gun. You throw on a scope and normal mag on it and it becomes a sniper rifle. Remove the upgrades, shorten the barrel, put a collapsible stock, a grenade launcher and a normal optic and it becomes a main battle rifle. Shiii that's pretty cool

Rocking just a bike, I don't carry a rifle/long gun all that often unless I'm going to work. In which case I usually just sling it up or break it down and put it in my 5.11 RUSH12 bag. But I'll be messing more with bags and options when I get an actual vehicle here shortly. Great video, got my sub and looking forward to checking out your other content.

Larue Tactical Convert MK II Bags is what I love the most .
I have 2 go too rigs . Technically only have 1 but the second will be done as soon as it gets back from ADCO. My Primary is 12.5" 556n Mini Recce Pistol With SBA3 , TR24R , SF Lighf and YHM Turbo K Can . I use Black Hills 69g Match King Hollow Point . PMAGS and Surefeed are my go too mags ..
Second Rig which will be complete next range visit will be 13.9" 6mm ARC with PLX 1-8× GRIFFIN MIL ACSS , Modlite OKW , and 30SDK with Pinned QD Brake. Barrel should be back by the end of the week . Then I can take it out to the range to confirm all my DOPE . It was originally 16". Super excited to have AR15 capable of extended Ranges . Realistically it's primary use will be 600 yards and in .

I like you added the section on choosing a caliber other than 5.56. For example, 7.62x39 doesn't lose as much velocity on shorter barrels(i.e. 10") and the AK is piston driven so a folding stock is easier and cheaper to add to the weapon system.

I picked up a couple Kelty Redwing 44 Hiking packs for use as “vehicle get home bags”, and I agree they’re a great value. $62 on sale at Dick’s.
The 44L is a great size for my wife and I, 5’8”-5’9”, carrying 20 and 25 lbs respectively. 15% of our body weight equals max load of 20-25lbs.
It wouldn’t make for a good EDC bag but I can’t speak on their tactical line.

A lot of great considerations there. I tested a number of bags and firearms in my vehicle before choosing a dedicated setup. It still changes on occasion since I live in a city but have a rural property as well. If I know I’m gonna be rural occasionally I’ll have something bigger along as well but I always have my 11.5” Mk.18 esque clone with a Law Tactical folder. It runs well suppressed and unsuppressed. One thing I’m sure you’ll get a lot of hate on is “not having your guns properly secured in your car” this is the dumbest argument ever for a lot of people. Of course everything is always situation dependent but I’ve had a lot of really nice cars over the years and I’ve been carrying firearms on and off body in my vehicles daily for the past 15 years and never once has my vehicle been broken into and the same can be said for a LOT of people I know. I’m not in a high crime area most of the time so that helps but what helps even more is concealment as you said. Not having gun slogans and stickers pasted all over your vehicle and not having them laying out in the open or in an obvious gun case is another plus. I have mine in an inconspicuous bag that I can rapidly access from the front or back seat and when I leave the vehicle I usually lay a sweatshirt over it. If I have any other gear along I usually have enough low value clutter to cover it up with. If I have a lot of stuff, like when me and my buddies are on trips with many thousands of dollars of gear with. I have a tarp and some random low value tool belts and stuff that are usually in my vehicle anyways and we cover everything up with that. Keep up the great work, I’m loving your content.

Running a 10.5 with a 1-6, visible green laser and a stream light. Generally only take it out when I’m traveling across or out of state, never leaves my side when I do. Pair that with my EDC kinda bugout bag with a plate and some gear. The struggle is having to break it down and then reassemble as said in the video. I guess the benefit is that I carry concealed as well so if there is a threat I can shoot moving to cover, pull it out then switch to the AR

I think the important thing when storing a weapon in your vehicle is just be smart. Your car is not a holster or a safe. Don't leave anything in plain sight, make sure that if someone was gonna smash your window in, they can't just grab your gun and run. Like he said in the video, some days, depending on where you're going and what you're doing, it might just be better to leave it at home if you know you will have to leave your car unattended for a period of time. Plan ahead, use your brain, don't arm criminals by being stupid or lazy.

Decreased velocity obviously also decreases the effects of terminal ballistics as well as the increase bullet drop. A bdc reticle compensates for the bullet drop but not terminal ballistics. Anything beyond 300 meters won’t take full advantage of the 223/556, but anything beyond 300 meters in a life or liberty situation you should just break contact.

But of course my setup is ever evolving and I am still doing setups in that rig as I just bought it a couple months ago, I might make a mount for the pistol to sit flush against the rear seat in the foot well and mount prolly a atv scabbard in the cargo area when I get molle hard panels like that grayman tactical panel in the vid. Drew up one to replace a cubby cover and then panels to mount over the rear quarter windows to hold things like a first aid kit, recovery equipment, and other odds n ends. So this will be evolving over time
