    Combat Mission Cold War is set in the tipping-point years of a conflict that gripped the world for 45 years. Between 1979-1982, both the NATO and Soviet Warsaw Pact militaries began the shift away from industrialized warfare of the early 20th century and towards the modern digital battlefield of today. Combat Mission Cold War simulates several “what if” conflict scenarios between US and Soviet forces centered on the strategic Fulda Gap and environs in West Germany.
    Combat Mission is a game developed by Battlefront.com. One of the most realistic tactical simulations ever made, Combat Mission covers a wide variety of military settings, from World War 2 (Normandy, Market Garden, Sicily, Italy and the Eastern Front) to fictional modern conflicts in Syria (Shock Force) and Ukraine (Black Sea).You can find out more about Combat Mission by visiting www.battlefront.com and especially the forums.

    One of the first scenarios I played in Cold War. By the end the starship became one of my favourite units in all of Combat mission, between its interesting concept, that it is actually an effective vehicle in the game and how cool I think it looks.

    Excellent video. I really liked seeing the scenario from both perspectives. One thing you might want to consider in future is doing a video or set of videos where you play the same scenario from both perspectives and discuss the differences. You do a particularly good job of explaining *why* you do what you do, so it could be really interesting to see this for both sides in a good scenario.

    I liked the way you made your own terrain with smoke and the artillery barrage, the ground terrain is quite limited. I like to think of "Soviet mass" as a function of being the attacker (which drives doctrine) and need a superiority of weapons (gun/ATGM tubes say in a tank or gun line) vs defender, and I'd expect Amies to use "mass" if they were attacking too, as well as being enabled by technology driven accuracy and lethality. Thumbs Up!

    For fun take this scenario, rename it, then swap out different forces for the same assault. M60A1 RISE+ versus T64B for example. Also replace normal artillery with cluster artillery, make it a night battle or in fog, in August when trees offer max concealment. I even tried one version using the giant Tyulpan 240mm mortar. o-:

  • @liliatalley2140
    @liliatalley2140 Před 2 lety +3

    I won the Fahrbahn scenario as the US vs the AI fairly easily though with noticeable casualties. My thoughts afterwards was same as yours to try it as the Soviets. I haven't done it yet but I did do it with Brauersdorf. As the US vs the AI, I won Brauersdorf with a total victory in around 20 minutes . Then arranged a PBEM with myself as the Soviets. I barely managed a tactical victory and it was tough. That scenario is not ideal at all for the classic USSR tactics. Although others are probably better than I in using USSR tactics. I have gradually concluded over several games that M901s are much more effective vs the AI than against a human player. Same with Soviet vehicle ATGMs. Hard to use any vehicle mounted ATGM effectively vs a human player.

    Huh, the Shillelagh missiles seem too accurate in comparison to reality. Also, as a question/video suggestion, how do you deal with impatience and with the feeling of having to fit into a schedule in game? I thinks it's a big issue for many new players like me, where even though a mission gives me 2 hours to complete it, I feel like if I'm being too slow but end up finishing with still too much time to spare, and with probably having commited some mistakes that might have been prevented by just wating.

    • @jonpick5045
      @jonpick5045 Před 2 lety +6

      That's a really good question. Fights are often really tough early on but there's usually a tipping point if you keep the pressure on and you've got the tactics right. Then things happen really quickly. Also, keep your eyes on the main prize. Often a secondary objective can be ignored.

    • @hermannabt8361
      @hermannabt8361 Před 2 lety +4

      I'm confused by the ineffectiveness of soviet ATGMs. A soviet ATGM operator had to achieve 998 simulated hits out of 1000 shots on the simulator before being allowed to fire two live missiles of which both had to hit. Only then were they certified as an ATGM operator. In the end operators could guide one missiles through several paper targets on the range. In the game the hit statistics look like they're from a 3rd world country, where the operators received barely any training.

    • @usuallyhapless9481
      @usuallyhapless9481  Před 2 lety +11

      @@hermannabt8361 Not only is accuracy on the range always considerably better than in combat, but in game troop quality is controlled by their experience rating rather than a flat "ATGM operators got X level of training". Naturally there will be troops at different stages in their training cycles, recalled conscripts who have forgotten everything, limited simulator time (limitations to simulators!) and other priorities, so variation in the quality of troops in CM is realistic.

      @@mumblerinc.6660 Well, I'm in a game right now and my T-64 has taken 10, count'em, 10 TOW shots in the face and all it's done is knock out the gun. The Dragon seems to be much more effective in Cold War.

    • @jeffjensen8
      @jeffjensen8 Před 2 lety +1

      @@jobu88Are you certain it's taking TOW hits, and not some other ATGM? I guess what I'm asking is how are certain all 10 are TOWs? In my experience, I've seen a T-72 and some T-64's in excellent hull down positions take about a dozen Shillelagh hits (check out Requin's video if you want to see that), and another took around 5-6 Dragon hits before the units ran out of ATGMs. But I've never seen something take that many TOWs and live. They usually survive if the shot is bad or hits the gun mount, but it's never been 10+ hits, or even close. I'd say the most I've seen something take is 2 or 3 TOWs. I guess it's possible that a fluke like that could happens but that's not really normal. And once the improved TOWs enter the scene, shrugging them off is much less plausible.

    In Megalon Jones Slattery's video of the same mission, the AI player of the red force pushed forward in three waves without waiting for the following-up platoons to arrive, without proper the recon and engaging from distance, which allowed blue force to destroy their T-72s in movement.
