    One thing that I didn't realise is that you MUST have a small animal / exotics vet. I was amazed at how many local vets knew nothing about pigs, one even told me they only need nail trims every 6 months!!! Small animal vet is a definate must before even considering adoption!!
    Loved this vid, the herd did you proud with filming, as always ❤️

    • @gailterry3134
      @gailterry3134 Před 2 lety

      I totally agree! Not all towns have vets that take care of exotics. Or they know very little about them. If something major happens and your piggy gets very sick, the vet will send you to a big city 100s of miles away for care. And that care is very expensive!!! No one has any idea how much it costs to take an exotic to the vet for even the most minor of care, let alone if they need specialty care. Yet, all the pet stores sell them! So frustrating and heartbreaking to not be able to spend thousands of dollars to get good care for your piggies.

    • @lelfah
      @lelfah Před 2 lety

      @@gailterry3134 I agree x here in the UK (from my experience) a lot of vets will state that they are small animal vets, when in fact they are not trained with guinea pigs, I am so grateful to have my vet (even though costly), I would have lost one of my boars without her expertise.
      I am 100%against pet stores selling pigs too, one of the major stores here even sell large hamster wheels and claim they are fine for pigs 😢
      They are complicated and unique lil guys and people must must do proper research before adopting, which is why I'm so grateful for this channel and others. Pigs deserve just as much quality care as any other pet. ❤️ X

    I am still amazed at how far we have come in care and understanding of piggies since I had a couple when I was at school, many years past. We just saw them as cute but skittish animals but after watching this and a couple of other channels for over two years, I can appreciate them for the intelligent and fascinating creatures that I’ve fallen in love with … and even though I haven’t adopted a herd yet, I am much more prepared especially in terms of their dietary and health needs, as well as the ways in which they socialise and communicate. And they have an insanely uncanny ability to pull on our emotions. Why is that?! 🥰

    Can you please make a nail trimming video for skiddish piggies and nervous owners? Because I have this fear that I'll cut into the quick, but I saved this video because it was quite helpful

    • @candy11401
      @candy11401 Před 2 lety +2

      If your a bit nervous then you can always ask someone to hold them while you trim their nails
      The back ones are easier as they are longer but with all the nails trim the thinner parts of the nail, if the Piggies nails are white you can clearly see the pink quick
      If you do catch the quick don't worry too much, gently get a cotton pad and apply gentle pressure to the nail, its not nice to cut the quick but it's better than leaving their nails to overgrow so they are in pain while walking
      Trimming the nails should be done around once a month, sometimes sooner, sometimes a bit later but generally once a month

    I try not to open packages next to them because they start screaming in the middle of the night and I feel bad because they can't have my crackers! 😂 They know when I wake up and make sure to let me know how hungry they are! You can hear them outside of the room! Guinea pigs can bond so quickly, and if you do it right, they'll be some of the best things that have happened to you! I've only had my babies for a little over a week, and they now eat from my hand, sit on me for lap time, and greet me or talk to me in the cage! It's amazing how fast they can bond and learn your routines!!

    When I first got a guinea pig, I was actually most surprised at how much of his day was just spent eating lol. I'd seen so many videos and read things about the more fun, quirky things guinea pigs do, so was kind of expecting more excitement than what I got. I guess this was especially true in the beginning before he got more relaxed around me.
    Regarding guinea pig dominance, later on I thought introducing a neutered male to a female would be a breeze, compared to introducing boars. But it ended up being the most ferocious introduction process I ever had! It took a lot of time and persistence to get them together and have them live peacefully.

    Thanks Sarah and look forward to part two!!
    I remember when our first three piggies arrived home and a couple of days later I heard them all wheeking for the first time one morning as they heard me rustling their nugget bag! They are wonderful creatures and really smart too…
    Mine have an adjoining run which is their‘dining room/ play room’ and links onto their cage with a small wooden door out. of their cage that fastens with a hook and eye. In the morning I open the door to their run and they come into that to have their breakfast nuggets while I clean out their main cage. If I unlatch it, 3 out of the 7 of them can open the little door using their teeth to pull the eye bit of the fastening open to let themselves back into their cage after they’ve had their breakfast!! It’s so sweet to see-those who can’t figure out how to do it, wait for one who can to let them back in again! I like the way Phoebe leads your gang and Pedro- ever the perfect gentleman is her deputy leader of course!!
    Enjoy the rest of your wheekend! xx

    Hi Sarah !! Thanks again for a great video always learn so much from you. My two Peruvian girls Gracie and Aspen are doing well I do have a new larger home for them and well...as life and luck would have it...yes we will have an new addition to the herd soon. From the same feed store I purchased the girls from. A boar who I have made an appointment with our veterinarian who takes care of exotic animals....and my amazon Parrot..... to have him neutered and I am hoping when he is ready in a couple months to be in with the girls. He has been at the feed store alone for a few weeks now and I know he is lonesome and needs a home. I'm excited and I hope after his recovery from surgery they will all get along and possibly help the girls with their shyness. We do a lot of lap and floor time but, as I have learned females are much more shy. I will keep you posted on our progress and thanks again for sharing all your knowledge with us. I really love seeing your herd and learning from you! Cheers!!! xxxooo

      Hay should be most of their diet so try different sorts, timothy hay is usually a favorite! Carrots aren't great for them as they are high in sugars so no worries if he/ she isn't keen on these!

    One thing that I have learned since getting my girls (I got them from a pet shop) is that it is FAR better to visit your local rescue center or animal shelter. Definitely will not be going to a pet store again if I have more guinea pigs in the future.

    Would it be okay to do a trimming video? I’m a new piggy owner and she hates being picked up, so I have yet learned how to cut her nails by myself.

      Same one of my boys are so squiggly that I have to take him to an exotic vet to get his nails cut. We are actually going soon to get his nails cut and to cut that goo (that boars spray on each other) because I can’t cut it myself

    The cage I am looking at buying doesnt have a floor and I was wondering if I could just put a piece of cardboard there?

    • @SqueakDreams
      @SqueakDreams  Před 2 lety

      As a temporary solution maybe but it will quickly get dirty and isn't fully waterproof so pee may get on the floor. You could look at getting a waterproof liner or material with fleece on top - some people do this and just make sure that it's bigger than the cage so protects around the edges properly :)

    So crazy how you said people confuse guinea pigs with hamster . I know someone who did that. They said it’s a hámster snd I was like no it’s not it’s a piggy, they said the store told them it was a 🐹 hamster 😦 wth !

    I had guinea pig as found out she was pregnant so we gave the male to a friend guinea pig since she had only a single pig. So we had mom and daughter. My parents didn't do their research in the 90s had them outside in Australia heat. Surprised they lived as long as they did. Sadly a friend dog tore the cage open and shocked them to death. 🤣 your such a dorky piggy parent knowing all the breeds.

    My pet peeve is when people get mad when I say I have one guinea pig. I was wanting two guinea pigs hubby said only one. So when went to the store. There only one adult in one cage and the other cage had two young ones. So I decided to take solo adult male home. Named him Bacon. I am hoping when done saving for the 4x2 cc cage. Hopefully if play my cards right by Christmas Bacon have a partner in crime 🤣. If not Hopefully someone give me a gift card so get one lol.

    We have a one year old neutered male and two 12 week old girls. We would love to introduce them to each other instead of them seeing each other through bars. Do you think it would be safe for our little girls or should we wait until they're a bit older before they share a home together. Thanks
