- Caleb Williams is reportedly getting first team reps for Oklahoma this week at practice after he replaced an ineffective Spencer Rattler during the Sooners' big comeback win against the Texas Longhorns last Saturday. To Skip's credit, this really is an "in all my years" moment. Rattler went from the consensus #1 overall pick to losing his job in less than 2 months...historically crazy.

When you’re driving the field and scoring rather than turning it over or quick 3 and outs it gives the defense rest and momentum

The OL was playing poorly aswell, but they have picked it up and are good again. This is all on Spencer he’s too cocky, slow, and terrible decisions. He’s turnover king.

If you're struggling to look good in Lincoln Reily's system..... then idk what to say. If Rattler stays and loses the starting job and enters the draft, he's going in the sixth round. lol
It’s hard to be bad in LR system. Spencer is out of shape, slow, and way too cocky for his skill set.
Yeah I think even if he transfers next year and does good, He’s still a second rounder at best.
I think you should just go to the draft because he's going to have to earn his way even if he plays well somewhere else considering he's not six-foot-four 230lbs. He also is not mobile like Lamar or anything. In other words, he is a shorter quarterback who does throw the ball well but who runs relatively average and just lost his job. Still getting drafted and a shot is probably as good as it's going to get for this kid anyway. I'd go if I were him.
Yeah… but going in the 6th drafted to an NFL team is better than being broke working an everyday job.
LR's system is built for duel threat QBs. Spencer is a pocket passer; not a duel threat QB. He would thrive more in a Pac12 type of offense.
I saw him on QB1 when he was in HS. Wasn’t that impressed with the guy on and off the field. Seemed very full of himself kinda like Tate Martell was on that show

The only reason he was a "first round talent" was because of the OU on the side of the helmet and being a 5 star. Yeah he's got a strong arm and can throw from any platform, he's got physical tools he just doesn't have it between the ears he gets rattled (pun intended). Not to mention Lincoln Rileys system is about QB friendly as you can get except for Josh Huepel or Lane Kiffin. If he can't succeed there then there's an issue with the player somewhere.

Also a born and bred lifelong OU fan here. Even when Rattler went on his "run" last season, I had no confidence in him. Can't put my finger on it, but I keep thinking "Jeff George." Another gunslinger with amazing arm talent that had some quirk of personality that made him not very likeable to his teammates. That's what Rattler seems to be. Loads of talent, smart and marketable, but not a QB in the sense that his teammates do not like him at the level that successful teams have towards their QB/leader. I'm rooting for the kid to turn it around, but I'm not very hopeful. Caleb Williams has that cocky attitude too, btw, but for whatever reason it's expressed in his play and body language, whereas Rattler's swagger is "I'm better than everyone. I'm the reason." Williams thinks he's better too, but not more valuable, and I think that's the difference.

The issue is that OU has been successful in the last few years with QBs that are true dual-threats (run, pass). Spencer is not a runner and not much of a scrambler so now teams know not to expect him to run and force him to pass, which makes the OU offense one-dimensional. With Williams, it now appears you have a guy that reminds me of a combination of Jalen Hurts and Kyler Murray and teams will be forced to respect his legs, which they didn't do with Rattler.

Lincoln Riley might actually be a genius. This style is basically him saying to Caleb, you're already going to be great, you don't need the limelight yet. Basically telling him to stay humble and good things will come, showing he's got confidence in him but not straight giving up on Rattler. That's some high IQ coaching there.

Real simple, if Spencer is benched, why stay? It makes no sense to stay at Oklahoma when he can start with a number of other FBS schools? If he is benched, he needs to enter the Transfer Portal before the December early signing period so other schools can make a decision about their recruiting class. It is not selfish, it is smart.

There is one defense I will give Spencer & nobody wants to point it out. Lincoln was calling a terrible first half by continuously forcing the pass & not running more. 2nd half with Caleb OU ran the football. OU’s oline isn’t great at the pass blocking. I think Caleb is overall better but that is due to him being able to use his legs better than Spencer.
Im kinda disappointed that they didnt touch on Spencer's character and lack of leadership with a very big ego. The kid is a big "I" guy

The issue is rattler isn’t a dual threat. He is a pocket Passer. OU lost 2 OL to the NFL and immediately you could tell a difference the OL now is not good for OU. Meaning OU can’t establish the run early in games so that causes teams to rush 3/4 DL and sit in a 7/8 man cover 2 zone coverage eliminating the deep shot for rattler. Because teams are in a zone coverage 70% of the time it causes rattler to have to throw tight window passes or just check it down because the deep shot will never be open. With Williams he can run so teams have to stack the box against him which open up the passing game, and opens up the deep shots.
