- The Radiants performing "You Got It" (1965).
Another great classic!
THE RADIANTS: An R&B vocal group from Chicago, Illinois, USA, the Radiants were a typical transitional group of the early 60s, bringing doo-wop harmonies into the soul era with gospel-inspired vocal treatments. The group began in 1960 when Maurice McAlister (11 January 1940, Mississippi, USA) distilled a vocal group from members of the Greater Harvest Baptist Church choir. The original group besides McAlister (lead) were Wallace Sampson (baritone), Jerome Brooks (second tenor), Elzie Butler (bass) and Charles Washington, later replaced by Green "Mac" McLauren (first tenor), and their first hit (and record) for Chess Records was the Miracles-styled "Father Knows Best" (1962), but the superior b-side, "One Day I'll Show You", received much regional play. "Heartbreak Society" and "Shy Guy", both 1963, failed to generate sales outside the Chicago area, and the group reorganized as a trio - McAlister, Sampson and Leonard Caston Jnr. The trio format introduced a unique pronounced switch-off lead style, in which the vocal interplay worked as a constant flux of voices slipping in and out of the musical mix, most evident on "Voice Your Choice" (number 16 R&B), from 1964, and "It Ain't No Big Thing" (number 14 R&B), from 1965. Another reorganization took place in 1965, in which McAlister left the group, and the Radiants then had a hit with "Feel Kind Of Bad" (number 47 R&B); after yet another reorganization, they secured a hit with "Hold On" (number 35 R&B). The Radiants broke up in 1972. In 1966, meanwhile, McAlister and McLauren formed a duo, Maurice And Mac, who, recording in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, achieved several southern R&B hits, notably with "You Left The Water Running" in 1968. - Hudba
That rare combination of raw emotion and slick delivery. God I love SOUL music.

Back in the 1960's we called pants tailored like the Radiants "pegged pants".
"Baby You Got It" performed by Minnie Riperton & The Radiants; today acknowledged as The World's Greatest Background Singer, Minnie Riperton was a member of Chess Records groups The Gems, The Rotary Connection/The New Rotary Connection, this, while doing background vocals, albeit sadly uncredited, for many artists on the Chess roster, including The Radiants, Etta James ("Losers Weepers" single and album), Billy Stewart ("Strange Feeling"), Baby Washington ("Is It Worth It"), numerous tracks by Ramsey Lewis and too many more to name; Minnie's soaring, operatic, multi-octave voice was used by Chess to sweeten many a track, with an excellent example here on "Baby You Got It" Minnie Riperton lives---Mark Matlock/Andromeda International Records
On the money, while not “the greatest”,right up there at Chess.
This along with Fred Hughes is always in my set...Great Soul
Superb show, would've loved to dance at a venue to them!

+irene scarr - Try The Action's version - UK 60's Mod group.
+soulboy1965 Thanks for that. Great version. My husband and I were Mods in the 60s so love it !
+irene scarr I knew The Action's cover before hearing this out at a Soul night. Give John Lee's Groundhogs - I'll Never Fall In Love Again a go, then Bobby Freeman's original. :o)
+soulboy1965 Thanks again for these 2 tracks . Love them. Really appreciate your help. I listened to Northern soul in late 60s early 70s but then drifted away but recently started getting back into it and going to local gigs and am loving it but a lot to learn . Thanks again.
+irene scarr - Most welcome Irene. Check my channel as I have two NS playlists with some corkers :) Otis Redding - Loving By The Pound & The Astors - Twilight Zone. There's your two for today lol Have a good week. Lovely and sunny here in Mid Wales. x
Excellent ,love this version. Had only heard the version by seminal Mod favourites ,The Action, back in the day. Great.

I have to admit having listened to The Action's version since it first came out, I was not aware of this original, although I knew The Action's version must have been a cover,as at the time most of their stuff was, I never sought out the original. Thanks for posting this.
Love it great song

The little guy has a big voice!
The TV show was called "The !!!! Beat". It aired in syndication for 26 episodes in 1966. It was hosted by Nashville DJ Bill "Hoss" Allen, but was filmed at the studios of WFAA channel 8 in Dallas TX, because no Nashville stations had color capability at the time.....

Top tune :)))))
Fucking brilliant
love it!
Great song i was 15 lol.
this has got to be one of the very earliest of the "motown/northern soul" songs, with a steady driving beat, strings, harmony etc. I love how the whole group look as if the manager bought them off the peg shiny suits the day before, the 2 backing singers look about 16 & haven't quite got the moves sorted, the hesitant shielding of the eyes for "looking", the lead singer giving it his all by crunching up his neck and caressing the mic, & the rubbish backdrop! All GREAT!, though.
bubbertheusername The tall one on the right is actually an original founding member.
10/10.....5 Stars X
Great Northern Soul Floor Shaker - and excellent vid from 65'
Memo to Mum Better cut back on the spin dry ma slacks are turning into shorts !
ho yes great yes
Great!
Minnie Rperton & The Gems perform with The Radiants here on "Baby You Got It" with Minnie's sweet vocal heard clearly at :33, 1:04 and throughout the vocal backgrounds of this studio recording. Minnie was famous as a background singer for many Chess Records artists including Etta James, Bo Diddley, Ramsey Lewis, Fontella Bass, Billy Stewart and others while recording as solo as Andrea Davis, and with her groups The Gems and The Rotary Conncetion. M innie Riperton & The Radiants rock; RIP Minnie.
❤Wow thanks for teaching me something I didn't know! Hello I am Maurice's youngest daughter and I was not aware of her backing vocals on this track. Well in fair exchange how about I share some unknown Radiant facts w/you😉....Dad and the group did the backing vocals on the song Sitting in the Park and for Tony Clarke's The Entertainer. Google an awesome interview given by two members here my Dad & Wallace Samson (its WHPK Sitting In The Park Radio Show>>>look up Interviews>>>then look for August 2009 The Radiants Maurice McAlister and Wallace Sampson)
Immense.
